THE PASTOR’S CORNER

N ot long ago I had several people ask about the book of Revelation. It is not a book we talk about much, but perhaps

we should. This book seems to be one we often hear about, wonder about, and maybe even, in one sense, fear. I know for many years I stayed away from this book. I did not understand it, so, yes, I was apprehensive about it. However, what I have come to realize is that we sing this book all time in our liturgy and with many of our hymns that we know and love: Holy, Holy, Holy, Shall We Gather at the River, Crown Him with Many

Crowns, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, along with others. With this book so much a part of our worship, talked about in our culture and in the movies, what can we say about this book called Revelation? First…the word Revelation comes from the Greek word “apocalysis,” which means to reveal, uncover, unveil, see with new eyes, in other words a revelation. This word was first used in Jewish literature in the 1st century B.C when the Jews were under persecution. Therefore, it never would have occurred to John to understand this book in a way it is used today. This book was meant to be a word of blessing and well-being (Shalom) to the 7 churches to which this letter was written. These seven churches were having issues, some with persecution, some with complacency, and some with wondering how much could they compromise in religious and social issues and still remain faithful to Christ. To these churches, John brings a word of hope, as Jesus did, in the form of word pictures. Why…because they get our attention and stick in our mind.

Some of these word pictures…

Lion – the symbol for Judah, the tribe from which Jesus comes. Lion signifies royalty and strength. In John’s image God has a scroll – Who, then, is worthy to open this scroll? No one until the Lion. Yet, what John sees is a Lamb signifying meekness, gentleness, and sacrifice. Which image fits Jesus? The answer is both. Jesus comes to his power through the suffering death of the Lamb.

A work in progress… A Christian is always in the process of becoming, never in the state of having become. The Christian life is not being pious but becoming pious, not being healthy but becoming healthy, not being but become, not rest but exercise. We are not yet [what we are to be], but we are becoming it. It is not yet done and has not yet happened. It is, however, going on and coming to be. It is not the end, but it is the way.

Beast - Is this literal or another word picture? All scholars agree, since literally there are no 7-headed monsters coming out of the sea – that it is a word picture. In Chapter 13, the beast conquers by war, oppresses people of every land, is slain yet lives. In Chapter 5, the Lamb is slain yet lives, conquers by sacrifice, ransoms and sets free people of every land. The question is to whom do we belong. In the end, however, God makes all things new – a new Jerusalem, a Genesis, a Re-creation – Shall We Gather at the River. Revelation is about life. We have a God of life, not death, a God who gives a future and, as Dr. Craig Koester once said, “And who would want a God less than that!”

From the bishop

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things”

(1 Corinthians 13:7).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace and peace to you in the name of the crucified and risen Christ. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have equal access to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this decision is a welcome sign of hope and a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court’s decision and remain deeply concerned because of their understanding of Scripture. This decision affects each of us, some profoundly, and we are not of one mind. Let us continue to accompany one another with prayer, love and mutual respect as we reflect on this new reality and remem-ber Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians about the enduring power of God’s love. The ELCA social statement “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust” (2009) neither endorses nor forbids same-gender marriages and rec-ognizes that we have differing understandings and convictions on this matter. In its decision, the court stated that “the First Amendment en-sures that religious organizations and persons are given proper pro-tection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths.” According to this church’s social statement on human sexuality, all decisions about recognizing, supporting and holding publicly account-able same-gender relationships are entrusted to congregations. Rec-ognizing that the church is not of one mind on this subject, our 2009 actions provide that congregations and clergy should discern together

Page 13: The ANCHOR - BSE Hosting

whether to recognize such relationships and to what degree. Pastors are to engage in conversation, discernment and partnership with the congregations who have called them prior to solemnizing or presiding over a same-gender marriage. On the other hand, no pastor is obligated to solemnize the marriage of any couple, same-gender or different-gender, whom the pastor cannot in good conscience marry. As Lutheran Christians, we continue to be a church that engages in conversation and discernment in all aspects of our faith and life. Cre-ating space for respectful conversation and dialogue continues to be an important part of our life together. A helpful resource for engaging in difficult conversations is “Talking Together as Christians about Tough Social Issues.” In addition, the ELCA Ministry to and with Same-Gender Couples and their Families Working Group remains in the process of completing its work. A report of the group’s findings and possible recommendations will be presented to the ELCA Church Council at its November meeting. We seek to see our differences as a gift to be celebrated as we live out that which unites us: the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ who leads us into mission and ministry in the world. In the midst of this change, we are first and foremost church – a church that proclaims the good news of Jesus Christ. May God bless, guide and strengthen you each day as you go in peace and serve the Lord. Your Sister in Christ,

A BIG THANK YOU. . .

Ox—The ox sometimes appears in Renaissance art as a symbol

for the nation of Israel. Like, the Evangelist, is sometimes

represented by a winged ox. In general, the ox symbolizes

strength, service and patience. Jesus makes reference to oxen bearing a load when he invites

his followers, “Take my joke upon you, and learn from me, for

I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and

my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:29-30 ESV.

To my Friend Pastor Mary and the Long Lake Church,

What a privilege to have you for a friend! I know nothing is done by chance. So how are you doing Pastor Mary, the church and your family?

My family is doing okay. We have a new baby girl whose name is “Dunie.” added to the boys. So it was not my plan but the Lord arranged it this way.

My family and I are praying for you and your church. I will never forget how you’ve been so supportive of me. I don’t have enough words to express my thanks to you but I do believe God will keep on blessing your ministry. Please say hello to family and the whole church. I hope to see you face to face someday. Thank you for your prayers, support and everything.

Much love,

Pastor Michael

STEWARDSHIP We have now completed seven months of our fiscal year at Long Lake

Lutheran Church. How fast time flies! We suspect that our congregation is not different than others, where the giving units

generally fall into three groups. THE SAINTS – We do not ask more of them and are grateful for the example they set for those that are DEPENDABLE and for those that

are BLESSED. THE DEPENDABLE –Those who understand that our church operating expenses increase 3-5% each year and we must, and do, rely on them.

THE BLESSED – Are those that for many reasons have been

blessed financially and often support many different needs. They also understand the need to increase their annual

support as expenses increase. We look to the Blessed for financial support for specific

“wants” that cannot be included in our annual budget. The recent completion of the Outdoor Beautification Project is a great example of financial support from those “BLESSED”.

The Bible has much to say about those who are blessed.

Tell those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust their money, which will soon be gone. But their trust should be in the

living God, who richly give us all we need for our enjoyment. (I Timothy 6:17)

Don’t store up treasurers here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Wherever

your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be. Matthew 6:19, 21)

I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in

heaven.
