In the New Zealand Curriculum, the arts learning area is comprised of four disciplines: dance, drama, music and the visual arts. At Kilbirnie School we believe all of these aspects of the arts are important in a rich, engaging education. We believe all our students should have the opportunity to participate, experience and enjoy the arts. We want students to be creative in their own art and appreciative of art made by others. The skills and competencies students learn when participating in the arts are very consistent with the skills we describe in the school Graduate Profile. This is displayed around the school and on our website. Through the arts students learn to participate, take risks, create, innovate, develop confidence, express ideas, respect the efforts of others, enjoy learning and have fun! Our work in the arts is also connected to learning about the environment and celebrating the diversity of people. Last term all students were involved in preparing a contribution that will feature in a published book of Kilbirnie School students writing and art. We are very excited about this publication, a first for our school. This initiative is part of our bi-annual celebration of the visual arts and fund-raising event- Art te aroha. This involves every child and is an enormously exciting event for Kilbirnie School. Please do mark the dates in your diary. See the poster below. Tony Austin- Principal.

PRINCIPAL NEWS.

• KILBIRNIE SCHOOL CARE VALUES PROGRAMME. A message from Jacqui Brown.

Last term our value was ACHIEVEMENT and it was overwhelming the number of children who brought along ribbons, certificates and trophies, or spoke about the wonderful achievements they had recently achieved. Their achievements included:- Being player of the day in their chosen sport – rugby, gymnastics, swimming etc Success in the Weetbix triathlon Gaining one of the top positions in running races Riding a bike for the first time Raising money for charities. The list is endless. This picture shows the outstanding number of children who successfully achieved great success in one way or another. We are so proud of our tamariki! This term our value is RESPECT and we are sure that parents and teachers both have high expectations, when it comes to our children displaying respectful behaviour. We will certainly be encouraging this at school and sharing different situations where respect is demonstrated and acknowledged. The C.A.R.E. notice board will reflect how we are implementing this value at school and we would appreciate it, if you as parents/caregivers, could reinforce and remind children about the importance of showing respect in many different life experiences. The children are already showing respect amongst their peers, opening doors for people, being kind and considerate and even remembering their lovely manners when going to the office to ask Liz for something. Below, we would like to show you how room 6 class (from a previous year) formed the word using their bodies. Also on the table outside the office are several books that classes have made to show how they incorporated RESPECT into their classroom programme.

• DIORAMAS! Last term we made dioramas. We had to research an animal we liked and found out information. We made a short interview video with a slide show showing our creations and showed it at assembly this week. “We had to make the animal out of white clay. We left them to dry and made their habitats out of a shoe box. For the shoe box we had to make the setting, so the animal looked right. For example, my animal lives in the Antarctic, so I included icebergs and snow. I used cotton and egg cartons to make them look realistic” - Vic, Room 5 “My animal lives in the jungle, so I made vines from wool and cardboard” - Chloe Room 5 “We made our items from things we could recycle: such as cups, wool, egg cartons and cardboard. We painted our habitats to make them realistic. We asked questions on what problems we had and how we fixed them. For example, my head fell of my animal, so I needed to hot glue gun it back on” - Max Room 6.

• ASSEMBLY/ HUI THIS WEEK. Our school assemblies or hui are usually held on every second Tuesday in the hall starting at 2.15pm. Assemblies are generally on the even weeks of term and feature items by classes and individuals and the presentation of certificates for different achievements. The next hui is planned for week 4, Tuesday August 13. I would like to remind all parents and whanau that everyone is welcome to attend, there are benches organised at the back of the hall ready for you. This includes those that aren’t able to be there for the 2.15pm start. I notice some adults and pre-school children waiting outside the hall just after 2.30pm during assemblies presumably early for pick up. Please come in and join us! Items this week included Rose speaking about her fundraising for the SPCA in relation to our school values and Ruaridh and Astrid demonstrating terrific talent on the piano.
