Pastor’s

Letter

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels

without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2

Dear Friends:

There is an interesting word in Swahili: the word mgeni. I always think of the above words from the Book of Hebrews when I think of the word mgeni. When I was taking Swahili at Bryn Mawr College, I remember being puzzled when I was doing my homework one night because mgeni can be translated as “foreigner,” “stranger,” “visitor,” and “guest.” How could one word be used for both stranger and guest? So I asked my professor at our next class. She explained that in Swahili there really isn’t a word for foreigner or stranger, because in that culture no one is ever a stranger or foreigner, but always mgeni: visitor or guest. She went on to explain that in most Tanzanian villages and small towns, all of the young people call all of the adults Mom and Dad; and that one always refers to a person of similar age as “My Brother” or “My Sister.” In this African culture, whether you’re from a neighboring village or from another continent, you are always greeted as mgeni: guest or visitor. Moreover, the greeting quickly changes from mgeni to rafiki—“friend.” What a wonderful image of the ministry of hospitality for the church. There are no strangers or foreigners, just visitors and guests who quickly become friends! “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” These words recall that day at the Oaks of Mamre when Abraham and Sarah were sitting by their tent and three strangers happened along. The couple offered them shade, water, and a full meal. It ended up that one of the strangers was truly an angel- a messenger of God- who brought them the message that they would have a son by the following spring.

Join Us

in Sunday School

Children and youth, age 3 through 8th grades, are invited to attend Sunday School at 9 am beginning Sunday, September 20.

Bring your children, age 4 – 6th grade to the Fellowship Hall where we gather together at the beginning of each Sunday school session to pray and sing before going to classes. Three year-olds go directly to their classroom on the lower level, and 7th – 8th graders meet in the Kugler Room. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning about God’s love for us through Bible study, games, crafts and more.

We will continue the First Sunday celebrations (the first Sunday of each month) with family worship at 9:00, in a service designed with children in mind. Sunday school Superintendents: Melissa Krissinger (610-649-9993) [email protected] Mary Lynn Kennedy (610-566-0213)[email protected]

Music Ministry at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has an active music ministry featuring four singing choirs and a handbell choir. We are blessed with wonderful acoustics and backed by a splendid pipe organ. Our worship is liturgical but not overly formal, and we use the Evangelical Lutheran Worship Hymnal of the ELCA as our primary worship resource.

Children’s Choir: Elementary school age children, beginning in first grade [kindergarten is possible if the parent and child think he or she is ready] are invited to sing in this group. The choir meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:25, and usually sings on the first Sunday of the month in the early service, and in special services throughout the year. The children’s choir will begin rehearsing this year on Thursday, September 17.

Youth Choir: Older children and youth from middle school and high school make up this group. The youth choir meets two Sundays a month, 7:00-8:00 pm, and sings usually once a month and at special services. Contact Andy for the Youth choir schedule. The first Youth Choir rehearsal will be September 20. Adult Choir: The adult choir rehearses every Thursday from 7:30-9:00 pm, and sings in the late service most Sunday mornings (the early service once a month). They are backed by a professional quartet. They also sing in concerts and festival services throughout the year. Adult choir rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 10.

Handbell Choir: This group is led by Gordon Downing and meets Sundays after the late service to practice. They play periodically in Sunday morning worship services and are open to all who would like to learn the art of handbell ringing.

Matins Choir: the Matins Choir provides liturgical leadership in the early service, and has a warm up rehearsal at 8:40 on Sunday mornings, and sings about twice a month. There are also needs for vocal soloists and instrumentalists throughout the year. Do you play an instrument? Please contact me so we can use your gifts as well. There are no auditions for any choir at St. Paul’s. All you need is a love of singing and leading worship to find your place in one of our choirs. Andy Heller

Aid for Friends Thank You

Thanks to the faithful families who turned out to assemble 98 nutritious dinners for Aid for Friends at our summer event in August. It was wonderful to see very young children and youth working side by side and watching the freezer fill up. Summer is the most challenging season for AFF, so our donations is especially timely. AFF is one of the best ways to teach our kids about compassion and sharing in our own homes and with our own hands.

Deepest gratitude goes out to all who donated supplies or money to purchase healthy ingredients - this congregation is generous beyond measure!

Please remember our silent hungry homebound as you shop and make your dinners this fall. Your leftovers are the best meal in town for someone nearby.

Save the Date: Saturday, Oct. 3: An informal reception for Pastor Wilbert Miller will

be held at the home of Bill & Barb Henderson, 7-9pm. Pastor Miller was

the senior pastor at St. Paul’s from 1995 to 2005 and is now the Senior

Pastor of First Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA. Pastor Miller will be

our guest preacher celebrating our 250th Anniversary on October 4, 2015.

An Update from Social Ministry:

Tragedy Hits the Iraqi Refugee Family, the Albahadly’s: Since 2013, members of St. Paul's have helped resettle an Iraqi refugee family, Hussain and Hanan, and their three (now four) children. Hussain had worked for the U.S. in the Green Zone of Baghdad and, when his neighbors discovered it, his life was threatened. Most recently, Hussain had been working at Villanova University in food service. On Sunday, July 19th, Hussain had a heart attack while in the lake at Marsh Creek State Park. He died the next day. His body has been returned to Iraq for burial. Hanan has decided to remain in the U.S. for the sake of her four children. We ask that you remember the Albahadly’s in your prayers and should you want to help or support them in any way, please contact Laura Bickert Ciarlello ([email protected]). Their address will be on file with the church office, should anyone want to send condolences. We may be hosting a memorial service in the near future at St. Paul's and will keep the congregation abreast of plans to do so.

What is Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Ministry is a system through which lay members of our church

are trained and organized to help provide Christian caregiving to

members of our congregation and community. This multiplies the

amount of caring ministry St. Paul’s can provide by giving us a whole

team of skilled caregivers who are equipped to bring Christ’s healing

love to people who are grieving, in crisis, or experiencing other stresses

in life.

If you are interested in learning more about our Stephen Minister

program at St. Paul’s or know of someone who is going through a hard

time and could benefit from a Stephen Minister, please talk to one of our

Stephen Leaders: Beth McElvenney, Hazel Pelletreau, Pastor Skip, or

Pastor Laura.

Save the Date

CROP Hunger Walk

Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 1:00 pm

Women and girls carry water home in Geles, an Arab village in Darfur.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Monies and goods will be sent to aid recent flood, hurricane, and earthquake victims, to relieve famine in Africa, and to help war refugees in Darfur, Gaza, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Syria. Additional projects are funded in Brazil, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Depending on need, at least 10% of our donations come back to feed the hungry in our own area. Please note, contributors can specify one of many denominational charities to receive the donation. These include, for instance, Project Hope or Lutheran World Relief. If the contributor does not designate a recipient, Church World Service, a consortium of Protestant and Orthodox Churches, will quite capably direct the money to needy recipients. More information to follow!
