Talk, talk, talk talk…..

I have been thinking about conversations recently. I mentioned in a pasteditorial that I enjoy talking to complete strangers in my attempt to getpeople to write something for the Bridge. I was reflecting the other dayon how I had had quite long talks with a surprising range of people overthe course of two days. There were some six year olds on the subject oflearning to read, two stunningly articulate teenagers about the meaning oflife and the universe and why teachers were so exercised about correctschool uniform; and with a ninety two year old on wartime cooking. Alinguist might remark on the different ”voices” used in each of the conversations; asociologist would notice the different demographics of these people; a psychologist wouldsee what core beliefs were displayed. I just know that being able to have these humancontacts is very, very important to us social animals; in Bewdley we are fortunate to have areal sense of community that fosters this. The Bridge tries to play a part in creating acommunity spirit and has monthly indications in its reports of how this community doesn’tjust happen. Many people spend a lot of time organising and running clubs and societies; lotsof us attend them. During August we often take a rest from them, but a wander through thetown soon shows that the talking goes on.

Here’s a resolution: I’m going to see how many cheery exchanges I can get in on onewalk through Bewdley. In the meantime, enjoy your Bewdley summer! Margaret

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month.

Modest GloryOne of the glories of St Anne’s Church is its coffee bar – quiet, unassuming and modest – itisn’t noisy, pushy or loud; it doesn’t run promotions, special offers and doesn’t have a rewardscheme.

Instead it offers a genuine, gentle and warm welcome to anyone who enters the building forwhatever reason – and many do: sometimes out of curiosity, wondering what the buildinglooks like from the inside. Others call in to browse the fair-trade stall, pick up a copy of TheBridge magazine, use the church photocopier, dodge the rain, snow, or sun – depending onthe time of year.

Some pop into the church itself for some quiet – and sometimes to have a cup of tea. We don’t charge for drinks – and don’t want to be in any sort of competition with our neighbouring, excellent tea and coffee parlours – we just ask for a donation to cover costs.

It is made possible through the kindness of volunteers who give their time. If you feel thatyou could help by being part of this group then we’d love to hear from you. The only qualifications you need are human warmth and friendliness. Contact Cate Gillespie on01299 402151, who co-ordinates our volunteers, for further information.

Desperately Seeking ... Aunty FloMy uncle, Harold Page, married Florence Danby in 1944. Theylived at 38 Welch Gate. Sadly, Harold left her for anotherwoman, by whom he had two daughters. I have recently metthese cousins and what we'd all like to know is:

"What happened to Flo?"She carried on living in Bewdley and in 1968 married HenrySamuel Williams of 27 Severn Side South Bewdley and may evenhave married again. Surely someone in our town remembers her!

Flo, born in 1920, was the youngest of 9 children:Cecil (1897) married Florence Lewis and had DonaldElsie (1899) married Harold Chadbourne and had Robert and MargaretSamuel (1901) married Amy Jackson and had DoreenStanley (Alfred) Baldwin (1904) never marriedWilfred (1906) married Elise Price and had Patricia and MauriceDorothy (1910) married Leslie SaundersCharles Harold (1914)George (1916)

Flo also had at least 8 Danby cousins! As you can tell, I've done quite a bit of work on theDanbys, so even if you aren't related to Flo, you may be interested in your Danby ancestors.

Please get in touch if you remember Flo. My phone number is 400691.

Gardening for AugustFor most people August is holiday time, gardens are leftto fend for themselves or perhaps the neighbours willdrop by and do a bit of watering. By this time of yearthe main work is done, the first flush of summer is pastand Autumn is yet to arrive, so you could just sit backand relax, harvest some of the crops, dig potatoes, watchthe lawn grow or take advantage of slack time to getahead. Seeds can be collected into brown paper bags

and stored for next year in a cool dry place; deadhead plants that still flower to encouragemore. Cuttings can be taken from many shrubs and started off in pots with a little rootingpowder. Borders can be tidied and where there is a lack of colour a few remaining beddingplants popped into the gaps or alternatively early autumnal varieties. Lawns can still be fed, leaving the cuttings on top will help to retain some moisture in the ground, another month to go before scarification; don’t cut the grass too short as this will encourage more growth.Keep baskets, tubs and pots in good order with a little foliar feed in their water.

Compost bins will still be working, so make sure their contents are regularily turned and thatthere is sufficient water to accelerate the process of rotting down. And finally, when all isdone you can consult next year’s bulb catalogues and plan for the spring displays.

Tails of a Veterinary Practice– life at Riverside Vets as seenby Gavin the practice cat

Hi all,

I hope this month finds you well and that, like me, you have been able to find some occasional patches of sun in which to have anice snooze.

It has been another exciting month at thesurgery. Jayne (my human who is a VeterinaryNursing Auxiliary) has been telling me aboutheading off to France for the world 2CV rally.Apparently a 2CV (also known as a deuxchevaux) is one of those noisy things thattravel on 4 wheels that humans call a car.Jayne says it is a classic and the best of all thecars. Personally, I think all cars are bestavoided by self respecting felines wheneverpossible.

I have also been spending some time observing the goings on on the river. Therehave been a gaggle of geese looking veryproud swimming about with a little gosling. They seem to form a protective circlearound it when they swim. My humans haveall been heard cooing and saying how cute itis. I think I am much better looking thoughand they should cuddle me instead.

More from me again next month,

Gavin

VIEW FROM THE REDTHORNEThe clearing of one of Bewdley’s ancient strip gardens adjacent toThe Redthorne has cost a number of trees their lives. I won’t gointo that now, as it’s a matter I’ve written about elsewhere, but it hasexposed a structure I had not previously noticed – the chimney ofthe old foundry. A fascinating addition to the museum, the foundry isa symbol of a Bewdley long-gone and the chimney hints at a past thatwas not always quite as rosy as some might paint it. Up until the

1960s, this unusual skyward finger of brick and iron strapping belched black smoke for muchof the day and it continued to do so, in a more restricted sense and with a few breaks, untilthe 1990s.

Some fifty feet away from it, where the main thoroughfare of the museum now runs, was theshambles – butcheries built when wealth and decorum moved Bewdley’s slaughtering industry off Load Street. There, thousands of cattle, pigs and sheep ended their days; the gutters channelling gallons of blood and guts towards the river.

On the far side of the gardens, with its frontage onto the river and its waste flowing into it,was the tannery, a place where hides from the butcheries were soaked in lime, urine and birdfaeces to make them fat-free and supple. And upstream, on Dog Lane, was a huge bottle kiln, firing pottery. Just outside the town on Dowles Brook, was a sulphuric acid works and onthe Wribbenhall side of the bridge, a chocolate factory and, of course, several of the pubsbrewed their own ale, including the Mug House.

There, and at the numerous other taverns in the town, would stay dozens of bowhauliers andworkmen, who earned their living hauling the 40 plus trows based at Bewdley against the fastflow of the Severn. There, too, drank the hundreds of impoverished children, adults and elderly who worked in the saddlers, shoe-makers, horn-workers, pewterers, farriers, charcoal-burners and warehouses. Then, having drunk their fill and more, they crammed eachnight into Bewdley’s crumbling hovels, such as those now prettily-converted cottage in the alleys off the High Street.

Heavens! Bewdley must have STUNK!

Community News

At the end of June some changes in thestructure of Local Policing across NorthWorcestershire took effect. The number ofpolice officers on local policing teams dedicated to policing specific areas such asBewdley and its surrounding rural parisheshas been reduced significantly. As a directconsequence of these reductions, the post of Local Policing Sergeant at Bewdley hasceased to exist.

The revised structure of Bewdley & RuralLocal Policing Team now consists of PC SteveYapp, who will be your principal point ofcontact, ably assisted by CSO’s Jeni Bray andNicky Turvey and a small but dedicated bandof Specials. They will be supervised by Sgt.Jan Shore, who takes on responsibility for Bewdley in addition to her diminished compliment of officers at Stourport.

Most of the officers leaving Local Policinghave transferred onto five response teamsproviding 24/7 cover from Kidderminster. One of those teams is on duty at any giventime, except for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights when shift overlaps meanthat two are on duty. Those overlaps shouldprovide sufficient resilience for officers topatrol Bewdley town centre on Friday andSaturday evenings, when alcohol and drug induced antisocial behaviour is most prevalent. One officer from each team willhave specific responsibility for investigatingcrimes in Bewdley, and should, when opportunity permits, work out of Bewdleypolice station. The reality, however, is that resources are directed to where demand isgreatest, and operational flexibility is required rather than a focus on specific

areas. The demand on police resources istwelve times greater in Kidderminster than itis in Bewdley, and in Stourport it is two and ahalf to three times greater. Like blades ofgrass, we must bend in the direction of theprevailing wind.

The impact of these changes will affect someparts of the community more than others. Ifyou are the victim of crime, or involved in anaccident or need urgent police assistance, then nothing has changed. However, our capacity to support community organisationsand events, deal with social issues, carry outpreventative work to reduce crime, and perform the many other functions associatedwith community policing has been severelyaffected. Our small team has enjoyed a certain level of success, with overall crimelevels in Bewdley falling for two successiveyears, and in the quarter ending June reducing by 28% compared to the same period last year. Over that same period, crime in Kidderminster has increased by10.9%. It would be reassuring if we wereable to believe that the increase could be addressed without detriment to Bewdley.

My five years spent at Bewdley have beensome of the most enjoyable of my service. Isincerely thank the many people in the townand parishes who have worked with us toour mutual gain. I will still be contactable forsome time yet to support and assist howeverI can. As the functions performed by manypublic services as well as the police enter aperiod of contraction and uncertainty, I wishyou all good luck and best wishes for the future.

Police Sergeant Chris AimesKidderminster East Local Policing Team

ROCKPATHFINDERS

A Cuckoo Surprise!Don’t be surprised if you hear the call of the cuckooin Bewdley Museum this August. You do not have toworry – The Friends of Bewdley Museum have notkept one captive – but the exhibition in the WyreForest Gallery owes its inspiration to the mysteriousbird. Did you know that it was in a quiet corner ofWorcestershire called Pound Green Common that asometime Midlands Industrialist finally lay proof toone of the longest running mysteries surroundingthe unique lifestyle of one of the most recognised but

rarely seen birds of the world?

What do cuckoos, the White House, the Great Exhibition and Lighthouses have in common? How do they connect with Pound Green Common? On Friday 12th August the “CuckooChance – The Secret Life of the Cuckoo” exhibition will be opened by BBC Bristol’s naturalist Brett Westwood. This is a Private View, before it opens to the Public from Saturday12th August to 25th September, which is for members of the Friends of Bewdley Museum. The sound of the cuckoo will be heard as the Friends re-establish local folklore. It was saidthat when the cuckoo is first heard ”men must down tools and retire to a local hostelry todrink ale!” Bewdley Brewery is supplying bottles of “Cuckoo Ale” and The Friends will toastthe opening with local beer and apple juice. To make sure you do not miss out why not joinThe Friends of Bewdley Museum and perhaps help with the planning of one of the exhibitions. Recent topics have been Tickenhill Palace, the pubs of Bewdley, the Arley Ferryand now Cuckoos!

There will also be the results of the local survey of cuckoo calls that many of you helpedwith. So please make sure that you do pop in, perhaps whilst on your way to the Sunday afternoon Music in the Gardens, which run from Sunday July 31st to Sunday August 28th 2-4pm.

There is a lot to do, see and hear in the museum this August.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4th JULY 2011

20mph Speed LimitsAt its April meeting the Town Council had resolved to lobby the County Council for theintroduction of a 20 mph speed limit in Bewdley town centre plus across the bridge intoWribbenhall to include Stourport Road outside the schools. However, there was somedoubt as to whether that would be supported by the Police or by the Highway Authority.Reference was made to the fact such lower limits were in operation in both Worcestershireand further afield. Councillors decided to invite the Chairman of the Police Authority tomeet with them to make representations direct to her as to the desirability of such ascheme going ahead.

Policing in BewdleyCouncillors again considered the changes that were in the process of being made to thelevels of policing in Bewdley/Wribbenhall by uniformed patrols. This had arisen from theredeployment of the highly respected Sergeant Chris Aimes to Kidderminster with no directreplacement being allocated specifically to Bewdley. There was strong feeling that for a townof our size a greater presence was required than the remaining Police Constable andCommunity Support Officers could provide and that relying more on response vehicles fromKidderminster was inadequate. Councillors agreed to take up on offer to meet with Policechiefs to express their overall concerns.

Bewdley Development TrustThe Development Trust had been promised a grant from Advantage West Midlands of£805,000 towards the costs of refurbishment of St George‘s Hall, which everyone agreedwas in a poor condition and needed renovation with more modern facilities. However therewas a funding gap of £10,000 primarily to pay for professional fees in setting up a newcharitable company, which would then take a lease and run the Hall in the future for thecommunity. Without that funding there was a risk that the £805,000 would be lost and theproject not proceed with it being many years before any alternative funding might beavailable. Though there were strong arguments for and against making the grant, the Councilagreed that such should be made to ensure the work could go ahead.

There is a story about Bewdley that deserves to be more widely known: Victorian artist, art critic, and social commentator John Ruskin had planned to bring his collection of paintings, artefacts, books and minerals to Bewdley and hadgone so far as to commission plans for abuilding in Ruskinland, the parcel of forestgiven to him by Mayor of Bewdley, GeorgeBaker. Although this never materialised, thesocial experiment of a small community of Ruskin-inspired families, working the landand nurturing craftsmanship and the appreciation of natural beauty, became partof our heritage, and Ruskin’s “Guild of St.George” still owns 100 acres of forest andits smallholdings. Bewdley Museum hasjoined with Sheffield Museum to exhibit apart of the John Ruskin collection until 7thAugust, and I can recommend it!

The exhibition which follows at the Museumalso expresses the link between local peopleand nature. Edgar Chance was a pioneer ofornithology and wildlife film making whosestudy of cuckoos at Pound Green solved themysteries of the bird’s life cycle. His, andtheir, story is told at the Museum from 13thAugust to 25th September.

Bewdley Floral Art Clubs Three Day Event at theRose Theatre, Kidderminster June 2011

Kaleidoscope

Our 19th year at the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster, saw yet again another spectacular showof floral skills and artistry from Andrew Lloyd and Joan Southerton. Supported by theclubs committee and members they once again entertained the audiences at the Rose forthree evenings. Andrew & Joan created fantastic displays on stage, which were greeted withmuch approval.

One of the highlights was undoubtedly the superb Irish dancing by Megan Ince, who supported Andrew’s Emerald Isle display.

We were delighted to give each of our chosen charities £500 each. They were The Mid-lands Air Ambulance, The Severn Freewheelers, Home Start, The Wyre Forest Talking News-paper and the Bewdley Youth Café. Yes, £2,500, a great total for us to achieve. Thanks toeveryone who supported us and we look forward to next year and our 20th production!

The wonderful volunteers who collect the magazines and put them through your letterbox do go on holiday occasionally, or get ill or have other reasons for missing some months. If you don’tget the magazine for several months, do contact the Manns ([email protected] or leave anote for them in St Anne’s) who will try to sort it out, or better still, persuade you to takeon a few deliveries! As St Anne’s is open most weekdays you can always go in and pick up a copy. If you wouldlike to take more, please let us know; once or twice we have run quite badly short and be-fore we take the expensive step of increasing the print run we need to know that the extracopies are going to be used regularly.

Kemp Hospice Midnight WalkWe did it! Bewdley Girlguiding members, Gill Robinson and Carol-AnnMuller-Jones completed the five milewalk in the forest in just an hour and ahalf. They set off with hundreds ofother mad women on the countdownto midnight. The only inconveniencewas avoiding the odd muddy patch onthe forest. Gill more than deserved herglass of Bucks Fizz! It was a magical experience. Followingthe trail of flashing bunny ears, as itwove through the forest path ahead waslike tracking fairies. The atmosphere was exciting and moving at the same time, as it was clear

many were walking in memory of friends and loved ones. The organisation was brilliant, es-pecially the employment of Captain Jack Sparrow to cheer the walkers on! Thanks to everyone who sponsored the event and prepare to be pestered again next year,as they have already booked their places.

Bewdley HistoricStreet Market Returns

Great news – our historic street market is coming back –and in the centre of the town in Load Street.

It will be held on the 1st Sunday of every month and startson the 7th of August. It is being organized by Bewdley De-velopment Trust and will feature stalls with both quality lo-cally grown produce as well as craft and related stalls.

“The people of Bewdley have being asking for the return of their market and we have been able to agree it with the appropriate authorities”, said Peter Miller of the Trust. “So come on everyone, let us make our market a success by supporting our local traders.”

Plans are in hand to promote the new market by having largesigns in and around the town, as well as promoting the market, both locally and further afield.

Watch out for more details in the Bridge.

Chance to Shine TournamentBewdley Cricket Club has been part of the Chance to Shine Cricket Initiative assisted by theWorcestershire Cricket Board. It is in its second year of a five year delivery plan. Chance toShine aims to bring cricket back into state schools. This year Andy Wheeler, the appointedcoach, together with members of the Bewdley Cricket Club delivered 280 hours of cricketcoaching free of charge to the Bewdley and Wolverley School Pyramids.

The year culminated with two tournaments held at Bewdley in July. It was pleasing to see sixschools entering teams at two age levels. The winners of the Year 5/6 tournament were Cook-ley Sebright Primary School while Far Forest Lea Memorial Cof E Primary School led the wayin the Year 3/4 tournament.

Pictured are the winners of the primary school tournaments with their trophies.
