Hymn-Fest at St. Paul’s on August 3

focuses on the Reformation

On Thursday evening, August 3, at 7:00 pm there will be a

Hymn-Fest led by renowned musicians David Cherwien and Mark Sedio in

St. Paul’s sanctuary. The title of the festival is The Church’s Song: Always in

Reformation. It is part of a two-day conference for church musicians

throughout the east coast sponsored by Augsburg-Fortress publishers.

The festival will include Reformation-era

hymnody, in honor of the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation. Also to be sung are hymns from later

eras titled “branching out.”

David Cherwien and Mark Sedio, festival

leaders, are well-known in the musical community.

David Cherwien is Cantor of Mt. Olive Lutheran

Church, Minneapolis. He is also the Director of the

National Lutheran Choir. He is renowned as an organ

improviser and composer of choral and organ works,

as well as his appearances as a clinician.

Mark Sedio is Cantor at Central Lutheran

Church, Minneapolis. He is also on the faculty at

Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. His special

interests are hymnody, liturgy, children’s and adult

choral music, and multi-cultural music. He has

appeared throughout the U. S. and Europe as a

recitalist, hymnfest leader and clinician.

The event is open to all, and free of charge.

Please join us for this special event.

The Chimes, the newsletter of Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, is published for the inspiration, education and entertainment of its members and friends. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Just mail, e-mail or deliver them to the church office. The next issue of The Chimes will be published on Tuesday, August 29. Your articles are due in the office no later than Tuesday, August 22. C

Pastor’s Letter Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last year in September and October, around eighty members of St. Paul’s participated in a new

venture together: small group dinners in members’ homes! These were universally enjoyed, both

as an opportunity for fellowship and a chance to discuss planning for the church in a relaxed

setting.

This year, we’re bringing the small group dinners back! By next year, maybe it will officially be a

tradition. In the coming weeks, you will receive an invitation to join in a dinner at someone’s

house. There will be many possible dates from which to choose. The catch is—you don’t who is

hosting which night!

Once we have the responses back, you will hear from your host and find out where you will be

dining. Although this might sound a little intimidating, it was one of attendees’ favorite things from

last year. It allowed everyone to mingle and get to know people they may not talk to at church.

People from different services, different ministry areas, different ages were all mixed up, and new

connections were made.

A lot of the evening is socializing, but there is also time to talk about what is going on at church:

things you’re excited about and wish to see more of, and also things that you think need some

attention or more time devoted to them. In smaller groups like this, it is often easier to share and

to listen to others. It is a great way to kick off our program year and to get important feedback

and suggestions.

Having attended one of the dinners last year, I felt blessed by the ability to make deeper

connections and by the faith and commitment present around the table. When you receive your

invitation to our dinners, I hope that you will prayerfully consider what an opportunity it might be

to attend and how your presence will be a blessing to others.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me, or our stewardship chair, Carol

Hammarberg.

Hope to see you there!

In Christ,

Pastor Laura

(If you might be interested in hosting one of the dinners, let us know!)

A Heartfelt “Thank you” I wish to thank St. Paul’s for the service and lunch where I was

honored for my twenty years’ service. It really is hard for me to believe I

have already completed 20 years, but I did arrive in the spring of 1997, so I

guess it’s real.

There are too many thankyous to count, but I could start with the

pastors I have been honored to serve under, Wilk Miller, Julie DeWerth,

Skip McDowell and Laura Tancredi. All have been supportive of our

efforts and wonderful colleagues, as have office assistants Betty Lash, Barb

Keyser, Millie Parker and Carisa Cantor. I could even mention Bill

Dougherty, of blessed memory, who took me though countless building

tours during the renovation project, Tom Ward and Dave Curry, who is

always ready to assist in a project.

When I think of our music program, I am fortunate to work with

talented singers in our children’s, youth and adult choirs. I also am aware

that these people could be doing something else on Sundays or Thursday

nights, and, in the case of our younger singers, their parents, so I am doubly

grateful. The same goes for our ringers under the direction of Gordon

Downing, and our other instrumentalists.

A special note of gratitude goes to our section leaders, Jason

Gagliardi, Shafiq Hicks [who conducted the surprise anthem!] Renée

Schulz, and Jessica Lennick, who organized a choir behind my back, even

asking singers from Main Line Reform Temple to join us. They add so

much to our program musically and personally.

Finally I wish to thank my wife Jane, who works harder around St.

Paul’s than I do, and is always showing me the latest piece of music to add

to the Lessons and Carols service.

Thank you, St. Paul’s congregation, for allowing me to minister with

you these past twenty years. May God bless us together in our mutual

endeavor.
