While some families managed to maintain, even strengthen family ties, Carole’s nomadic childhood as one of six siblings, parented by an unloving mother and unreliable father, might have been a tale written by Kafka. However, though creature comforts were few, through God’s Grace, she was instilled with an innate mission to nurture and share. Acting on her belief that it was more blessed to give than to receive, when one of her brothers yearned for a certain jacket worn by some of his more fortunate schoolmates, she saved up all of her earnings from babysitting, shoveling manure and snow to buy one for him. Following high school, Carole entered the University of Delaware with a scholarship. It was there she would earn her first degree as a Counselor. Twenty-nine years later she had accumulated three Master’s Degrees in various and widely diverse avenues of Generalized Behavioral Disorders ranging from Pastoral Counseling to Sexual Assault. Even after marrying and becoming a loving mother of a son and a daughter, she saw a need and attended her children’s school tutoring struggling students. Her daughter visits often; however sadness remains in the lives of both with the recent death of her son. Though Carole continues to grieve, that unfortunate event has not cast a shroud over her giving heart. In fact, our unsung neighbor-philanthropist continues a lifelong calling to fulfill the needs not only of fellow residents but other causes as well. In this season of giving thanks, we are so blessed to have such a shining light in our community. Barbara E. Kindred at Home

Many associate the holidayswith time spent with loved ones. When your family makeup haschanged dramatically due toloss, excitement surrounding theholidays can often turn toanxiety and even grief.

This is a normal, healthyresponse to a family change andis a unique, personal experiencethat differs from person toperson. There is no right orwrong way to feel. Many peoplefind that they never “get over”the difference; rather, they learnto live in their new normal.

If your family dynamic isdifferent this holiday season, there are things you can do tomake it easier on your emotionsand experience.

The most important thing isto practice self-care and remainpatient as you learn to navigateand adapt to new terrain. Thismay include exercise, eatingregular meals, talking withfriends or family and restfulsleep. Blair Klayko and RebeccaSandvall, BSW, 386-871-1953for Kindred at Home. HappyHolidays to All
