s As with all our terms, this is another very busy one. This term is only nine weeks and we need to fit in a lot of learning. A very successful School Development Day was held on Monday with all school staff completing Emergency Care training and participating in building capacity to manage events here at school as well as meeting with colleagues to plan for the term. Thank you to all staff who participated so enthusiastically in all the sessions.

This edition of the newsletter recognises all those students who received awards at our End of Term Assembly. It was fantastic to see so many parents, carers and family members attend the assembly to support our students. A highlight would have to have been the drawing of our Easter Raffle. Thank you to Mr Currie for organising the wonderful Easter egg prizes with his mother who made a very generous donation of them to our school. (Mr Currie’s mum works in a chocolate shop!!!!) . Students sold a huge number of tickets with the winners being Penny Cochrane, Ms Blunt (who generously donated her prize for a redraw) - won by Jada Shillingsworth and Ms Thompson who shared all her eggs with her secondary students. Congratulations to everyone for a great term 1.

We also acknowledged the students who participated in the School Cross Country Carnival. Primary students will progress to the Barwon Cross Country to be held here in Goodooga on 23

rd May. If you are able to assist on the day your help would be appreciated. Please

contact Mr Currie.

Launch of the Gamilaraay / Yuwaalaraay Language Nest. This was held in Lightning Ridge on Friday May 2

nd. Mrs Rasmussen’s class attended the

Opening to present a prayer in language. Presentations of student work and learning in language were also on display. The Launch was attended by the Honourable Victor Dominello MP, Minister for Citizenship and Communities and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. Ms Gibbs also participated in a three day Board of Studies workshop at the end of last term in preparation for further delivery of learning in language and culture in association with the Language and Culture Nest.

NAPLAN Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will have completed their NAPLAN assessments by the next newsletter. NAPLAN is an assessment completed by all students in those years across Australia. The results are an indication of what each student can do and are used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating your child’s level of achievement. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

COMING UP ………… Next week is extremely busy. A group of senior students from Dubbo and other schools will be visiting on a cultural experience tour. They will join with our senior students on Tuesday afternoon for some sport activities. Primary students will be travelling to Bourke for the Outback Rugby League Challenge. Those students participating must have returned their permission note and payment. There may be some spare seats if parents wish to attend - please contact Ms Nott asap. Cost for this excursion is $10.00 each and the bus leaves at 6.30am sharp.

Primary students will be completing craft activities on Thursday for the lovely ladies in their

life in recognition of Mother’s Day - mum, nan, auntie, sister. Class teachers have planned

some exciting activities for this session. Keep an eye out for more information next week.

A Happy Mother’s Day to all the significant ladies in our lives.

Next Friday 9th May we will hold our school Athletics Championships at Magpie Park. All

community members are welcome to attend and support the students in the events. A canteen will be in operation on the day.

Returning this Monday at 10.00am will be playgroup. All parents & carers with little ones under five are welcome to attend to develop socialisation and physical skills. Later in the term Mindy will be holding a workshop to support parenting skills and participation in learning.

Finally, a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers ( Marie, Patsy & their helpers) who keep our school canteen operating. They do a great job. Our canteen sells lovely fresh food at very reasonable prices. Remember you can place money with the canteen and your children can order using that money. Marie will let you know when it is used and you can put more into credit. This is a great way to keep track of what you are spending.

Please contact the school if you have any concerns. Enjoy the next fortnight. Kath

Stage 1 students this week were learning about the meaning of ANZAC. Both Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students made a wreath for the ANZAC day service during Art.

In Art, they will be creating cultural artwork from around the world and linking this back to Australian art forms. The students will have opportunities to discuss what the artwork means from the artist and audience’s point of views.

The topics the students will be learning about this term are ‘Push-pull’ in Science, ‘Wet/Dry Environments’ and ‘The Way We Were’ in HSIE and they will continue on learning the ‘Hoedown/Throwdown’ dance with Year 3 and 4. In R2L they will be learning about Poetry, Narrative and Procedure.

This week in Poetry they have learnt about rhyming and alliteration. Two poems the students wrote as a class are:

Georgia celebrated her birthday this week and enjoyed her carriage birthday cake.

Priscilla, Leslie, Ursula & Kuyan all did a great job making minestrone. There were a few noses scrunched up as they saw some of the fresh vegies going in and it was a definite YUK! to the red kidney beans. However it was a thumbs up from all who sampled. GREAT WORK students. Mrs Gibbs

Goodooga Central School Cross Country took place on the last Thursday of Term 1. This year the track had been changed to surprise and challenge the students further and it was so pleasing to see their efforts. A Reminder: All students are required to wear a hat at school. All students have received hats at school and are encouraged to leave at least one of these hats at school for school use. If students are not wearing a hat they are expected to stay in the undercover sheltered areas in the playground.

Now that the hot hot weather is here we are encouraging students to drink lots of water at school. Packing sandwiches and fruit for their lunch and recess is highly encouraged to provide students with healthy energy for tackling daily school work.
