Messages from the Principal

COVID Update

Thank you to all our community for adjusting to the most recent changes related to the NSW Department

of Education’s COVID advice and guidelines.

Students & staff who are absent or sent home due to flu like symptoms need to be tested for COVID-19.

Students & Staff must not return to school until they return a negative COVID-19 result and are symp-

tom free.

Schools must sight the negative COVID test result.

Regular updates will be provided via our weekly newsletter and School Bytes if there are any changes at a

school level based on the advice or guidelines provided by the NSW Department of Education. We encour-

age all families to send their children to school unless they are unwell. When sending in an absence note

please be specific with the condition e.g. My child sustained an injury or My child had a cold rather than

My child was sick or unwell.

Students with flu like symptoms should get tested for COVID and provide the school with a copy of the

negative test result before returning. Please forward absence notes and test results to the school email

[email protected]

We thank everyone for supporting the community by following these guidelines.

Road Safety

We thank the vast majority of parents for acknowledging the rules associated with the collection of our

children each afternoon. Unfortunately, some drivers are electing to park in the no stopping areas and

some drivers are doing “U-turns” at the drop off/pickup area or in Evelyn Cres. We are attempting to keep

the flow of cars moving. Unfortunately the morning is a very busy time of day with parents dropping stu-

dents off at schools and many others heading off to work but those who do not follow the law put stu-

dents’ lives at risk. There is little tolerance for those who disregard rules when it comes to student safety.

For the sake of student safety, do not disregard road rules. Thanks to the 99.9% of parents who do the

right thing! To the 0.1% of drivers not following the rules, please consider the penalties that come with

breaking the road rules.

Our School Support Staff

This week we are celebrating School Administrative Support Staff Recognition week.

It is a time to reflect on their significant work, amazing work ethic and goodwill. Our SASS team are a tre-

mendous group and they certainly play an important role in helping our school operate each and every day.

Rikke Hansen – our hardworking, friendly and incredibly helpful Administrative Manager. Rikke looks after

asset management, health and safety, the school budget, technology and purchasing. These are very signifi-

cant and large portfolios and Rikke does an amazing job with each of these. Her resourcefulness and fault-

less commitment to helping others provides invaluable support and leadership to our school office and its

people. We could never thank you enough for all that you do!

We thank our school cheerful office team of Jane Gregory, Lisa Fieramosca, Richard Hollinworth & Marg Gib-

son they answer phones, welcome new people to our school, prepare our newsletter, look after children

who are sick or hurt themselves, look after printing and photocopying, check emails, buy equipment for the

school, field counter enquiries, and work in the school library – and this is just a portion of what they do. We

are extremely fortunate to have such a friendly, capable team to help us.

We thank our school learning support officers (SLSOs) Mrs Glendining, Mrs White, Mrs Gibson and Mrs

Mitchell – our SLSOs work in classrooms helping teachers and students with their learning. Sometimes they

may help an individual student complete their work, sometimes they run special programs such as in Minilit,

sometimes they help children be safe and happy in our playground and sometimes they busily prepare re-

sources and activities. Our support officers are very important people in our school, and we take this oppor-

tunity to thank them for all they do for us.

There are so many great things about Wideview Public School. We are so lucky to have such a magnificent

team of support staff at our school. It is a privilege to be working with each and every one of them, and I’m

so delighted that our students, teachers and parents have such brilliant people and committed members of

our team, helping us every day.

Resilience

As adults we have the advantage of life experience to help us develop skills to be resilient and tenacious but

in certain situations we still find the challenge of overcoming difficulties a struggle. This year in particular has

tested everyone’s resilience as we try to make sense of this Pandemic and its impact on our lives. Children

can also experience difficulties when faced with challenges which may appear difficult to master. Teachers

have the abilities and experience to encourage children to ‘have a go’ with the tasks they complete at

school. Teachers also emphasise that making a mistake is okay.

We want children to know that from time-to-time they won’t be able to achieve a task or activity and that is

also okay.

We want children to know that to achieve mastery they will often need to practise many times until they

grasp a new concept. We want children to know that ‘If at first they don’t succeed, they should try, try

again’. The development of resilience and fortitude is a life-long learning process and as parents and teach-

ers, it is our job to teach the children in our care the importance of giving things a go and never giving up

and to not be disheartened if you don’t quite get there.

Regards,

Mr McTernan

On Thursday at lunch time, Wideview’s beloved Wilson came along to the Waste Warriors meeting to find out what the group was all about.

Wilson: So I haven’t met you all before. Who are you, and what is your mission?

WW: We are the Waste Warrior representatives from years 2-6. Our mission is to reduce wasteat Wideview, and in our local community in order to create a cleaner, safer environment.

Wilson: Why do you think it is important to reduce waste?

WW: We have learned that more than 8 million tonnes of plastics enters our oceans every year.

Most of this plastic is single use plastic and has a devastating impact on animals. We want to keep the world’s animals safe and happy and help to clean up the environment for everyone.

Wilson: What are the Waste Warriors doing at Wideview and how is it going?

WW: We have started a “Trash Free Tuesday”. This is a day every week where students bring zero waste to school. That means, no cling wrap, packaged food and poppers. Instead, students are encouraged to bring fresh food like sandwiches, fruit, dip, crackers, vegies etc. in reusable containers, beeswax wraps or in their own skin!

The great news is that many students are being rewarded for their “trash free” lunches on Tuesdays with Greenies that they can use in their Bluey’s books.

Wilson: What else are the Waste Warriors doing?

WW: We are looking to bring back our battery recycling program and are starting a new plastic bread tag recycling program. We also hope to have our composting system up and running again soon.

Wilson: How can students and parents of Wideview be “Waste Warriors” too?

WW Misato: You can reduce waste at home too. Also use keep cups. WW Matilda: Buy less single-use plastic at the supermarket. WW Andy: Share ideas about reducing waste with friends, family and other schools. WW Madi: Use more reusable plastic containers e.g. byo cups/containers/keep cups. WW: You could also read, watch, learn and talk about issues related to sustainability and reducing our global footprint. The more we know, the more we can help!

Wilson: Wow, it sounds like the Waste Warriors are busy. Keep up the great work Waste Warriors!

Watched Big Little Lies? Wondered what it’s like in real life? Now’s

your chance. We promise, we aren’t filled with cliquey Mum’s who

argue all the time.

Seriously though, it’s definitely not like the stereotypes. At WPS the

P&C is filled with Mums and Dads just like you, who just want to make a difference at their kids’ school. We

have parents and carers from all backgrounds, ages and stages, Mums and Dads, including a mix of working

and non-working parents. There’s no arguing or shouting or drama, we promise!

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on October 17th at 7pm, most likely via zoom. Each of the P&C

Subcommittees will hold theirs’ prior to this date, once they are locked in, we will share the dates with

you.

AGM

What’s an AGM? It sounds really scary and boring!

Nah, it’s not that bad. Under our Constitution we are required to hold an AGM. It’s basically a wrap up of

the previous year and where we open up all of the positions for nomination.

We try and get it out of the way pretty quick so that we can get things moving and on to the rest of the

meeting.

Does that mean if I come, I’ll end up voted as President?

Not unless you nominate yourself and are elected! Only members from the previous year are able to nomi-

nate and vote in the AGM elections.

We also don’t expect members in their first year of membership to hold Executive or other roles - unless

they really want to, of course! I did end up as President after just one meeting.

There are roles of all sizes, some big and some much smaller both in terms of times and contribution.

You won’t end up “volunteered” for anything you don’t want - so come along and relax!

What positions will be open for nomination?

All roles will be open, previous incumbents may nominate again.

*Executive Roles*

President

2 x Vice President

Treasurer

Secretary

Wow, you’ve made it sound great! How can I get more information?

Flick us an email or ask us a question on Facebook and we’ll get back to you. Alternatively, organise a

coffee with one of us (Kath Edgar, Filip Cloetens, Ali Glendining or Edwin Tomlins) to find out the nitty gritty

of what’s involved. Otherwise just come along to the September meeting (20th Sept 7pm) and ask away.

We can’t wait to meet you! It would be great for anyone thinking about joining to come to the September

meeting, so you get to know a bit about how things work.

Over the next few weeks in the newsletter we will highlight some of the roles and responsibilities.
