SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR Our Schools Spectacular team of 25 students performed with students from across the state for what is the NSW
DoE’s showcase for the creative and performing arts students in NSW on Friday evening the 25th November. What a
fabulous event !! Congratulations to all those students who performed at this sensational state performance. Over seven
thousand students performed for a capacity filled Qudos Arena at Homebush. Special mention should be made of Ruhi
Lavaki a featured vocalist; Featured dancers include: Urban Dance Ensemble Cameron Doherty, Branden Van Oosten
and Amin Taylor. Cameron was also selected to perform in two other ensembles , the Ballet and Musical Theatre En-
sembles. I was thrilled to be at such a wonderful event and to know that my students all helped to make the night a
stunning success.
Orientation Day : Year 7 2017 Last Tuesday saw the beginning of a new pathway for many Year 6 students. 195 students attended Northmead CA-
PA High School to familiarise themselves with the school and its surrounds. Year 9 Peer Support Students did an out-
standing job of mentoring the students on Orientation Day and I am certain they will continue to be outstanding role models throughout the coming years. We look forward to greeting all our new students and hope that they are as excit-
ed as we are about their new beginning. Next year we are initiating a new four day program for Year 7 students . This
will include Google boot camp for students, peer support , welfare initiatives such as being part of a team, caring for others, cyber safety and digital citizenship. There will also be a focus on literacy and numeracy ensuring all students
are catered for in their lessons. Peer Support leaders and Senior Leaders will be essential to this program. I look for-
ward with much anticipation to watching our Year 10 , 11 and 12 students further their leadership. In addition to the
student Google boot camp there will be a boot camp for parents on the Thursday evening of Week 3. This is open to all Year 7 and 8 parents who would like to learn more about Chrome books and Google. Thank you to Mrs Scott and Mr
Johnson for committing to this boot camp. It is an ideal time for parents in year 7 as their children are away at camp.
I look forward to seeing parents at the beginning of next year at the P&C or our Meet the Teachers Night for Year 7 parents.
In the meantime, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Very Happy Christmas which is filled with love,
joy and peace, and a safe enjoyable holiday.
Regards
Narelle Vazquez

PBL KLA Assessment Task: Year 8 2016
During Terms 2 and 3 Visual Arts students in Year 8 worked on creating canvas paintings
for a PBL Task which involved a collaboration between Visual Arts and the English Faculty.
The task was loosely based on the concept of ‘Reflecting Culture’. For many students this
was the first time they had painted on a canvas. This task provided the opportunity for
students to hone their skills of paint application, colour and composition as well as the
other elements of design.
It also gave the opportunity for students to invest meaning in their artworks and to rein-
force the notion the importance of visual communication.
Students began the task by creating several collages in their sketchbooks. Although the
subject or theme of their collages was their own choice, the topic of Culture was intro-
duced to them. They soon realised that Culture was a hugely diverse topic, and could real-
ly relate to any aspect of contemporary society, from fashion to motorsports! Students
also recognised that the technique of Collage (one of the most important inventions of
the 20th Century) linked well to the diversity of the topic.
The next step was to identify their favourite or most successful collage and then trace it
onto a clear, plastic acetate sheet. This image was then projected directly onto their can-
vas, therefore significantly enlarging their original image. Painting then began in earnest,
students using their collages as a guide to colour mixing and paint application.
The students worked very hard to capture the essence of their original collages. Many
students worked throughout lunchtimes in the art rooms to get their paintings that little
bit better….. with some truly wonderful results.
We have included some images here as a selection of some of the most successful works.
Enjoy!
