Topic Work w/c 15.06.20

Our topic work this week will all be linked to History, and our topic is:

The 1960s

The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long.

This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived in

Britain during the 1960s and thinking about how it is different to our lives now.

Next week, we will look at some important events which happened during the

1960s.

Each day, you will be given an introduction to a topic and a chance to work on

some historical skills. You will also be given a more creative activity to do.

The work for the WHOLE WEEK is on this document – scroll down to find the

right day.

Monday 15th June

Today, you are going to have an overview of life in Britain in the 1960s. This

means we are going to introduce important things which happened during this

time.

Introduction

Watch this video of photographs and film clips taken during the 1960s in

Britain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH0kvxCfvG8 (‘Life in 60s

Britain’).

While you are watching the video, talk to an adult about the following:

• What do you notice about the clothes people are wearing?

• What do you notice about the toys that children are playing with?

• What is the same or different about your life?

Historical Skill

To understand changes within living memory.

Read this information about life in the 1960s. Ask an adult to help you sound

out any tricky words:

Page 3: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Now have a go at answering these questions. Remember to use the text:

1. What was the name of a famous pop band in the 1960s?

________________________________________________________________

2. Can you find 3 adjectives which describe the 1960s?

________________________________________________________________

Page 4: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

3. Why were the 1960s called ‘The Swinging Sixties?’

________________________________________________________________

4. Draw lines to match these things to the correct sentence:

5. Number these events in the order that they happened. The first one has

been done for you. If you are finding this tricky, ask an adult to help you

find the dates that these events happened and then put them into the

right order:

England won the football World Cup.

Colour TV began.

1. The first person went into space.

The first man walked on the moon.

Creative Activity

The past means something which has already happened.

The present means something which is happening now.

Look at the pictures on the next page of items from the 1960s, which was in

the past, and from the present. Can you sort them into items from the 1960s

and items from the present?

Page 5: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

You can cut out the pictures and stick them onto the table on the next page, or

you can draw them into the table. Can you find any other items from the

present which were different in the 1960s (the past)? You can ask an adult or

use the internet.

Tuesday 16th June

Today, you are going to look at music from the 1960s and compare it to music

in the present.

Introduction

Music was an important part of life in the 1960s. The most famous British band

during this time was ‘The Beatles.’ There were four members of the band:

John Lennon Paul McCartney George Harrison Ringo Starr

The Beatles are the biggest-selling music artists of all time. They have sold over

600 million records! Have a listen to some of their most famous songs:

‘Here Comes The Sun’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUNqsfFUwhY

‘Let It Be’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzvDofigTKQ

‘Hey Jude’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRnFHfI7WAQ

This last video was only recorded 10 years ago in London. Lots of people in the

crowd weren’t even born in the 1960s, but you can hear them singing along

really loudly. This shows just how popular the Beatles still are!

Page 8: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Historical Skill

To know about aspects of change in national life.

Choose a song by the Beatles (you can use one of the ones above) and then

choose one of your favourite songs. Try and pick a song that was written

recently or is played a lot on the radio now (in the present). Compare them by

filling in the table below:

Question Beatles Song My Favourite Song

What is the name of the

song?

Who is singing the

song? Is it a band or a

soloist?*

What is the song about?

What is the tempo?*

What is your favourite

lyric?*

*Vocabulary:

Soloist – Someone who sings on their own.

Tempo – How fast or slow something is.

Lyrics – Words in a song.

Page 9: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Creative Activity

Another one of the Beatles’ most famous songs is ‘Yellow Submarine.’ Here is

an animated version of the song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i1XD2yN4Ug

Imagine you are going on a journey in the yellow submarine. What would you

see? Who would you meet? Could it be the Beatles themselves?

Draw a picture of your adventure. Don’t forget to include a yellow submarine

in the picture!

If you would like to, you can use this as the outline:

Wednesday 17th June

Today, you are going to look at fashion from the 1960s and compare it to

fashion in the present.

Introduction

Fashion changed a lot in the 1960s and some designers still use 1960s styles to

influence their clothes today.

Have a look at these pictures of some of the most famous 1960s fashion

trends:

mini-skirt knee-high boots ‘kipper’ tie

turtleneck jumpers ‘bob’ haircut brightly coloured

patterns

Do you know anyone who wears things like this today?

Can you find out about any other fashion trends in the 1960s?

Page 11: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

If you live with someone who has any clothes from the 1960s, perhaps you

could ask them if you could try them on. We would love to see some pictures if

you do!

Historical Skill

To identify similarities and differences between life in the 1960s

and the present.

Here is a picture of a man and woman in ‘typical’ 1960s fashion:

Write 2 things which are the SAME about what the man is wearing in the

picture and what men wear today.

2. __________________________________________________________

Write 2 things which are DIFFERENT about what the man is wearing in the

picture and what men wear today.

Creative Activity

We have already seen that fashion in the 1960s used brightly coloured

patterns. Have a look at these patterns. What do you notice about them?

Page 13: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Imagine you are a fashion designer in the 1960s. Use some of these patterns

and what you know about 1960s clothes to design your own outfit from the

1960s.

If you would prefer to, you can copy some of these designs onto these outlines

of clothes:

Page 14: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Thursday 18th June

Today, you are going to look at toys and television from the 1960s and use

primary sources to find out more about them. A source is something we use

to help us understand the past. A primary source is something which was

there at the time.

Introduction

Most houses had one television by the end of the 1960s. At the start of the

1960s, there were only two television channels: the BBC and ITV. You could

not choose what you wanted to watch On Demand – you just had to watch

whatever was on. The channels also ‘signed off’ in the evenings, which meant

that you could not watch television in the middle of the night.

By the end of the 1960s, there was a third television channel: BBC2. It was the

first channel which showed programmes in colour rather than black and white.

Children had lots of different toys to play with during the 1960s. Have a look at

this video to see some of the most popular ones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIxijejUM4Y (‘Most Popular Toys from

the 1960s’).

How many of these toys do you recognise?

How are they the same or different to toys today?

Can you find out what other toys children played with during the 1960s? HINT:

Look at your activity from Monday to help you remember.

Page 15: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Historical Skill

To ask questions using primary sources.

Find out who you know who was alive in the 1960s, such as one of your

grandparents. This will be your primary source. Ask an adult if you can speak

to them about what they remember about toys and television was like in the

1960s. Remember to do this at a safe distance – you can speak to them on the

phone or via a video call.

Think of three questions you could ask them about toys and television:

1. ___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

2. ___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

3. ___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

If you do not know anyone who was alive in the 1960s, write down your

questions and we will try and find someone for you to ask once we are back at

school.

Creative Activity

A well-known children’s programme from the 1960s was ‘Watch with Mother.’

This showed a different programme every day, including ‘Andy Pandy’ and ‘Bill

and Ben.’ These were remade a few years ago. Have a look at pictures of the

original and new versions of the characters on the next page:

Page 16: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Original Updated

You can watch an episode of ‘Watch with Mother’ here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3P49n5m8bw (‘Watch with Mother

Paper Lanterns’).

• Why do you think the episode is in black and white?

• Do you think children enjoyed watching these programmes? Why?

• Do you think the sausage dog is helpful or silly? Why?

• Do you think Bizzy Lizzy wished for sensible things? Why?

Try and follow the lady’s instructions to make a paper lantern. You don’t need

to use wallpaper – a normal piece of paper will work just as well. Don’t forget

to take a photo and send it to school if you make one.

Page 17: The 1960s - Riverside Primary School€¦ · The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. This week, we will be looking at what life was like for people who lived

Friday 19th June

Friday is normally choosing time, so here are some ideas for activities

linked to our History this week which you could do with your Friday

afternoon:

1. Check and see if there are any activities from this week which you

have not completed, especially those which involve making or

designing something.

2. Teach yourself some 1960s dance moves by using this video:

https://vimeo.com/204336221. Perhaps you could use them to

make up a dance to a Beatles song.

3. Find some 1960s toys in your house and play with them – remember

that Barbie, Hot Wheels and Lego were all released in the 1960s.

Maybe you could find some toys that are similar to these to play

with. Watch Thursday’s video on the most popular toys in the 1960s

to remind yourself of what they were.

4. Ask an adult if you can make a 1960s-themed meal or cake. There

are some ideas here: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food-

recipes/g26899440/50s-60s-nostalgia-foods/.

5. Enjoy some time in the sunshine, if you can! Children would play

outside a lot during the 1960s, so why don’t you do it too?

Remember to stay safe if you do.

Have a lovely weekend and well done for all your hard work this week!
