Chapters 1‐3  It was the middle of the night. Everyone was sleeping and scary things were outside. Sophie could not sleep. She looked out her window and saw something. It was tall, black and thin. Sophie was scared.   Sophie was frightened. The tall, black, and thin thing was a giant. He was 12 feet tall and had big ears. The giant walked up to each house in the neighborhood carrying a trumpet. The giant blew his trumpet into the bedroom windows, but it didn’t make any noise. Sophie was scared.   The giant saw Sophie. She yelled and hid under her blanket. The giant reached into Sophie’s window. He picked her up and started to run away. Sophie didn’t know where they were going. She thought the giant wanted to eat her. Sophie was scared.                         

Chapters 4‐6  The giant ran past forests and rivers before stopping at a cave. This was his home. He put Sophie on the floor. Sophie learned about giants.   The giant told Sophie that most giants eat people. He said that people have different flavors. Some people taste sour and some people taste sweet. The giant told Sophie that he never eats people. His name was the Big Friendly Giant, or BFG. Sophie learned about giants.   The BFG took Sophie to his cave because she had seen him. People were not supposed to see giants. The BFG wanted Sophie to live with him now because he didn’t want other people to know that giants were real. Sophie learned about giants.   There were ten giants in the world. They all lived near the cave. The BFG was the smallest giant. The others were ugly and mean. They ate people every night. Sophie had to hide from them. If they knew she was there, they would eat her. Sophie learned about giants.   Sophie asked the BFG why he was in her neighborhood. He said that he used his trumpet to blow happy dreams into the rooms of the children. The BFG could hear dreams with his big ears. He used a net to catch them in the air. He kept them in bottles in his cave. Sophie learned about giants.            

Chapters 7‐9  Since the BFG did not want to eat people, he ate snozzcumbers. Snozzcumbers were a very big vegetable that tasted like fish and frogs. It was terrible, but it was the only food that grew near the cave. The BFG ate vegetables.   One of the mean giants heard the BFG talking to Sophie. He wanted to find Sophie and eat her. Sophie hid behind a snozzcumber so the giant would not see her. The BFG wanted the giant to leave. He told the giant to taste the terrible snozzcumber. The giant tasted it, spit it out, and left. Sophie was safe. The BFG ate vegetables.                               

Chapters 10‐12   The BFG went to catch more dreams, so he put Sophie in his pocket. The other giants teased the BFG when he walked by because he was different. Sophie was very scared. The BFG caught dreams.   The BFG ran until he reached a field. He swung his net in the air to catch the dreams. He caught a happy dream and a scary dream. He put the dreams in jars. The BFG only gave happy dreams to children. The BFG caught dreams.   The BFG and Sophie went back to the cave. The BFG took out the jars with the new dreams. He put a label on each jar and wrote what the dream was about. The cave was filled with dream jars. The BFG was not very good at writing because he never went to school. The BFG caught dreams.                          

Chapters 13‐15  Sophie wanted to stop the other giants from eating people. She made a plan that the BFG would give the Queen a scary dream.  The dream would be about the mean giants eating boys and girls. It would tell the Queen that the BFG and Sophie would help her. Then, Sophie would go into the Queen’s room and tell her that her dream was real. Sophie made a plan to stop the giants.   The BFG made the scary dream for the Queen. When the dream was ready, the BFG and Sophie went to the Queen’s palace. Sophie made a plan to stop the giants.   The BFG and Sophie looked into different windows of the palace to find the Queen’s room. She was sleeping. The BFG blew his trumpet to give the Queen the scary dream. Sophie sat by her window. She waited for the Queen to wake up while the BFG hid in the garden. Sophie made a plan to stop the giants.                        

Chapters 16‐18  In the morning, the Queen woke up. She was very upset by the dream. She read the newspaper and saw that her dream was true. Many boys and girls disappeared during the night. The Queen learned about giants.   The Queen saw Sophie by the window. She remembered her from the dream. Sophie told the Queen the dream was true. Giants were real! The Queen invited Sophie and the BFG to eat breakfast with her. The Queen learned about giants.   They ate breakfast in the ballroom. It was the only room big enough to fit the BFG. The BFG ate a lot of eggs, sausage, and toast. It tasted a lot better than snozzcumbers. While they ate, Sophie and the BFG told the Queen that they wanted to stop the mean giants from eating people. The Queen wanted to stop them too. The Queen learned about giants.   The Queen called her troops for help. They made a plan to stop the giants. The BFG led the troops to the giants. The Queen learned about giants.                    

Chapters 19‐21  The troops tied up the giants while they were sleeping. They hooked them onto helicopters. The helicopters carried all of the giants back to the Queen. Sophie and the BFG caught the giants.   The giants were placed in a large pit that they could not escape from. The giants could only eat the terrible snozzcumbers now. Sophie and the BFG caught the giants.   People from all over the world thanked the BFG and Sophie for stopping the giants. They were given awards and presents. The Queen gave the BFG and Sophie houses by the palace. Sophie taught the BFG how to read and write. The BFG became a great writer. In fact, the BFG wrote this story! Sophie and the BFG caught the giants.
