Messages from Principal
This has certainly been the year of change. Change is inevitable, it can be uncomfortable, painful, hard but
it can also have a positive outcome. Recent COVID-19 restrictions may be considered challenging. Howev-
er, from a positive perspective we can also look at those restrictions and be thankful of the procedures put
in place, which reduced the potential crisis to our health and secured the wellbeing of our communities.
Some change causes stress and anxiety in us all. Anxiety is a protective, productive and developmentally
necessary emotion that allows us to progress. It is our role as educators and parents, to support our chil-
dren to navigate these emotions by supporting them to use their strengths and show resilience.
Prospective Kiss and Drop Zone
One of the changes brought about by COVID was the introduction of a Pseudo Kiss and
Ride/Drop zone for drop off and pick up. This initiative has been met with enthusiasm
by many of the parents who have asked for this to be an ongoing action. In order to
have the front area designated as a Kiss and Drop zone signage will be changed mean-
ing that there will be no parking directly in front of the school and possibly some of the
parking further up Wideview Rd will be given restrictions to aide traffic flow around the school. To set up
this feature we need to approach the council who will investigate the traffic and school environment be-
fore making a decision about its viability. To ascertain the school communities view could you please com-
plete this short survey before Monday 22nd June. Follow the Link or use the QR Code

Safe road behaviours can save a life!
No matter how busy we are, there is always enough time to keep children safe. We teach the students
about road safety at school, but at the end of the day, they will model what they see their mums and dads
doing. Happily, the vast majority of grown-ups around our school do consistently model safe behaviours.
Travelling to and from school is a great opportunity to talk to your children about how they can keep safe
on the roads. Please never teach the children the wrong thing by modelling unsafe behaviours, even when
in a hurry. It’s when we are in a hurry that many accidents happen.
Term 2 Week 8

Attendance – Every Day Counts
In line with Government Schools Procedures all absences must be notified to the school within 7 days. Once
the 7 day period is up the teacher is locked out of the electronic rolls and the student will automatically be
marked as unjustified. Please send in a written note, an email, have a conversation with the teacher or
phone the school office with an explanation for the absence.
A day here and there does not seem like much but when your child misses just 1 day each fortnight that
equals 20 days per year which is 4 weeks of school. If this happens from Kindergarten to Year 12, that is
nearly 1 ½ years of school. Give your child every chance to succeed………EVERY DAY COUNTS.
Birthday Cakes
Reminder – please don’t send birthday cakes to share. The canteen will have birthday
packs that you can order. Another alternative is a fancy pencil or eraser to share with
classmates (as these can be wiped and don’t go in the mouth).
Covid-19 Updates
The Department of Education released on Thursday 11th of June an update to the guidelines for schools to
support with what changes are coming into effect. Resulting from these changes we shall be making
adjustments to allow additional activities to resume. Some of these changes will come into effect from
Monday the 15th of June, while others will not be enacted until the 20th of July. Activities that are
particularly relevant to our school are listed below.
Changes that come into effect from Monday 15th of June 2020:
School assemblies with 15 minute timeframes and no external visitors, including parents.
Choirs and performing arts at school, with safety protocols in place.
Students may attend other schools for essential curriculum related reasons or placements.
Incursions/external providers can provide activities that support delivery of curriculum.
Day field trips to outdoor locations with no physical distancing requirements, are able to take place.
School photos.
We shall also be reaching out to external service providers that supply services to specific students within
the school and invite them to be able to return and support within the school. They will be required to sign
and adhere to the guidelines listed on the External Visitors to School Site Form.
Community use activities used by students will commence Term 3. These include dance, martial arts,
language classes and sport skills development that are outside of school hours and will operate with limited
adult attendance on site.
Changes that come into effect from the 20th of July 2020:
Competitions aligned with current health advice (including activities run by external organisations).
Inter-school student events and competitions (choirs, sport , debating, public speaking).
SRE/SEE lessons.
P&C meetings – with a strong preference for on-line where possible.
Parent/teacher meetings, where these need to take place. There is a strong preference for online
meetings where possible unless involving serious matters that require face to face discussion.

Poetry in 5J
Since returning from home schooling due to COVID-19, we have been very busy in 5J. One of the things we
have been doing is writing some poetry. The theme that we worked on was “This is Where I Used to Live”.
We discussed a great deal about imagery, alliteration, rhyme patterns and other poetic devices. There were
some beautiful poems written that reflected some of our students’ time in isolation. I’m very proud of these
students and their work! Read and enjoy.
This is Where I Used to Live
The world was a different place,
Not so long ago,
Parties, holidays, catch ups and more,
Where did they all go?
Concerts, themes parks, restaurants,
Gone in a blink of an eye,
So once we see our friends again,
We may feel rather shy,
Hand sanitiser and face masks have now become our friends,
And now we can only hope and pray,
That this pandemic will soon end,
Stress has overcome us,
We used to feel so free,
Stuck between these four walls,
No friends of mine to see.

This is Where I Used to Live – Life before Covid-19
Crowded shops,
Singing concerts,
Fun all around,
Restaurants, movie night and lots of different sounds,
A time of space,
A change of pace,
Lots of school work to give,
Safety masks, so much to ask,
This is where I used to live,
Quiet streets,
No sound of feet,
The volume has gone to zero,
Doctors saving lives, will we survive?
Covid-19 will never be our hero.
By Isla Friend
This is Where I Used to Live
I used to live in a healthy environment,
Where my friends and family hugged me tight,
Why has this pandemic given us such a fright?
Why is school working at home?
Why can we talk only through our mobile phone?
Why do we have to feel stranded all alone?
Why is the world closing in on me?
Oh, it’s for our safety.
Losing track of days, months,
Even half the year,
Oh Lord, help me,
I’m trembling in fear,
What am I supposed to do?
How am I supposed to live?
We have to stay inside and spare, share and give.
5
Zoom, Skype and even Face time,
It’s like biting into a sweet green lime,
It helps me to talk to loved ones,
Even if we have to listen to their lame puns,
Thank you world,
Because you’ve made me think…
What’s most important to me?
I’ve realised who I’m meant to be.
By Jasmine Truskett-Jones
This is Where I Used to Live
The rubble on the ground,
Remind me of the trouble,
The trouble we went looking for,
Adventures would end on the floor,
When it happened,
I wished it hadn’t,
The siren sounding,
Sent my heart pounding,
We had to flee,
It was clear to me,
Busy, bustling streets reminding me,
The sip of tea burning me,
A little bee and a giant tree,
These were things reminding me…
This is where I used to live

2020 ICAS International Competitions and Assessment for Schools
Students in Years 2 to 6 are invited to participate in the ‘International Competitions and Assessment for Schools’ (ICAS), run by the University of New South Wales. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every student will receive a certificate and an online result report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised. The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take on the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision. ICAS Assessments are now online to allow greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results. Each ICAS assessment will be conducted on a separate day in the computer lab, beginning at 8am (before school starts) and will be supervised by Mrs McNally. Assessment School Years Sitting Date

some fun into 2020, it was decided at the P&C meeting Monday night that we would go ahead with our
Colour Run this year. It will be held in September. Keep an eye out for more information.
