Having a child diagnosed with dyslexia can be a traumatic experience.
While dyslexia can make reading more difficult, with the right instruction,
almost all individuals with dyslexia can learn to read. Many people with
dyslexia have gone on to accomplish great things. Among the many dys-
lexia success stories are Thomas Edison, Stephen Spielberg, F. Scott Fitz-

NSW Parliament House School Leaders Visit
Last Term, all of the school leaders in Matt Kean’s state electorate of Hornsby were invited, with their par-
ents and teachers, to a morning tea at State Parliament House. Our leaders Tom, Zoe, Mitch and Skye had
the opportunity to mingle with their peers from other schools and visit the upper and lower houses as par-
liament was sitting.
The premier, Gladys Berejiklian, also came and spoke with the students about the importance of a quality
education and working hard to become effective leaders as did our local member Matt Kean.
The highlight for many students were the speeches from the three elite athletes from Manly, The Matildas
and the Sydney Swifts who both motivated and inspired the leadership group about their experiences at
school and developing leadership skills as elite sports people and the importance of pursuing education
during and after their sporting careers.
Our leadership group are to be commended on their manners and behaviour as they were a credit to our
school.
Thank you to the parents who escorted their children to the venue and made the event possible.
Congratulations captains! Well done!
Ian Thomas

2C Maths How big is our Library?
The students from 2C used their new knowledge about perimeter and area to measure our school library
during the last week of Term 3. Armed with 1 metre and 30 centimetre rulers the children worked in
groups of 2 and 3 to take accurate measurements. They worked well together solving problems such as
how to measure around furniture. By the end of the lesson they calculated the library perimeter to be 63
metres and the area to be 220 square metres.
Stage 2 Science Day – The Great Lego Escape At the end of Term 3, Stage 2 had a science day. The day was based on what we had learned during Term
3 in science, such as the forces of movement, gravity and friction. We completed 6 challenges throughout
the day. Some of the activities were catapulting our Lego man across the river, making our Lego man
climb up a wall using only strings and straws. We made parachutes to get our Lego man to the drop zone
and made paper planes to help our Lego man escape. We had great fun with the activities.
Tony – 4LM
The Stage 2 teachers would like to thank our wonderful parent helpers, Kath Edgar, Jen Tanner, Jackie
Blair, Kylie Nawotka, Kate Friend, Kristin Braendle and Michelle
Stephens. The day could not have been possible without your help.

Volunteering in Schools Every school relies on the input of parents & the community at large. At Wideview, we greatly appreciate the importance of all the things that volunteers do. Whether helping in the classroom or with a P&C activi-ty. Ultimately, it is all about the children.
The Department sets out guidelines for all of us to follow to ensure our students - your kids, are safe. The Working With Children Checking process for schools changed some time ago, which has necessitated in some follow up & duplication of older paperwork. We appreciate that this can cause some frustration. No-one likes paperwork but it is essential for student safety & wellbeing.
To make this process as painless as possible we would ask that any parent who has not already completed paperwork recently, that thinks they may wish to volunteer in some aspect, at some time, complete a Dec-laration & provide 100 points of ID at anytime soon. Once done, this should not need to be repeated and will save some last minute rushing around when it is needed suddenly.
Attached to the back of this newsletter are the documents for you to download & print. Or come to the office & ask for a copy.
One exception would be as a volunteer driver, in which case, additionally we would need the current regis-tration of the car being driven & your currentdrivers license.
Wideview Dance Workshops
In Term 4, we will be offering 8 weeks of Dance Skills Workshops to all students in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5.
These classes will allow inexperienced dancers to begin to develop dance skills, and will also allow those
students who were involved in our 2018 dance groups to further develop their dance skills.
Workshop lessons will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
The Tuesday lessons will be for current Year 4 and 5 girls and boys.
The Wednesday lessons will be for current Year 2 and 3 girls and boys.
Classes for all groups will begin in Week 3 of Term 4, starting on Tuesday 30 October (Years 4 and 5) and
Wednesday 31 October (Years 2 and 3). The workshops will run for 8 weeks, ending on Tuesday 4 Decem-
ber and Wednesday 5 December.

Notes were handed out to interested students. Additional notes can be collected from the office. Notes to

A huge thank you also to all the lovely volunteer supporters
of the MacqLit and MiniLit Program, who come in each week
to read with the students on the program. You are a blessing
to each child and to our community for your faithful service. I
have left a little gift at the Reception window to show my
gratefulness. If you have not picked one up yet please do.
Thank you also for letting me know when you have been unable to attend.
We will finish the volunteer reading program for this year in Week 7. If you would like to volunteer to read
with students on the program, it is not too late. Please send me an email
[email protected] and we can have a chat.
With appreciation,

P&C UPDATE
P&C AGM 22 October
Our Annual General Meeting is being held on Monday night at 7pm in the staff room. This is your chance
to find out and vote for the P&C executive for 2018/2019. We need
people who are passionate about helping our school to join us in roles.
We are still looking for someone who can join us as a Vice President; it
involves attending a meeting once a month (during school terms), be-
ing able to help out of the P&C email and Facebook page, occasionally
attend other meetings, helping out with subcommittee and a few other
things. I would say it’s about an hour or two a week depending on
which week it is. Some there’s nothing to do and other weeks there
may be a bit more. Please come and chat (or email) to Alison Glendining, Filip Cloetens or me if you’re in-
terested. You don’t have to have attended a P&C meeting before.
Band Subcommittee AGM
The Band Subcommittee AGM will be held tonight (Thursday 18th October) at 7pm. Please email [email protected] to confirm your attendance and obtain the location. All Band parents wel-comed.
Disco 2 November
Disco 2018 Permission notes will be sent out this week. Will your child go as a superhero, a villain, a prin-
cess or a fairy?? Please also look on Year Facebook pages
for the Volunteer Signup Roster for the night, or sign up
here: http://signup.com/go/fARAwci
