June 29th marks the return of a traditionalNebraska Region rally, Bug Squasher.

The BUG SQUASHER is coming!

On June 29 the Nebraska Region will return to theTSD (time-speed-distance) rally days of theseventies and eighties with the Bug Squasher Rally.This is an SCCA Touring Rally which means thereare no traps, no convoluted logic, no complicatedinstructions. The directions are designed to keepyou from getting lost. The mileage is given at everycourse following instruction to further reduce thechances of getting lost. This event is designed tobe an introduction for novices to TSD rallying whileproviding a refresher for more experienced teams.

The rally will begin and end at Clancy’s Pub (777N. 114th St). Registration is from noon to 12:30.First car off at 1:00. You’ll need a workingodometer and an accurate timepiece. The route isabout 80 miles long through the countrysidesouthwest of Omaha using both paved and goodquality unpaved roads. There are some fun to driveroads (Remember, this is Nebraska. Sometimes theroads just go straight!) and there is some nicescenery for the navigators.

Mirrorkhana, for those of youwho aren’t familiar with theevent, is where people racepeople, not clocks. It is a doubleelimination event that has beenheld for 30 years in Salina,Kansas. Mirrorkhana is a uniquecourse with two parallel startinglines where one car starts bygoing north and one starts bygoing south. Whoever gets back to their starting linefirst, wins.

In 1990, Nebraska Region was 27 strong at the event.The event was plagued (as some events seem to be)with mechanical issues. E.J. Poss had issues with notonly his Pantera (turned out to be a fuse) and also histow vehicle. I don’t remember what the issues werewith other drivers l ike Mark Walker and DaveZitzlsperger, and no doubt a few others who hadproblems, but I remember clearly the problem with DonKnop’s Shelby.

Don went out on his first round in the preliminariesSunday morning and the next thing we knew he wasstopped on the course, out of the car, and on his handsand knees peering under the front end. There had beena loud *SNAP!* and it turned out that a lower controlarm and motor mount bracket had broken. At least adozen people went running out onto the course to hisaid. Then someone ran back to get a wheeled jack, putit under the left front, and the group slowly pushed theShelby off the course and back to the pits. It lookedmore like they were an honor guard escorting a fallenfriend rather than just some friends pushing a brokencar.

If Don had taken the next (90 degree) corner, the wheelmight have buckled under, and that beautiful car mighthave landed on it’s shiny black nose. The look on Don’sface as the procession entered the pits was more like aparent looking at his child ... a child with a broken arm.There was surely no way to fix it in time to go on runningand he had obviously lost the first round already.(Remember this is a double elimination event.)

Rocky Entriken (the event master) got on the P.A. andtold Don to grab another car and motor on. I walkedover to Don and held out the keys to my Mustang whichwas in the same class as his car (although I would havetold you it didn’t have nearly the class that the Shelby

had when it was just sitting still).

I wasn’t the only person with keys in my hand, butafter a lot of contemplating of all the options he had,to my surprise, Don picked my car to finish his runs.

Keep in mind that Don had driven my car twice beforeduring the previous year - once in a fun run and onceat a Solo school and that time only in the slalomsection. The difference in his Shelby and my Mustangwere as different as their colors - black and white. Heeven had to borrow numbers to use since his whitenumbers didn’t show on my white car. There were 23years of technological difference in the two cars, notto mention that his Shelby was a coupe and a stick,while my Mustang was a convertible and an automatic.

That didn’t stop Don. He managed three quick wins inmy car to finish the preliminaries and qualify for thefinals. I will say it every time someone says thatsomeone else has a better car than they have. It’sNOT the car, folks. It’s the driver!

Once the preliminaries were over there was time beforethe finals to worry about the Shelby. Maybe therewas time to fix it? They loaded it into BobWoodhouse’s trailer and took it to a Salina Regionmember’s shop where they thought maybe they coulddo something. Sadly, this wasn’t the movies. Whenthe car came back under its own power, we all hopedfor the best but it had been spot welded good enoughto limp it home, not fit enough to let it run the event.

So, Don went into the finals in my car. First, he beatMark Alft. Not an easy thing to do. Next, JohnLaRandeau went up against Dana Moore (both inCamaros) and it was so close, a lot of us thought maybethe final would be John versus Don. Dana won. ThenDon ran against Dana, and I feel obligated here to pointout that if Don had been smart, he would haveborrowed Dana’s car instead of mine. Don won. Thefinal was Don Knop versus Rob Pickrell, and ... It wasnot to be.

At Mirrorkhana it is people versus people, not peopleversus clocks. But at Mirrorkhana XVI in 1990, therewasn’t a person there that didn’t cheer themselveshoarse or somehow help Don with his movie-worthyfairy tale ride to an “almost” victory. Second in a 14car class is not a bad finish. It couldn’t have happenedwithout someone to loan him a car to drive, someoneto loan him numbers, someone to loan him a wheeledjack, someone to loan him a trailer, and someone toloan him his shop, along with his welding skills, and allof the Nebraska Region entrants to cheer him on!

John LaRandeau and I saw that Don limped safely home.Almost 25 years later, I’m delighted to see thatoccasionally Don still brings that proud black beautyout to events.

Mount St. Helens day wasthe occasion for the thirdNebraska RegionRallyCross points event ofthe year. Twenty-twodrivers, many new toRallyCross, chewed up the

turf with eight runs each on a beautiful spring day at I-80 Speedway in Greenville. Steve Ducharme served ascourse designer and event chair, aided by Kris Martison.The event ran smoothly due in large part to our ableand dedicated volunteers — safety stewards JerryDoctor and Shana Hogan, registration chief Matt Cox,timing chief Candy Gerber, and corner worker ChuckGarcia. Class winners included Victor Dixon in preparedfront, Dan Beirle in modified front, and Matt Einarssonin prepared rear with his C4 Corvette. Kris took themodified rear trophy in the Cosseboom 325is, over TonyKoester in that delightful Datsun 510. (For you youngerreaders, a Datsun is a bygone Nissan, not a wiener dog.)In the stock front-wheel drive class, “Smooth Jim” Woodin the Specialty Auto Civic Si beat Greg Cheney in hisFiesta ST. The all-wheel drive classes were eachcontested by Subarus. Mark Macoubrie led the preparedclass in an STi, ahead of Colin Brandt and Chris VanMiddelkoop in 2.5s. Modified class drivers Brandon Suggsin a WRX and Damian Overman in a 2.5 RS were outrunby Lawrence Duty, who asserts that yes, this really is(was?) an Impreza. (See Jerry Doctor’s photos to findout why someone might question this.) Four driverscompeted in stock all with Alexander Hrdy in a Legacyand John Langholz in a WRX behind a hard-fought duelthat ended with Mark Hill’s STi just over a second behindclass winner Jan Gerber. Rear-wheel drive classes areparticularly popular in Nebraska Rallycross, as wasevident from the fierce competition in the stock class.Pedro Buenrostro took a commanding lead during themorning runs in his Miata, ahead of Nick Harper andRoman Woolery in a Mustang and Doug Liebman in hisNissan 300 ZX. But Pedro had to work hard to maintainhis lead during the afternoon session as the other driversclosed in. The times for the final run spanned less thanone second, with Roman Woolery’s Mustang fastest byonly 26/1000ths over co-driver Nick Harper. When thedust settled, however, Pedro remained victorious,bringing another eventful Sunday drive to a close.

We also got a look at site improvements, leveling andgrading, that nearly double the usable site area. This ispart of the joint effort by the I-80 Speedway owners,

Secretary’s Report: April Walter presented last month’smeeting minutes. Report approved.

Treasurer’s Report: John LaRandeau presentedTreasurer’s Report. Offered to present any additionalinformation requested. Report approved. Motion byCandy Gerber to approve the tax return. 2nd by PattBuell. All in favor. John will submit tax return.Membership Report: Julie Heaton presented membershipreport. 9 new members and 23 people signed up forthe Starting Line School, 14 of which are new members.

Solo Report: First solo went well. Approx 86 entrants.The heats were based on who had already server theirworker assignments with setup, etc. and assigning therest of the available workers evenly across the heats.This seemed to work well, so looking to keep thesesame heats all year and just rotate their order.JerryDoctor brought up that the l ist of weekendmemberships given to him to assist with Points wasinaccurate, so he wants to make sure that the weekendmemberships are being submitted properly. Discussionon fun event solo to be held in Hastings.

RallyCross Report: The site has been graded, but notpacked or seeded. The light post is being removed sothe available area will be almost doubling in size.

Road Rally Report: Jerry Doctor reported that he isworking on the rally for late June. Planning to meetcriteria so that it qualifies for points for National RallyCompetition.

Exhaust Notes Report: Patt Buell reported that thenotes are in the mail. Coming up with a press releaseformat for important information.

Social Report: Check Garcia reports World of Wheelswent well for recruiting, etc. Few people from theredid show up at the solo.

Club Racing Report: Working with DMVR on races. I80challenge to be run for the races this year for the bonusraces.
