Social Justice Statement 2017 / 2018: ‘Everyone’s Business: Developing an inclusive and sustainable economy’.
A Prayer for Economic Justice
God of justice and compassion, whose light shines into our hearts and into our nation’s halls of power,
strengthen our faith as we acknowledge the enormity of our task: to include all in the prosperity of this land.
We pray for your spirit of generosity in challenging greed and neglect. Give us your grace to reach out to the lowest paid workers,
families subsisting on meagre incomes, people who are homeless, the dispossessed First Peoples of this land, so that we may achieve change,
inspired by the Gospel, that leads to human flourishing. We pray for your spirit of truth as we place our own economic choices before
you, reflecting on our own motives as we strive to give and to keep, to save and to spend, to invest and to speak out in ways
that honour every human being. We pray for your spirit of fierce love and determination as we seek to assist
and empower the most vulnerable, to create jobs and opportunities where they are most needed,
to build an inclusive economy that enables government and business to champion a society where justice and equity abound.
May we be instruments of your compassion as we take up the needs of the poor,
May we be instruments of your mercy as we bring truth to greed and neglect,
May we be instruments of your creative spirit as we seek to make our world anew.

Welcome to all who celebrate the Eucharist with us today, to the church communities across
our parish and a special welcome to all who happen to be visiting our Parish. A special welcome and
thank you to Fr Brian McDermott who is Presider at all masses this weekend.
Our Parish supports the endeavours our the Royal
Commission to bring healing to and justice for the victims
of abuse.
Today we stand in footsteps millennia old. May we acknowledge the Elders, families and forebears of the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri tribes of the Kulin Nations, who are
the traditional custodians of our parish land, whose cultures and customs have nurtured, and continue to nurture, this land since men and women awoke from the
great dream. We honour the presence of these ancestors who reside in the imagination of this land and whose irrepressible spirituality flow through all creation.

FAMILY MASS / CHILDREN’S LITURGY 9am Mass Next Sunday 1 October we will be running the next children’s liturgy. These masses include more family friendly content with more involvement from our younger parishioners in the prayers, readings, music etc. If you have any questions or would like to get involved and join the small group of volunteers behind this initiative please contact Maria [email protected] or, Becky (Mother of Maddock and Felix at St Columba)
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE (“PEACE DAY”) “Peace Day” is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. The 2017 U.N. Peace Day Theme was Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.
A massive thank you to Anna Griffiths who designed and organised our parish's prayer flags, and led everyone at the end of the masses to decorate them. Thanks too, to who all who came to the Ecumenical Prayer for Peace last Thursday at St. Kilda Baptist church. A wonderful event,
and we are blessed to be able to share in them.

FR JOHN’S 60TH BIRTHDAY We will be celebrating Fr John’s 60th birthday with afternoon tea on Sunday 15 October 2pm-4pm. Depending on the weather it will either be in the pergola at the back of the parish house or in the parish centre. Please come along to help us acknowledge and celebrate John’s milestone. We’d appreciate everyone bringing a plate to share.
SOCIAL JUSTICE STATEMENT 2017 / 2018 Pope Francis has called for an economic system that places men and women at the very centre – one that meets the needs of all people and is just and sustainable. He denounces economic structures that take a purely utilitarian view of human beings, treating them as mere elements of production, to be thrown away if they are not seen as useful or productive. The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement for 2017–18 is titled ‘Everyone’s Business: Developing an inclusive and sustainable economy’. The Bishops call for an economy that is founded on justice and offers dignity and inclusion to every person. The Bishops’ Statement is built around the Gospel for Social Justice Sunday, 24 September 2017. Australia has experienced a quarter of a century of continuous economic growth, but the benefits of this good fortune have not been distributed equally. In our workplaces, conditions and security of employment have been eroded, while those who are unemployed subsist on incomes well below poverty levels. Australia is experiencing a housing crisis. And our Indigenous brothers and sisters struggle with economic and social burdens that most Australians cannot imagine. In the light of these challenges, the Statement calls us to build an economy founded on true solidarity with those who are most vulnerable. CLOTHES FOR THOSE IN NEED If you have clothes you’d like to donate or give to the Mission Op Shop’s please contact the Mission on 9536 8437 as the Op Shop has a pick up service. Please don’t leave in the church as the bags are often heavy and hard for us to transport. Thank you.
SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY A small group of parishioners regularly meets to share & reflect on the meaning of the Gospel in their lives and the life of the Parish and wider community. The next meeting is THIS Monday 25 September, 7.30pm in the Parish House. Anyone is welcome to come along to a gathering, & can contact Helen Freris on 0409701076 or Maria.

NOTE FROM MARIA Dear friends, I just want to let you all know of my intention to finish up here at Sacred Heart and St. Columba Parish at the end of the year. It is my 10th year here, and I've loved it all, have made many good friends, and have appreciated your support and kindness to me over all that time. Denis and I intend to shift from the house at the end of January, and after that I'll be taking long service leave, with my resignation taking effect at the end of that time - the end of April. This parish is a very special place, and so diverse in its ministry and outreach. It's unlike any parish I've ever worked in before, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute, to learn and grow, and for all the support I've had from the teams, the parishioners, and school community over that time. I'm not going anywhere else, just taking some time for myself, and my family. I'll work with you all to ensure things go on smoothly after I leave. Thank you all.
FAITH AND ENVIRONMENT Love Our Streets - Elwood. Spring has sprung so come along to help spring-clean our neighbourhood. Just an hour of your time will make a difference. Saturday 7 October 9.30am-10.30am, meet at the corner of Ormond Rd & Beach Ave. Bring bags for rubbish and recyclables. Wear clothing and sun protection to suit weather. Wear sturdy gloves. Children under 13 to be accompanied by adult. Join us afterwards for coffee.
MASSIVE MURRAY PADDLE Six school mums, ‘The Y-Nots’ and ‘The Mad Hungarian’, Andy the BASC Coordiantor have put together a team to undertake the 5 day, 404km paddle from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill. The mostly novice paddlers have been training down at Patterson Lakes with some very early starts of 5.30am or 6am. The team are raising money for our school library and have raised $1200 so far. SPIRITUALITY IN THE PUB ‘The Royal Commission: Being Catholic in Public after all that has gone on.’ Wednesday 11 October, 8pm. The Pumphouse Hotel, 128 Nicholson St, Fitzroy. Fr Frank Brennan SJ, AO is an eminent advocate for justice on many fronts, including for reform of many aspects of practice within the Catholic Church. He will speak on the effect on the Catholic faithful at large - those who remain in the Church in the face of the shame and the sense of betrayal that rest with them.
BUILDING A HEALTHIER CHURCH YTU is hosting an evening conversation on Building a healthier Church: Where to from here? What are the Challenges that are coming from the Royal Commission? CHILD SAFE ENVIRONMENT Following on from the new Victorian Reportable Conduct Scheme, we have new Incident Recording Forms. If you are concerned about an incident and/or wish to report something please speak to one of our Child Safety Team, Fr John, Christine Mitchell, Maria George, Daniella Maddalena and Jane Hearnes who are trained in how to follow the appropriate steps.
