Performance Music Program (Junior School)

Learning to play an instrument is a rewarding experience and a proven method of enhancing academic results by advancing the cognitive development of young students. The Ipswich Grammar School Junior Music Program affords a range of musical opportunities from Prep through to Year 6.

What instruments can my son learn at IGS?

Our specialist instrumental staff can provide qualified tuition on the following instruments:

Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Euphonium, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion, Drum Kit, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Piano, Guitar, Electric Bass and Voice.

When are Instrumental Music lessons available?

Not all lessons are immediately available from Prep-6 due to the physical requirements of learning; however, enrolment for younger students may be possible following consultation and assessment by Instrumental Music staff and subsequent approval by the Director of Performance.

Years 4-5 Band Program

Integral to Ipswich Grammar School’s approach to holistic education; the following initiatives form part of our Band Program.

Year 4 and 5 Band ProgramAll Year 4 and 5 students will participate in the Immersion Band Program. This will include a free weekly group tuition lesson and an ensemble rehearsal during school time.

Year 6 Students in Year 6 have the option to continue with their instrument as part of the extra-curricular Music Program and receive subsidised tuition for attending an ensemble.

Performance Opportunities

In addition to the Year 4 and 5 program other, extra-curricular ensembles open to Junior School students include:

• Preludio Strings (Junior String Ensemble)• Jazz Ensemble (Years 6 to 9 students)• Percussion Ensemble (Years 6 to 9)• Junior Guitar Ensemble (Audition)• Guitar Orchestra (Audition)• Junior Choir (Years 4 to 6)These ensembles rehearsals occur before and after school.

Boys are required to progress from beginning and intermediate to senior ensembles when they have reached the appropriate AMEB grade or year level.

Lesson Prices

Private lessons are billed per the Queensland Music Teachers Association Schedule and current fees are set at $36 (plus GST where applicable) per half hour lesson.

The opportunity to learn a musical instrument and participate in the cultural traditions of Secondary School is highly regarded. Tuition is available on a range of instruments.

Performance Music Tuition

To be accepted into the instrumental program, boys must be enthusiastic, exercise self-discipline, be able to commit to regular practice and must have the full support of their parents. Participation in ensembles and choirs is a key component of the program. To enrol your son in the Instrumental Music Program, complete an Instrumental Music Enrolment Form located on the school website, www.ipswichgrammar.com/education/the-arts

Enrolment Conditions and Timetabling

• Lessons are taught on either a one-to-one or small group basis and are 30 minutes in duration.Students are placed on a 10-lesson-a-day rotating timetable to ensure minimal disruption. Thissystem is adopted across GPS Schools and allows students time to return to class and receiveadditional support. Research demonstrates that students benefit from being able to balancecore curriculum and extra-curricular activity during the school day

• There are a limited number of before school and break time lessons available. Priority for theselessons are given to Senior School students in the first instance. A one-hour lesson is an optionthat should be considered by students that study Senior Music Extension or are at Grade 5AMEB level and above

• Where staff are absent, Instrumental Tutors will contact parents directly and make-up lessonswill be negotiated

• If the student is unable to attend a lesson due to a school related event, i.e. excursion/incursion,assessment/exam etc., it is the responsibility of the student to make an alternative arrangementwith the Music Tutor at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled lesson. If this courtesy isoverlooked, lesson fees apply, and the lesson may be forfeited

• If the student is absent due to illness, notification should be forwarded to the InstrumentalMusic Coordinator/Director of Performance by email no later than 7am. If notification is notreceived the lesson may be forfeited

• Parents need to provide two weeks notice, prior to the start of a school term to withdraw.Ceasing lessons within a school term requires parents to honour payment for the eight-weekTerm in full

• If a student wishes to cease tuition at the end of a Term or for the following year, parents mustnotify the Instrumental Music Coordinator via email, no less than 2 weeks before the start of aschool calendar Term

• Students are automatically re-enrolled for lessons in the following school year unless parentsprovide notice in advance

• Payment for lessons must be in advance and lessons may not be conducted in arrears

• Lessons missed without notice are not transferable and may be forfeited

• The ensemble discount applies to instrumental tuition supporting the ensemble position

Musical Theatre

Ipswich Grammar School has a long and proud history of Musical Theatre and provides opportunities for students to explore and develop relevant skills. A combination of Music, Drama and Visual Arts students participate to realise a Musical Theatre Production bi-annually. Positions for Lead, Chorus, Band, Stage and Production Crew are auditioned and awarded on proficiency and attendance history. Rehearsal frequency and preparations are coordinated through the Director of Performance.

Art Club

Art Club is the perfect activity for boys to process the days learning through hands on creative projects. The Art Club opens from 3.15-4.30pm in A1 for Year 4 to Year 8 students to attend on either a Tuesday or Thursday after school. They will enjoy learning a range of Visual Arts techniques and be able to reflect on their achievement with afternoon snacks provided. A link is provided on Parent Lounge to apply and participate. Limited spaces are available.

Theatre Sports

Drama students have the opportunity in Year 12 to participate in The Queensland Theatre Sports Competition during Term 2 and 3. Theatre Sports rehearse once per week after school. Heats and finals are hosted during the evening at local and regional venues once or twice per Term depending on the progress stage of the competition. Students compete with government and independent schools across Queensland.
