PREFACE The 4th Congress of The Andalusian Society of Organ and Tissue Transplantation (SATOT) T HE Congress brought together over 250 specialists in the field of organ and tissue transplantation from all over Spain. On the Inauguration Day, the previous president of the SATOT, Dr. Miguel González-Molina, was named Member of Honor. He was the founder and driving force behind this new scientific society, formed to improve the diffusion of knowledge in the world of organ transplants. He himself opened the Congress with a presentation about lipids and organ transplantation. Various Update Groups were held over two intensive working days. The first was related with “Strategies to increase the number of organs available for transplant”, at which are analysis was made of the growth in the rate of organ donation in Spain and in Andalusia. One of the main factors contributing to this growth has been the continued reduction in the loss of organs due to family refusal. Additionally, the rise in the mean age of the donors has necessitated protocolized studies to guarantee the viability of organs from expanded criteria donors, in order to reduce the uncertainty surrounding primary failure, malfunction or death of the recipient. Another Group “Advances in kidney and liver transplantation” afforded an up-to-date and crit- ical vision of organ function among retransplant cases, recipients with Hepatitis C virus infections or hepatocarci- noma. Finally, the Group of presentations - “New technologies in the transplant world” - included conferences ranging from MARS type purification systems to novelties in arti- ficial circulation systems, including living donor kidney transplantation performed by laparoscopy. Such renowned speakers as Sir Roy Calne, Rene Adams, Manuel Pascual and Bertrand Kasiske took part in these sessions, along with prestigious experts from Spanish trans- plant institutions. Moreover, 60 oral and 141 poster presen- tations were presented by Spanish professionals involved in transplantation activities. The Closing Day witnessed the awarding of prizes for the best presentations delivered by medical residents and the Giralda Prize, presented by the Andalusian Liver Trans- plant Association, in recognition of the best study in the field of liver transplantation. Finally, I would to invite all transplantologists to partic- ipate in the 5 th Congress of our Society to be held in March 2008.
