CommunityNews 2ARIZONA ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS' STATEMENT ON
U.S. DISTRICT COURT JUDGE SUSAN BOLTON'S RULING ON SB 1070July 28, 2010
We, the Roman Catholic Bishops in Arizona, commend Judge Susan Bolton for enjoining some of
the more problematic provisions of SB 1070.We hope that reaction to her ruling will be expressed only in peaceful and legal ways.
As Bishops in our respective dioceses, we know that in practically every parish there are familiesthat have been living with the fear and anxiety generated by SB 1070 that they might be torn apart. The situation of these families might be that one parent is a citizen and that the other is not in ourcountry legally. Or, the situation might be that some children in the family are citizens and that abrother or sister is not here legally.
Our hearts go out to these families. We know them to be good people who work hard and whocontribute to the economy and to the quality of life of their communities.
We will continue our advocacy against the provisions of SB 1070 and will monitor theimplementation of the provisions allowed by the ruling.
We will continue to advocate for comprehensive reform of our nation's immigration laws.
Our advocacy is predicated on our beliefs that: Illegal immigration is bad for our nation. It is not good for us to not know who is entering our
country.
Our international borders need to be secured and we need to be protected from drug smuggling, weapons smuggling, human trafficking and violence.
There must be a process - but not amnesty - for persons who have entered our country illegally
to pursue legal status. This process must have proportionate consequences for the act of illegalentry, consequences that would include fines, learning English, and going to the "back of theline" to seek citizenship.
Our nation needs a program that would allow needed workers to enter the country legally. Thisprogram must include protection of workers rights.
The tragic consequences of the failure of our nation's political leadership to enact reform of ourimmigration system have included the deaths of thousands of people
Migrants - women, men, children in desperate circumstances - have died trying to enter ourcountry. U.S. citizens have died because of crimes committed by drug smugglers, people smugglers
and weapons smugglers.
We pray for those who have died and for their grieving families.
And we pray that our senators and representatives will put aside their partisan divisions and go towork immediately to fix the broken immigration system.

Faith in Action 4A Message from the Director:About 10 days ago we celebrated the Feast ofSt. Care. Clare was a strong woman inspiredby Francis to follow Jesus gospel ofembracing poverty and having totaldependence on God. The following is a
reflection on Clare from the Franciscan Action Network:For those of us engaged in the work of integral socialtransformation through FAN, Clare, the True Mirror, offers many insights. I would highlight just one forreflection as we celebrate her feast now in 2010.In her Second Letter to Agnes of Prague, another Franciscanwoman who courageously took charge of her own life byrefusing to be a pawn in a game of arranged marriagesand high royalty, Clare encouraged her:
What you hold, may you always hold. What you do, may you always do andnever abandon. But with swift pace, lightstep, and unswerving feet, so that evenyour steps stir up no dust, go forwardsecurely, joyfully, and swiftly, on the pathof prudent happiness, believing nothing, agreeing with nothing which woulddissuade you from this resolution or whichwould place a stumbling block for you onthe way, so that you may offer your vows
to the Most High in the pursuit of that perfection towhich the Spirit of the Lord has called you. That advice can also come to rest upon all of us engagedin FAN's ongoing work as blessing and challenge:
May we hold firmly to the conviction that Franciscanvalues of reconciliation and peacemaking are needed inour social and political discourse.
May we never abandon our compassionate solidaritywith poor persons and endangered creation.
May our feet always walk lightly but unswervingly incarrying a prophetic message to places where the needs ofthe unemployed, the immigrant, the tortured person, andthe unborn need to be heard.
May we find a prudent happiness in the sometimesthankless work of standing for justice on behalf of thosewith no financial influence and almost no options.
May we respond completely to the work God hascalled us, knowing that finding civil discourse andcommon ground must go hand-in-hand with a concretecommitment to the "least of our brothers and sisters,"that is, to Christ himself.Clare's persistence as she confronted those who mighthave sought to co-opt, belittle, or mitigate her work, orthe work of her sisters, is a trait that "clearly" shinesthrough those mists of history. As we celebrate thiscourageous woman, may we see in her a beacon for ourown work for policies and practices of justice.

of working on events for World PEACE Day. We arepartnering with the AZ Department of Peace Cam-paign to create ideas and activities that will help allcelebrate this wonderful PEACE Day. Please mark iton your calendar!!The History of Peace Day: The original UN Interna-tional Day of Peace was created by Costa Rica in1981, however the date of the Daymoved from year to year and no onewas being asked to stop fighting. InSept-ember, 2001, Jeremy Gilley anda group of friends achieved the firststage of their goal at the UN General
Assembly by giving the InternationalDay of Peace a fixed date and mak-ing it a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.Jeremys idea had been accepted by all the coun-tries that made up the UN (189 at the time). Theyadopted a Resolution, a document that asks everyindividual on earth to observe and commemorateone day of PEACE every year. The date chosen:September 21Please join with us on that date tocommemorate Peace Day. More details to follow.Questions? Call Bonnie 480-948-7460, ext. 155 oremail: [email protected]

The Casa de Paz y Bien8
The Casa Rosary ExperiencePeople have asked me, How can one take the repetitive words of the Rosary and bring then to life?I have attended many Rosary prayer sessions since I could hold a Rosary in my hand. As an adult I realized that theRosary sessions were more like a Nascar race to get through it all in 20 minutes. I continued to go, yet longed for myown private time with my Lady and my Lord so that I could allocate more time to meditate on each prayer, and eachword on my own contemplative pace. There truly is no wrong way to pray the Rosary. It can be prayed as fast or as slow as you desire, yet here at The Casawe slow it down just enough to feel it in our hearts and on our breath. We do this because we believe that these words
are filled with the holy spirit of God for they come to us directly from the Bible itself. The bible teaches us that thewords from the Our Father and the Hail Mary were first uttered by the Divine, and by the holy, and the chosen. Take forexample the origins of the following prayers:
The Our FatherThe words of The Our Father came to us by Jesus Christ when one of the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how topray, and Jesus said to them, When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for weourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us the final test. (Luke 11:1-4)
The Hail MaryThe words of The Hail Mary came to us by Arch Angel Gabriel who was sent by God to reveal to Mary that she wouldgive birth to the son of God. Gabriel said to Mary, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with thee. (Luke 1:28).
And, from Elizabeth who filled with the Holy Spirit of God cried in loud voice upon seeing Mary: Blest are youamong women and blest is the fruit of your womb. (Luke 1:41-42)
How then can we infuse more life into what is already full of life and grace from God? We can do so by taking thesewords and breathe them out of our hearts during prayer. We invite people to pray the Rosary with us, and direct orproject each Hail Mary and Our Father to a cause, to someone suffering, the sick, the lonely, our nation, our world, and/or our priests. We invite everyone to envision the envelopment of each one of your petitions and offerings with the lightof each prayer. In essence we are praying the fifty-three Hail Marys and the six Our Fathers with our breath, our hearts, and our minds in a pace that is harmonious and almost melodic.
So please consider joining our faithful Rosary group at The Casa, where we share bible based reflections of eachmystery, where you are invited to lead mysteries and decades, to share your petitions and prayers, and to honor our
Blessed Mother and our Divine Father.
Be part of the Good News! Our Rosary sessions will also be taped and aired on the valleys Radio Family Rosary 1010AM. We invite you to be present for each taping! For further information please contact Chelsea at 480-577-1817.
