Try these tips to get your children talking about their days

Ever been met with silence when you ask, “How was your day?” Your com-munication efforts with your children,

especially school-age children, may need some tweaking. Try asking concrete questions, like “Who did you sit next to at lunch?” or, “What was the most interesting thing you learned today?” If your child is struggling with sharing his or her emotions, it might be helpful to ask about other emotions you see around you. Find opportunities to get children talking about how they feel by focusing on other people: “Why do you think that girl and her dad are hugging? What made that boy on the playground mad earlier?” You may be surprised at the results! For more tips, request a copy of the VIRTUS® arti-cle “Communicating with School-Age Children” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

Respect Life Advent and Christmas Reflections 2021

As Christmas draws closer, today’s readings empha-size the theme of joy, which is not simply a happi-ness based on good circumstances, but a profound exultation of spirit based on the salvation that comes from God himself. People may think this joy is unre-alistic, but it is not. For one thing, the coming of Christ has destroyed the power of sin and death at its roots. No matter what misfortunes may still happen, or what causes of anxiety may still torment us, the fact is that we always have access to God. And He has baptized us in the Holy Spirit, as John the Bap-tizer promised (today’s Gospel). That Holy Spirit gives us total access to God, to an understanding of his word, and to the grace of salvation. Hence, no matter what is happening in our lives, we can say “Merry Christmas.”

The total salvation Christ brings, which is unfolding each day, is physical as well as spiritual. The whole universe will be transformed. All physical violence, such as abortion, will be overcome. Therefore, we rejoice now, as we embrace the Christ who has al-ready come, and as we wait in joyful hope for him to come again.

PARISH MINISTRIES

AND DIRECTORY

REJOICE The prophetic writings we hear in today’s scriptures call us to rejoice and celebrate the goodness of God. Zephani-ah, Isaiah, Saint Paul, and John the Baptist in Luke’s Gospel all follow the rich tradition of the Biblical proph-ets, a tradition that reaches full expression in Jesus. The prophets warn that human failings have truly disastrous consequences. All are summoned to repent, and to change their lives. Today we hear the Good News that God’s gracious love exceeds and overcomes all human corruption. God has not given up on us. Indeed, God keeps pursuing us, and eagerly seeks to reconcile with us. God’s initiative to set the world aright culminates with Jesus, whose coming John the Baptist announces. John’s prophetic message summons us to join in God’s reconcil-ing work, by living generously and justly in our daily lives. As we rejoice in God’s grace, we then extend the fruits of this grace to all.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a library . . . ”

Margaret Kearney was teaching fifth grade at a charter school in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of New York City. One of her favorite haunts was the Brooklyn Public Library. She would spend just about every Sunday hunt-ing through the stacks to find books to share with her stu-dents. At one point, she had racked up $170 in late fees and avoided the building for months, ashamed to show her face. But eventually, the prodigal reader returned to the library and fessed up.

Kearney tells what happened in an essay in The Christian Century [October 20, 2021]:

“I explained to the librarian that I had been borrowing books for my classroom. She erased the fines and handed me a thing of magic: a teacher library card, with which I could check out unlimited books with no overdue fees. She told me to send her an e-mail if any of my stu-dents had fees. Have them try to find the books first, she said, we want them back, if possible, but mostly, we want them to be read. I haven’t seen her in years, but when I hear the word librarian, it is her face that springs to mind . . . Charged with keeping order, she understood that at the library’s core is the chaotic, subversive logic of grace.”

For Kearney, “the kingdom of heaven is like a library. Its power has nothing to do with coercion or control. It strives toward order but does not make an idol of its own rules. What it has, it must give away. And somehow, in giving everything away, the library only becomes more itself. To live like a library! To open our doors, to hold nothing so tightly that we destroy it, to give and give and gain our souls in the giving.”

A young teacher discovers John the Baptist’s vision of the Mes-siah’s coming in the kindness and grace of her local librarian. In baptism, we take on John’s role of prophet, of “Christ bear-er,” of herald of God’s Christ who dwells among us. Like John’s proclamation at the Jordan River, we are called to be witnesses of God’s love by the love we extend to others; precur-sors of his justice by our unfailing commitment to what is right and good; reflections of the light of God’s Christ in our for-giveness, mercy and compassion.
