THE BIRTH OF THE GAMES

The Biennial Intervarsity Games (B.I.G.), formerly known as T.I.G. (Triennial Intervarsity Games) from late 1970s to early 2000, has its origin dating back to 1949 as an initial cricket and tennis contest between the University of Hong Kong (led by its then Vice-Chancellor, Sir Lindsay Ride) and the former University of Malaya in Singapore. Over decades, it grew from a friendly game between two universities into a quadrangular international event for student athletes to com-pete in a wide range of sports on a biennial basis.

THE EVOLUTION

With the participation of more than a thousand young athletes and various cultural/social functions complementing the contests, B.I.G. has grown into a large scale inter-university mul-ti-activity sports event; it has been supported, since the 1980s, by not only the Vice-Chancel-lors of HKU of those times - former Governors Lord MacLehose of Beoch, Sir Edward Youde, and Sir Christopher Patten, and former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa for instance - but also celebrities in Hong Kong, such as Dr Henry Fok Ying-tung, Dr Stanley Ho Hung-sun, and Sir Ti-liang Yang. Notwithstanding the fact that the Games has been suspended for ten years in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the revival of the Games in 2007 in Hong Kong has proven to be a big success accompanied by extensive media coverage: the resilience and radi-ance of student athletes once again became widely recognized by the community.

THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Through the decades, the University of Hong Kong has played its role as a key participant of the Games and, taking turns with other founding universities, undertaken the task of holding it. The upcoming Games will no doubt maintain the high standrads set in the past and contin-ue the tradition.
