Messages from the Principal

New impact of COVID

It is now a requirement of all schools to sight a negative COVID test result before a student can return to

school if sick with flu like symptoms. If a child is sent home from school due to flu like symptoms or exhibits

these in the home it is necessary to undergo a COVID test, self isolate and submit a copy of a negative re-

sult. At present there appears to be many experts with their views on what constitutes a symptom but the

Australian Health Protection Principal Committee continues to use the WHO guidelines. A link to the

AHPPC list of symptoms is attached (COVID SYMPTOMS LIST). If a result is not provided the child is unable

to return to school until one is produced. We apologise for the added stress this may cause but the safety

of all children in the school environment is our number one priority.

Due to the new guidelines the Cares and Swimming Programs are cancelled as are all Band, Recorder,

Choir, Drama and Debating extra curricular activities. Flip dance is continuing as it is a part of the main-

stream school curriculum as is the school dance ensemble.

Absences

A reminder, if parents keep their children at home without a medical reason, students will be marked as

taking unjustified leave as per Departmental policy. We encourage students to continue to come to school

unless they are unwell at home because they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable

to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition (or in limited cases where a family member has an

ongoing medical condition) or need to self isolate for one of the reasons provided by NSW Health. When

sending in a absence note please be specific with the condition e.g. My child sustained an injury or My

child had a cold rather than My child was sick or unwell.

I would like stress how appreciative we are to members of our school community who have taken great

precautions, beyond what is prescribed, to ensure the safety of all in our school community. Your support

and actions have been greatly appreciated.

Enrolled for Kindergarten 2021 Yet?

We are currently taking in-area enrolments for Kindergarten 2021. If you are yet to enrol your child for

school, we encourage you to do so as we are currently considering plans for how Kinderlinks can work this

year. At the moment we are following the NSW Department of Education guidelines around safe protocols

in schools; so the plans around the program will need to be flexible this year.

Communication

As a school, we take great pride in our communication levels with our community. We have an excellent

Webpage, an informative newsletter and frequently reach out to parents via email, schoolbytes or by phone

when necessary. Class Apps are effectively used in some classrooms but not all. It is vitally important that

the communication channel between each classroom teacher and each child’s family is kept open.

Sometimes families have a need to reach out to their child’s teacher to discuss issues or clarify something

around academic matters or even well-being issues. We openly encourage this type of interaction. If you are

needing to contact your child’s teacher please make contact via the front office to ensure that the messages

get through.

Please be advised that sometimes same day communication or responses from individual classroom teach-

ers is not possible for a wide range of reasons. Additionally, some issues need further investigation and it

may take a day or two for the teacher to respond depending on the seriousness of the issue. We thank you

for your co-operation and continued support.

More on Resilience

Children the world over thrive on predictable routine and stable boundaries and Wideview is no different.

However, as we know, the pandemic has done its best to throw routines and predictability into chaos, and

this can impact the emotional and mental wellbeing of children and adults in many ways. Yet, as adults, we

have a crucial role to play in helping our students meet the challenges of this COVID world we are striving to

keep to the daily routines and rituals of school (as much as possible within the current DoE guidelines for

school operations) so that our students know what to expect each and every day. In PE/Health and PD les-

sons, our teachers are proactively teaching their students healthy coping strategies, resilience and self-

regulation skills. And this is where you, the parents and carers, can assist in the process. As much as we

want to step in and protect our children from the woes of the world, we do them a disservice if we shield

them from everything. By limiting the opportunity that children have to respond to difficulties and day to

day challenges, we limit their development of resilience. As Jenny Rankin writes in an article attached below,

When kids are micro-managed by their parents, the kids don’t develop the self-control skills that are neces-

sary for achieving long-term goals. Steve Francis an Australian parenting expert adds, If you never trip over

untied laces, you fail to see the importance of tying them. These sorts of lessons – painful, uncomfortable,

necessary – help children make better choices. Nothing modifies a child’s behaviour more efficiently than

natural consequences. It is important that children are allowed to make mistakes and to learn from them.

Obviously, this is better when the price for the mistake is relatively small. Because parents intervene prema-

turely, children often miss the unpleasantness of their actions.

Author Jenny Rankin also notes in this article, kids who receive the best of everything and don’t have oppor-

tunities to practice defeat will later struggle when coping with life’s messy nature.

The current drop off at the gates in the morning is proving tremendously successful in building independ-

ence and resilience in our students, particularly those who previously may have been somewhat anxious

about separating from either mum or dad. Our teachers report a noticeable positive change in such stu-

dents.

Road Safety

A NEAR MISS IN LONSDALE. Last week on the back crossing some of our children were almost fatalities

except for the quick thinking of one of our parents. If you are using the back crossing please escort your

child across the road as not all road users are vigilant at the crossing. If you are unable to escort your child

across consider sending them the long way to the front gate.

We are getting closer to a Kiss and Drop zone in the front of our school. The final community consultation

phase has been completed and shortly we will see the new signage at the front of the school. We were un-

successful in having the no stopping area on the bend preceding the school drive changed which will have

some impact on our current practices but if we all follow the procedures when implemented the drop off

and pick up of children should run smoothly. This newsletter contains Hornsby Council’s latest school zone

road safety newsletter along with two of their educational resources about school zone parking and road

rules. Please take the time to have a quick look at these.

We ask parents to model safe practices at drop off and pick up times. There are many young eyes watching

and learning from you at these times.

P&C Update

Next P&C Meeting – Monday 21st Sept 7pm via zoom!

P&C Meeting Monday

We had our August meeting on Monday night via zoom. Thanks to all who attended. Plenty of items were

on the agenda and discussed including the new department rules around COVID, security at the school in

particular on the weekend, we learnt that local kids are coming in on the weekends and using the brand

new shade sail outside WOOSHC as a trampoline! We’re looking into security and other methods to stop

this from happening or possible weekend security cameras so we can identify and go to the police when

this happens. We talked about the upcoming AGMs and that most of our committees (WOOSHC, Uniform,

Band and Canteen) have at least 1 member if not more moving on and that we will need to get some vol-

unteers. Over the coming weeks I will highlight each area and advise when the subcommittee AGM will be

held. Some of these volunteer roles are reasonably low demand in terms of time, it would be great to get

some new faces into roles. Without our volunteers we cannot run these services. Please contact me if you

may be interested in volunteering on a subcommittee.

P&C AGM

The P&C Annual General meeting will be held on October 19th. More information to follow in next week’s

newsletter. Please mark the date in your diary.

2021 Fete

We’re seeking people interested in getting together to start discussing the 2021 fete. Obviously at this

stage we have no idea what this might look like but need to start getting a committee together to discuss

options and do some initial planning. Please send us a message via Facebook or email us if you’re interest-

ed.

Bottle Filling Stations Update

The P&C Executive have been working with the SRC and Mrs Pardo to run a competition for the artwork

which will go on a bottle filling station close to the playground equipment. We have been overwhelmed by

the talent in the school, some of the artworks are simply amazing. We have chosen the winning artworks

and are working to mock them up for the station and will announce the winners to the kids in due course.

You can stop in a NO PARKING zone for a max. of two minutes to drop off and pick up passengers.If no spaces are available you cannot queue on the road way or in any other zones while waiting for a space. Model safe and considerate behaviour for your child - they will learn from you!

How school parents & carers can help their community

In response to Covid-19, requests from State Government have created an expectation that parents/carers should drive each child directly to and from the school gate. This is unfortunately creating increased congestion issues within the school zones.

SCHOOL

With the congestion issues, comes complaints from the surrounding residents and community.

Below are some ideas that schools could suggest to their parents and students that may assist in alleviating some of these traffic issues:

Walk or cycle to school together while observing social distancing.

Park and walk - suggest that parents and carers park (legally) several blocks from the school zone and either walk to meet their child or ask their child to walk to them to be picked up.

A few school crossing tips from Stephen Miller the School Crossing Supervisor at Lane Cove Public.

Always… approach the pedestrian crossing slowly.Never… run onto, or across the crossing, even if the school crossing supervisor is in the middle of the road.

Always… watch for the School Crossing Supervisor’s signal.Never… cross unless the supervisor has indicated to you that it’s safe to do so.

Always… pay attention to the traffic as you cross. Sometimes vehicles may not stop or even suddenly begin to move again.Never… look down at your phone as you cross.

Always… get off your bike or scooter and push these across the crossing.Never… bounce balls or play with anything else you could drop.

Always... wait for your parents to arrive at the crossing if you’ve run on ahead, and then cross altogether.Never… assume traffic will stop for you, just because you are standing at a pedestrian crossing. Sometimes they just don’t.

Always… thank your School Crossing Supervisor – it is a very demanding job keeping everybody safe while also managing busy traffic flow.

Stephen cares very much about all the children he helps to keeps safe. You can really help him by remembering all these simple do’s and don’ts.

The current COVID-19 situation has seen an increase in the number of parents and carers choosing to drive their children to and from school, placing enormous pressure on the local traffic environment.Many school communities are experiencing increased traffic congestion due to inappropriate use of school Drop-off and Pick-up zones, particularly with vehicles stopping for too long.

How can you help to keep our children safe?

Check out this list of safety tips for drivers using a school Drop-off and Pick-up zone.

• Always drop off or pick up your child from the designated zone and follow the school’s procedures.

• Drivers should remain in their vehicles at all times in the Drop-off and Pick-up zone. • Drivers may stop for a maximum of 2 minutes in the Drop-off and Pick-up zone.• Ensure children use the Safety Door (the rear footpath side door) to get in and out

of the car. • Ensure the handbrake is applied when the vehicle is stationery. • Always park legally. • Avoid dangerous manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns.
