Bulgarian was the first Slavic language attested in writing.

The development of the Bulgarian language may be divided into several periods:

Prehistoric period (until 9 century)

It occurred between the Slavonic migration to eastern Balkans and the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia in the 860s.

Old Bulgarian (9th to 12th century)

The beginning of the Old Bulgarian language is placed with the creation

(862 or 863) of the alphabet (Glagolitic, also known as Glagolitsa) by Saints

Cyril and Methodius.

Old Bulgarian (9th to 12th century)

In the late 9th century another Bulgarian alphabet was established - the Cyrillic alphabet. The Old Bulgarian language is the basis for the establishment of Russian, Serbian, Slovenian and Croatian alphabets.

Middle Bulgarian (12th to 15th century)

It is a literary norm that evolved from the earlier Old Bulgarian. It was a language of rich literary activity and the official administration language of the Second Bulgarian Empire.
