National 4-H Week October 5-11 has been set as National 4-H Week! This event is designed to promote and celebrate 4-H throughout the country. It reminds us to pledge our heads to clearer thinking, our hearts to greater loyalty, our hands to larger service and our health to better living for our club, our community, our country and our world. Celebrate the uncommon commitment of 4-H’ers during National 4-H Week and recognize the confidence, passion and practical skills that prepare them to step up to the challenges of our complex, changing world. Louisiana Art and Folk Festival The 59 th annual Louisiana Art and Folk Festival will be held on Saturday, October 11 in downtown Columbia. Make plans to visit the 4-H mini-farm and the Children’s Tent located on the Riverwalk. Members of the Junior Leader Club will be assisting with activities in the children’s area. Area Leader Forum The Northeast Region Area Leader Forum was held on September 24 at the Rayville Civic Center. Leaders Patricia Russell, Charlotte Michaud, Denise Kelly, Katie Hillestad, Hannah Springer along with agents Jana Bennett and Jim McCann represented Caldwell Parish. This year’s meeting was a celebration of the 100 th birthday of the Cooperative Extension Service in Louisiana. Participants attended professional development sessions focusing on science, wetlands and club meetings. Junior Leader Club The Junior Leader Club is an afterschool project club for members in grades 7-12. Junior Leaders are active with service learning projects, assist with 4-H events, serve as camp counselors and have of fun! Enrollment is open. If you missed the first meeting last month, you can still join. Club dues are $20 for an individual membership or $35 for a family membership (2 members) and includes a 4-H t-shirt. The next meeting will be held from 4:15-5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8 at the Prekindergarten Center. We will be recruiting volunteers to work the Children’s Tent at the Art and Folk Festival. Outdoor Skills Club The Outdoor Skills Club focuses on the different disciplines in the 4-H Shooting Sports program including Rifle, Shotgun and Archery. The Shooting Sports program strives to teach 4-H’ers safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment including sound decision making, self-discipline and concentration and promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior. If you are a 4-H member and are interested in the Outdoor Skills Club, please call our office at (318) 649-2663 and leave your name, mailing address, telephone number, school and grade. We are planning to have an Outdoor Skills Club meeting at a later date and need to compile a list of members who would like to participate in this club. If you are a parent or adult who is interested in volunteering some of your time to help with this club or would be interested in training to become a Certified Instructor for one of the Shooting Sports disciplines, please contact Jana Bennett or Jim McCann at 649-2663. National 4-H Week October 5-11 has been set as National 4-H Week! This event is designed to

Consumer Foods Judging Contest by Wednesday, November 5. Dish categories are Quick-N-Easy Ground Beef, Heart

Healthy Ground Beef, Chicken, Egg, Rice Main Dish, Rice Any Other, Pecan and Sweet Potato. Dishes that won first place

in last year’s contest (Nov. 2013) cannot be entered in this year’s contest. All dishes must be chilled (cold to the touch)

and transported in an insulated ice chest with ice. No insulated totes or bags will be allowed. Dishes not properly chilled

or transported will be disqualified. Serving dish size can be no larger than 11x16 or 12-inch round. Recipes used should

not serve more than 12 servings. Recipes should be submitted on the recipe form available at the 4-H office or from the

Caldwell 4-H website. Bring two copies of your recipe to the contest.

Members who do not want to enter a dish can still participate in this event by entering the Consumer Foods Judging

Contest. Participants will rank classes of food items from restaurants, grocery stores and/or vending machines based on

factors such as health, money, lifestyle or other requirements in the given situation and give written reasons.

4-H Fashion Revue Handmade garments, shirts and data forms for the 2015 4-H Fashion Revue are due to the 4-H office on Wednesday,

December 3. Appearance Judging is scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2015 at Grayson Elementary. The 4-H Fashion

Revue consists of the Clothing Construction, Decorated Shirt, Ready-to-Wear and Consumer Decision Making contests.

Remember to submit a data form if you are planning to enter the Ready-to-Wear contest.

Photography Contest Entries for the 4-H Photography Contest are due to the 4-H office by Friday, December 19. Contest categories are A Story

or Series; People, Structures or Buildings; Plants or Animals. Photos must have been taken by the 4-H club member

during the 2014 calendar year. Each category consists of 5-6 photos equally spaced on a 22”x 28” sheet of poster paper.

Write a short caption under each photo. Include your name, school, grade and category on the back of the poster in the

upper left hand corner. 4-H’ers may enter 1-3 categories. Entries will be judged on appropriateness of photos, clarity of

photos (able to see picture clearly) and neatness of work. Cash awards will be given for first, second and third place

winners in each category.

Don’t deceive, cheat or steal.
