Bulls & Bears - Christian Talbott

This year, I had the opportunity to recreate a SIFEproject rom last year: a board game based on theconcept o Chutes and Ladders that educates studentson the basics o the U.S. stock market. This game, called Bulls and Bears, was created entirely by SIFEmembers through a website called thegamecrater.com. The target audience or the game is Junior Highand High School students.

Thus ar, we have played the game with 30 students

rom an ater-school tutoring program called MIKA. Wecurrently have two more events with MIKA scheduledat the end o February. We are also planning to playthe game with kids rom the YMCA and Boys and GirlsClub. All events thus ar have gone very well and thekids have expressed their newound understandingor the stock market.

    Bulls and Bears

We all know it is much more un to learn while playinga game, which is why weve decided to create a board

game that teaches kids ages 12-18 about investmentsand the stock market. We plan to visit variousorganizations and play the game with their at-riskyouth.

I learned that we should saveour money, and let it growand build up.

This quote comes rom Joey,a 12 year old boy who attendsan ater-school programcalled MIKA. He, along with20 other at-risk youths romMIKA, attended a gameo Budgetball, put on byVanguards SIFE team.

Beore playing Budgetball, these kids learned the basicso budgeting by participatingin a nancial lesson. Thistutorial taught the childrenabout what scal choices theywill need to make when theyare older and have a monthlyincome. For example, the kidswere given 5 dierent choiceso housing situations, rom

living with their parents orree to renting a house on thebeach, the most expensiveoption. Thanks to guidancerom SIFE volunteers, everysingle youth was able toeectively budget theirmoney, with some let over tosave in a bank account.

This training led to playingBudgetball, where students

not only had to run and passa volleyball down a eld toscore points, but also spendtheir Budget Bucks eectively.

The two teams were veryevenly matched, and it wasevident that the winnerwould be determined by howwell the teams used theircombination o Sacrices andPower-Ups. In the end, thanksto one team taking on some

difcult Sacrices, they wereable to clinch a win. In exitinterviews with the kids, manysaid that ater playing thegame, they were more awareo the money they spendand would aim to save theirnances better in the uture. We were very thankul orthis opportunity to serve andor an organization like SIFEto inspire lives through thepositive power o business.
