Pastor’s

Letter

Dear Friends:

The time of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, with the Imposition of Ashes at 12 noon and 7:00 pm. The noon liturgy will be preceded with a soup and bread lunch at 11 am. On the succeeding Wednesdays we will meet at 7:00 for Holden Evening Prayer, and some outstanding preachers. The theme this year will be…

The Healing of the Nations This year as we travel together on these Lenten Wednesday evenings we will focus on healing – specifically the healing of estrangement, the healing of fear, the healing of despair, the healing of sin, and finally, the healing of the nations. Our overarching theme will be this passage from the Book of Revelation:

Then the angel showed me the river of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb…

On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit… And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

(22:1, 2)

Making Your Offering to St. Paul’s Through Stocks and Mutual Funds

Stocks and mutual funds can be an effective way to make your offering to St. Paul’s. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, considered the benchmark for the United States Stock Market, has racked up gains for the past three years to include returns close to 30% in 2013 if you include dividends! Many members of St. Paul’s already take advantage of simple method of giving appreciated securities like stock in order to meet their annual pledge or contribution. Rather than making your offering in cash, you can benefit by giving a highly appreciated stock or mutual fund worth the same amount. In doing this, you avoid the capital gains tax (the capital gains rate of 15% applies to securities held for at least 12 months, securities held less than 12 months are taxed as ordinary income) by having St. Paul’s, which is exempt from taxes, take ownership and sell the stock or mutual fund; thereby gaining the full value of the appreciated securities. Your tax deduction is still the full value of the appreciated securities without having to pay the capital gains taxes that would ordinarily be due. By utilizing the method below you can significantly reduce the net after tax cost of your gift. Consider the following example: Your 2014 annual offering to St. Paul’s is pledged at $6,000. Suppose you own a stock or mutual fund that has greatly appreciated over the past three years and has a market value of $6,000. Four years earlier you invested $500 into that stock or mutual fund. Instead of using all cash to meet your 2014 pledge or offering of $6,000, you donate/transfer the investment now valued at $6,000 to St. Paul’s. St. Paul’s then sells the investment, avoiding the capital gains that you would have paid, and puts the money into its account. Your charitable deduction for giving cash or the appreciated investment is the same as both offerings are $6,000. However, by giving the appreciated investment the capital gains tax of $825 (15% of the $5,500 gain (cost of $500 vs $6,000 market value)) is avoided. St. Paul’s still receives your $6,000 and you avoided the tax. Had you sold the stock, the $825 in taxes would be due, thus reducing your value to $5,125 requiring you to add another $825 in cash to your offering to equal your $6,000 target. ………….Continued

You can make your offering of securities, stocks or mutual funds, the same way as all other offerings to St. Paul’s. For help in taking advantage of this simple tax-avoidance strategy contact the church office, a member of the Finance Committee or a member of the Stewardship Committee. March 19 The Rev. Dr. Karl Krueger Director of the Krauth Memorial Library

Associate Professor, History of Christianity

Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia

The Healing of Fear Psalm 121 Karl Krueger’s fascination with books and the role of religion in the immigrant experience led him to study history at the University of Michigan and write a dissertation on the congregations of the Polish-speaking Lutheran Mazurians in East Prussia and the United States. He has created an online graduate course that explores the religious history, piety, and migration experience of East Europeans to the United States, and a seminar about the history of the Bible in print entitled Book of Faith: Print, Politics, Public Event. He also teaches the history of Lutherans in North America

Before coming to the Krauth Memorial Library, Dr. Krueger worked in the Rare Book Room of the University of Michigan and as Public Services Librarian at the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, a library and museum that was dedicated to American Ethnic Life and Immigration History. Dr. Krueger has attended the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and in 2007 was selected from a national pool of candidates to participate in the five week-long Reformation of the Book Seminar, in Europe, that was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has published articles in the Lutheran Quarterly, Church History, and the ATLA Proceedings.

Karl Krueger is a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has served congregations in Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada.

March 26 The Rev. Regina Goodrich Pastor, Mediator Lutheran Church

Philadelphia

The Healing of Despair Psalm 130

The Rev. Regina Goodrich’s roots stem from the Church of God in Christ, where she spent over forty years of her life. During this period she was, e.g., a Consecrated Evangelist, a workshop & seminar instructor, a revivalist, a Spiritual Counselor, and a leader of women’s and youth retreats. She also wrote the book, On the Other Side of Through—My Testimony, while working on three others.

Rev. Goodrich attended The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; Wayne University and the Merrill-Palmer Institute, both in Detroit, Michigan; and William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

In 2001, a colleague invited her to develop and lead a Bible Study group in the Lutheran Church. This experience led to her being invited to become an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America because she had something the church was looking for—passionate spirituality. She was ordained on December 20, 2008. Since then: she has preached for several congregations and revivals; she has served on the Bishop’s strategic planning/writing team, the leadership team for Youth of Color, and the Synod Council; and in 2011, she was a delegate to the Church-wide Assembly. She served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Germantown, and currently serves as the pastor of Mediator Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. Rev. Goodrich’s favorite scripture is Romans 1:16 and her life’s mission is based on Luke 4:18-20. She states that the joy of her life is ministry and advancing the Kingdom of God here on earth, so that all people might have an opportunity for a more abundant life in this world and the next. Community outreach has been the core of her existence from an early age. Through outreach and evangelism across the country, God has blessed and added to the Church such as should be saved. Evidence of this is the increase in membership of Mediator Lutheran, where many have joined and partnered with the ministry God has called them to. Rev. Goodrich says that life for her is simple and enjoyable: seeing lives transformed by and through the Grace of God given so freely.

April 2 The Rev. Sanford Groff Associate Chaplain, St. Paul’s School

Brooklandville, MD

The Healing of Sin Psalm 51 Sanford H. Groff, Jr. began attending Saint Paul’s in 1986, as a six

year-old. Throughout his entire K-12 education, Sanford cherished the consistent love and support provided by the church he called home. Sanford attended Grove City College where he earned a B.A. in Christian Thought and Philosophy. At the end of college, he realized that he needed a more global perspective. He traveled to Kenya where he lived and worked for a year as a Chaplain and Instructor of Religion at a girls’ boarding school. He then completed a Master of Divinity degree at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Sanford is currently the Associate Chaplain at St. Paul’s School, an independent Episcopal school in Brooklandville, MD. He leads the Upper School weekly chapel service, teaches tenth grade World Religions and twelfth grade Theory of Knowledge. In the spring he coaches JV tennis and over the summer he runs two service learning trips, one to the Eastern Shore of Delaware and the other to West Virginia. In January 2013, Sanford was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood at St. Paul’s School Chapel.

A “son of the congregation,” Sanford is delighted to return to Saint Paul’s Church in Ardmore to give back to the community of faith, which has time after time unconditionally given to him.

FALL 2014 HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR TWO MEXICAN YOUTHS

The chair of the Greater Philadelphia Latin American Studies Consortium and Director of Latin American Studies at Villanova needs our help. Temple University is bringing two Mexican young-adults here this fall semester (late August – mid December) to study English with scholarships. We are looking for a loving family to welcome a student into their home. Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in El Paso, Texas, sends Dr. San Juana Mendoza, M.D. across the border to Juarez, Mexico, daily. She runs a free medical clinic built on the site of a former dump. Many young Mexican volunteers are trained there to promote health in the community. Dr. Mendoza has chosen these two volunteers to study at Temple. The two students coming here are: Eric Medellin, male, age 23, and Teresa Ambrosi, female, age 21. They need sleeping accommodations and meals but not transportation, from late August to mid December 2014. Sharing your home with them would be a kind act of international friendship. To volunteer or receive more information, call (610-525-4499) or email Joe Betz([email protected]).
