Welcome to our succulent class! I hope you enjoy the time we will spendtogether designing the arrangement you're going to make this morning.
Probably the first and most asked question is: What is a succulent?
This can be a tricky question to answer! All cacti are succulents, but not allsucculents are cacti. The word succulent simply means juicy and fleshy. Allsucculents have the ability to store water in their flesh. Cacti are succulents withspine cushions called areoles that can bear spines and/or flowers, but the plantsdo not have branches or leaves. Succulents do not have areoles and can havebranches and leaves. Yes, you may need to read this info several times for it tos ink i n . . .
This class is not going into great detail about cacti, because that is a wholedifferent subject and the Bluebonnet House & Garden Center plans to host aseminar on that in 2016.
One of the best ways to introduce yourself to succulents is to sit down and do asearch for succulents on the internet. It is a world within itself, but can becomevery confusing at time. It never hurts—and I encourage it strongly—to go backand re-read information about succulents. Each time you will become betteracquainted with the plants you are introducing yourself to!
Today is going to be a soft introduction to the world of succulents. You will notbe discouraged from combining succulents and cacti, but most of the informationpresented in this class will be focused on the varieties of succulents and factsabout them.
So enjoy yourself, have fun designing and planting your succulent gift toyourself!
