Merry Christmas from your Church Council~ I’d like to introduce myself; I am Lori Bryant, one of the newest members of the church council. Service has always been a major part of who I am and this is an exciting new chapter in my service to St. Paul’s, having served on various fundraisers, as a Youth Board Member and Deacon over the past 20 years. I am honored to try on a new hat, and excited to be a part of a team of caring individuals that is looking to the bright fu-ture of our church. On Council, I’ve enjoyed participating in workshops designed to keep our church body on focus and thriving. I’ve learned as a community we’ve come a long way and we’re in great shape! I’ve also learned that in addition to a wide variety of thriving ministries here, our facility is in strong need for much needed building improvements. Nothing as exciting as furniture & flooring ladies, we’re talking air conditioning & roofing! Never popular pur-chases, Council is forced to recognize and plan for their eminent repairs & replacement. As healthy as our programs may be, our facility needs a shot in the arm to keep it healthy too. It’s December - the month of parties, parades, gifts and general merriment! We all know what a challenge it can be to give each special event or person in our lives the proper attention we’d like during this busy time. Many of us also find it a difficult time, missing loved ones no longer with us or away from home. Each of these things can make it a challenge to keep our eye on the true focus of the season, Jesus, his birth and the prom-ise it brings to each of us. I find my service and attendance at St. Paul’s “brings me back to center” during this hectic season. In all the craziness of the malls and traffic, I can open my heart, refocus and take pure joy in praising God, singing beautiful hymns and celebrating Christ’s birth surrounded by my church family. These are the gifts I’m most thankful for. I encourage each of you to share your time, talents and gifts with St. Paul’s. The gift you’ll get in return is priceless!

December is speeding right along. Hopefully this Advent season finds you waiting in eager anticipation for God’s gift of love and hope in Jesus’ coming to dwell among us. It is a busy time, and there are lots of exciting ministries happening at St. Paul this month: Pastor Mark and I are teaching Communion classes on 3 Wednesdays in December. We have one more class on December 15th from 4:00-5:00. The classes provide time for 2nd-5th graders to come and learn more about the sacrament of Holy Communion and the place it holds in the life of the church and our lives as Christians. Even if you missed the first 2, there is still a chance to come to the 3rd class. Christmas Pageant rehearsals are being held after Communion classes, so families can schedule accordingly. I have greatly enjoyed this opportunity to spend more time with the children as we have learned about God’s love

for us and the way that love is expressed through the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. The Christmas Pageant is happening on December 19th, between services in Morton Hall. Monica and the chil-dren have been working hard on this year’s production. Please come and support them as they retell the Christmas story through word and song. The Advent Fair was great fun this year. Lots of crafts were created, and lots of cookies decorated and eaten. Thank you to everyone who made the morning a success! A special thanks to Tod Hill for cutting out the beautiful Nativity Scene pieces for each family. Thank you also to everyone who contributed to the Sunday School offering at the Advent Fair. Their offering this year is going to Heifer Project, which is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending hun-ger and poverty and caring for the Earth. The students have made their next goal that of raising $25 to buy a share of a water buffalo, and most likely made it to that goal with the money donated through your gener-osity. Dinner for 8 IS still happening! Thank you to those who have signed up, letting either me or the office staff know of your interest. There is still time to let us know if you would like to be part of this ministry of fellow-ship. Lists will be put together for dinners to begin in January. This ministry is a great way to reconnect with current friends, or get to know new people in the congregation. Remember that we have 3 opportunities to worship together on Christmas Eve, at 5:00, 7:00 and 11:00. The 5:00 service is a children’s liturgy. We also have worship at 9:30 Christmas morning. I am excited for my first Christmas at St. Paul’s and look forward to seeing you at worship. These are just a few of the many ministries happening here at St. Paul. Please check out the rest of the newsletter for more news and chances to get involved. Advent and Christmas are joyous times in the church year, and provides us with opportunities to fulfill our purpose of connecting with God, each other, and the world. Blessings to you as you await and then celebrate the birth of Jesus and the fulfillment of God’s prom-ises through the incarna-tion! Pastor Sarah

DIRECTORS CORNER

December is a short but busy month for your preschool. We are on Christmas/New Year’s break beginning De-cember 20. Our school then resumes on Monday, January 3, 2011. Hallways and classrooms are decorated for this joyous season. We are teaching about the birthday of Jesus Christ and also are singing….“Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Our nutrition committee is busy planning and buying wonderful menu items for snacks. We have had dips with honey and yogurt, organic peanut butter spread on whole wheat bread, and farm fresh eggs. Each week the children have an opportunity to taste a few new items. It has been a great experience. We welcome any contri-butions of fresh fruits or vegetables to add to our menu. Highlights of this month have been: A visit from the Mud Mill on December 3, and our Christmas Program on December 9, the Salvation Army Children’s Wish Tree. A local business, the Mud Mill came to our school to help the children make ornaments for Christmas. Many children and their families participated. Each child picked a favorite ornament, painted it, and the Mud Mill will fire it, wrap it, and deliver it back to our school by December 15. Pictures are posted in our hallway. Our Christmas program was simply darling. The sanctuary looked so beautiful. We told the Christmas story with an alphabet book. All children participated and wore costumes or carried items matching their letter. We sang several songs and especially enjoyed “Jingle Bells” as everyone had “bells” to jingle. Pastor Sarah was with us and gave an opening prayer. Monte Hummel was also with us and played Christmas songs and accom-panied the children when it was time for their songs. We are again volunteering with the “Children’s Wish Tree” through the Salvation Army. The Preschool families and St. Paul families have been so generous to help this group of children. Thank you very much. We are happy to report that two new children started the week of December 6. They are both in Mrs. Met-tler’s classroom and are beginning to adjust and become comfortable with their new surroundings. We also have another child scheduled to start January 3. Our school enrollment is now at 49, and counting. We have the most wonderful children. Our program is be-coming recognized throughout the community for its innovative curriculum, loving staff, and Christian environ-ment. If you know of a family looking for Preschool placement in 2010-2012, please have them contact me for a tour, brochure, or our website address. We wish you a blessed holiday season. Sincerely, Rita Spohn, Director

The Return of the Shoes So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate, and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of Peace. (Ephesians 6:14) It has been five years since St. Paul has had the opportunity to provide shoes for our community. It is time to renew this tradition. Join The Social Ministry Board in announcing the good news of peace by donating new shoes during the month of January. Shoes can be left in the narthex or in Morton Hall on the Sundays January 2, January 9, January 16, and January 23. You may bring either children or adult sized shoes. Athletic shoes are often preferred. Velcro shoes are appre-ciated for the smaller sizes. Socks would also be a great addition. I would like to share a little information about this year's recipients. Both adult and children's shoes will be given to the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. This shelter has been supported in many ways by our con-gregation under the devoted leadership of Ray Hinders.

Most of the children's shoes will be given to one. TLC School for Homeless Children in Stockton. Many of these children live at the homeless shelter. This school has an interesting history that I wanted to share with you. For 17 years TLC School operated on the St. Mary's Interfaith Community Services Campus adja-cent to the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. In spring 2009 the St. Mary's leaders announced they were closing the school. They cited that the resources needed to maintain the school would be better used else-where. Thanks to committed community benefactors the school reopened at the Stockton Alternative High School Campus in September 2009. The San Joaquin County Office of Education pays for one teacher and some classroom supplies; Stockton Unified School District provides classroom space; and the balance of the expenses are raised by a volunteer board named the one.TLC Foundation. This foundation pays for additional staff, the majority of the classroom supplies, a contracted counselor, school uniforms and the maintenance of a donated van that provides transportation for children who do not live close to the school. A donation of shoes would be greatly appreciated. Contact Kathy Knight if you would like more information about TLC. She is a member of the foundation.

Sunday School news for December Our Sunday School students were able to purchase their flock of chickens for Heifer Project and have chosen a share in a water buffalo as their next offering goal. De-cember is a busy month for us. On December 5th all children are invited to participate in the Advent Fair in Morton Hall during the Sunday School hour. There will be Christ-mas crafts to make, Christmas cookies to eat, and much fun to be had by all. Even if you do not usually come to Sunday School we hope you come for this special time. On December 19th the Christmas pageant takes place during the Sunday School hour. Lastly there will be no Sunday School for children on December 26th or January 2nd as the Sunday School staff wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year with your families.

Kudos to Greg Churchill for running the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. on Oc-tober 31st. Greg com-pleted the run in 4hrs & 39 minutes. He raised nearly $5000 for the Semper Fi Fund which helps wounded warriors and their fami-lies. Greg, thank you for this great deed. Semper Fidelis!

The beginning of a new year is always a good time for reflection, and this year, why not make good health one of your resolutions for the coming year? It is never too late to change bad habits, and never too late to benefit from adopting better health habits. So be good to yourself and your loved ones by planning now to live a healthier (and longer) life. Stop smoking, or don’t start if you are a non-smoker. Eat a balanced diet with emphasis on vegetables and fruits, lean meat, lower salt, and SMALLER PORTIONS. Get regular exercise every day if possible, but at least three times a week. And remember to smile as you go about your day -- you will lift the spirits of others, as well as your own.
