Term 2, Week 4 Wednesday 24 May 2017 Kia ora whanau Safe travel to and from school as a follow up to the FlexiBuzz message sent to families this morning: The news from Queenspark school last week that three children were approached by a man in a van was a shock to the local schools and community. In response we placed additional staff at strategic locations after school last week and before and after school to start this week. The update from the alert this morning and last week is that the police are investigating and in the meantime they encourage schools and families to reinforce the safety message. We would like to remind you: Children should not be at school before 8:30am unless they are in OSCAR as they are unsupervised and to be fair it is freezing outside at this time of year and studios do not open until 8:30am Please remind your child of the importance of travelling directly to and from school on agreed routes if they walk, cycle, scooter or come on some other wheels Again remind your child about what to do if someone they do not know approaches them. Do not go toward someone in a car calling you, do not get into a car, yell and run away Have an agreed code word in case your child is told "Mum has sent me to pick you up" or words to that affect If possible locate some places along the way that your child could stop into if they are concerned travelling to or from school on any given day Use safe crossing locations, at the lights, at the crossing and on corners where your child can see clearly each way Keep a balance when talking to your child/ren so they have plan and dont just worry It is an opportune time to reinforce our safety messages and road rules. On a positive note it is pleasing to see less and less parents are parking on yellow lines and more are using the pedestrian crossing. Term 2, Week 4 – Wednesday 24 May 2017 Kia ora whanau

Safe travel to and from school as a follow up to the FlexiBuzz message sent to families this morning: The news from Queenspark school last week that three children were approached by a man in a van was a shock to the local schools and community. In response we placed additional staff at strategic locations after school last week and before and after school to start this week. The update from the alert this morning and last week is that the police are investigating and in the meantime they encourage schools and families to reinforce the safety message.

We would like to remind you:

Children should not be at school before 8:30am unless they are in OSCAR as they are unsupervised and to be fair it is freezing outside at this time of year and studios do not open until 8:30am

Please remind your child of the importance of travelling directly to and from school on agreed routes if they walk, cycle, scooter or come on some other wheels

Again remind your child about what to do if someone they do not know approaches them. Do not go toward someone in a car calling you, do not get into a car, yell and run away

Have an agreed code word in case your child is told "Mum has sent me to pick you up" or words to that affect

If possible locate some places along the way that your child could stop into if they are concerned travelling to or from school on any given day

Use safe crossing locations, at the lights, at the crossing and on corners where your child can see clearly each way

Keep a balance when talking to your child/ren so they have plan and don’t just worry

It is an opportune time to reinforce our safety messages and road rules. On a positive note it is pleasing to see less and less parents are parking on yellow lines and more are using the pedestrian crossing. When we work together to reinforce safety measures your child will be safer! Take care

PTA Bark Mountain for School Landscaping…. Is finally taking shape! We still have 2-3 trailer loads left though and it would be a great service to the school if we can get this. Sunday afternoon, May 28 is our final push for this. We need: a) a couple of people with shovels (so you can help even if you don’t have a trailer) at approx 3pm in the City Mall (Cashel Street – opposite the BNZ Centre) to shovel the bark into easy to manage piles for us to then load on to trailers. (if Sunday afternoon does not suit you could do this any time during the week or weekend) b) someone with a trailer for 3.30 please - bring a shovel and a rake c) and another trailer for 4pm – bring a shovel and a rake d) another helper at school to help with the unload – with a shovel or pronged rake Please get in touch with Amy on 0277506640 or [email protected] if you can help. Plus, A HUGE THANK YOU to those who helped out last Saturday. A big thank you to Kim Hillson, Vicki Smith and Caroline Milne from the staff, plus parents – Paul Willetts and Jason Cowan, and the biggest shout out goes to Grant Stewart, without whom this operation would not have been able to go ahead. Also, a huge thank you to Johnston’s Hire Centre on Parkhouse Road for the use of the digger.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Dear Parents/Caregivers, To you all we extend a warm invitation to our Open Night at Chisnallwood Intermediate School on Wednesday July 5 from 6-8pm. With more than 500 students, at only two year levels, a special dynamic is created. This dynamic can only exist at a stand-alone Intermediate. It drives the curricular and extracurricular experience for all students and creates opportunity for the highest levels of excellence and creativity. I have been alerted to the fact that rumours have been circulating around Chisnallwood's future. To clarify, we have a 2020 review date with the MoE which we strongly believe will evidence that we are more than suitable for continuance as a fully functioning intermediate due to our long and proud history of sterling education service. It is dependent on local families continuing to support us with their patronage and that continues to be the case. Our 50th Jubilee is on October 27/28 and we expect to be celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2067. Please join us for our open evening and experience our dynamic for yourself. Prospectus’ available now. Kind regards, Justin Fields Principal

Good news! It’s not too late to join Marrzipan! Marrzipan is a revolutionary self-confidence programme aimed at bringing out the absolute best in students. We are looking for some awesome students to fill some parts in our play, which we will perform for parents and their peers at the end of term. Come along to a no-obligation Trial Lesson and see whether you like it! You can sign up for one directly via our website www.marrzipan.com (we have contact numbers on there too, should you prefer to talk to a human!)
