General Information

About Taiwan & Taipei: Taiwan is a long and narrow island that has an area of around 36,000 square kilometers. It has a population of 23 million people and is located off the southeast coast of Asia. The island is relatively small but has a wealth of natural resources and culture. In terms of natural landscape, due to the ongoing process of tectonic plate movement, there are complex and diverse landscapes, with high mountains, hills, plains, basins, islands, a rift valley and coastline. In addition, since the Tropic of Cancer passes through the island, it has tropical, subtropical and temperate natural ecologies. From 1895, a large number of people migrated to Taipei and religion flourished and developed diversely. The city’s thriving and diverse religious culture provides spiritual comfort to citizens as well as brings them closer together. Taipei’s mix of different ethnic groups such as Minnan, Hakka and indigenous people gives it a uniquely colorful culture. Whether religion, architecture, language, living habits or cuisine, all are characterized by diversity and harmonious coexistence. The most obvious example is food: Taiwanese, Hakka, Hunanese, Sichuanese, Japanese, Korean and other foreign cuisines. Taipei excels in the areas of information and electronics technology. Today, the output value of the electronics and information technology industries accounts for one third of its total output value. Taipei is also a city where many talented people gather and is a place with thriving traditional and contemporary arts where there is both inheritance and innovation. Language: The official language in Taiwan is Mandarin. Taiwanese, Hakka, and Austronesian are also spoken. Emergency Numbers The local emergency numbers are:

- Ambulance & Fire – 119 - Police & Traffic Accident – 110 - English Speaking Directory Assistance – 106 - Emergency Rescue - 112

Team Canada will also have an established emergency number: TBC Canadian Trade Office, Taipei 6F, No. 1 SongZhi Road Xinyi District, Taipei 11047, Taiwan +886 (2) 8723-3000 [email protected] http://www.canada.org.tw/taiwan/index.aspx?lang=eng Emergency number to Ottawa: 613-996-8885 (free collect call) Phoning Taiwan Canada to Taiwan: Dial 011 + 886 + local number Canada to Taipei: Dial 011 + 886 + 2 (Taipei city code) + local number Taiwan to Canada: Dial 002 + 1 + 1 + local number Weather & Climate in August Located near the 25th parallel north, Taipei City lies between the East Asian mainland and the Pacific and is heavily affected by interaction between dry, cold high pressure air from Mongolia and moist, warm high pressure air from the Pacific, forming a subtropical monsoon climate. Summers in Taipei are hot and humid. The island may also be subject to tropical cyclones or 'typhoons', which bring thunderstorms.

Average low: 26°C; Average high: 33°C;

Daytime average: 30°C Banks & Currency The currency used in Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar. The exchange rate as of June 2, 2017 is approximately:

$1 CND = 22.32 NTD For foreign currency exchange, delegations may visit a bank designated by the government for foreign exchange, an international tourist hotel, or change in the Athletes' Village. When delegation exchanges foreign currency for NTD, please carefully retain your receipt because delegation must present it in order to exchange unused NTD before leaving. Postal Services The local postal service provides comprehensive postal services, including ordinary, prompt, registered, and express delivery, parcel service, and rental mailboxes. Hours of operation are typically 08:00 - 17:00, with weekend and holiday service available at some locations. Postage stamps may be purchased at hotels, post offices, or at various convenience stores. Items may be dropped off for postal delivery in a hotel mailbox or street-side mailbox.

Red mailboxes are for air post (left-hand side mail slot) and prompt delivery (right-hand mail slot) items. Green mailboxes are for ordinary local items, with the right-hand slot for mail destined for recipients within

Taipei and the left-hand for items with destinations outside of Taipei. Mail-sending service is also provided in the Athletes’ Village. If delegations require rapid delivery with a courier sent for pickup, delegations may contact a UPS or DHL service center. In addition, larger convenience stores such as 7-ELEVEN OK, Hi Life and FamilyMart offer international express service. Chunghwa Post Customer Service Line: 0800-700-365 (Monday through Friday: 08:00 - 17:30) Electricity Electrical sockets (outlets) in Taiwan are very similar to the electrical outlets found in Canada. The only difference is that some outlets do not have the third round pin socket in which you may require an adapter for.

The voltage in Taiwan is 110-200V, 60Hz (same as Canada) but please check your device to ensure the voltage and frequency are compatible. Water Drinking tap water is not advised, as we are not aware of the safety of tap water in Taiwan. Drinking bottled, boiled water or carbonated drinks is recommended. Time Zone Taipei is located in the GMT+ 8-time zone and does not adjust for daylight savings, meaning an 12-hour time difference from the Eastern Time zone in Canada and a 15-hour time difference from the Pacific Time zone in Canada.

Arrival Process

Human Quarantine Inspection The first procedure after disembarking is human quarantine inspection. Temperature sensors that display the temperature of passengers on a screen will be used to prevent international infectious diseases from entering here. In cases where symptoms of communicable disease are suspected, samples will be taken or the individual taken to hospital for checks. These cases will be followed up by the local Health Bureau after entry to prevent the spread of communicable disease here and protect the health of the individual involved. Please refer to the Centers for Disease Control website (http://www.cdc.gov.tw), Ministry of Health and Welfare for more information. Passport control: Passports must have at least 6 months validity upon entry. Participants should queue at the Universiade exclusive channel and show passport, invitation letter and arrival card to facilitate customs clearance. If an arrival card has not been filled in, please go to the arrival document inspection counter and pick up and fill in an arrival card. Entry & Exit Invitation: 1) Following the completion of the Team Canada Entry Form, participants will receive Entry and Exit Invitations by e-mail 2) Universiade participants will print out the Entry and Exit Invitation and confirm the information is correct. 3) Complete the Online Arrival Card on the National Immigration Agency website before entry to speed up the entry process. https://oa1.immigration.gov.tw/nia_acard/acardAddAction.action 4) Universiade participants should clear customs at the Universiade designated counter by showing the Entry and Exit Invitation along with a valid passport. Points for attention:

The Entry and Exit Invitation should be printed in color and the material should be suitable for affixing an immigration inspection stamp.

The Entry and Exit Invitation is regarded as the proof for visa-exempt and permit-free entry so it should be well-kept. Failure to show the Entry and Exit Invitation (or a valid visa) will, in principle, result in refused entry.

Excess Baggage In principle the airport shuttle buses will provide space for 20kg of luggage per person.
