GOOD WORDS from Logan Duvall (Charlotte Duvall’s grandson) who has become employed in doing theater lighting around the area and got a start at it by helping us on a project...

“I really miss being over there, and seeing my grandma. The nature of the lighting industry is such that a lot of the time things have to get done over the weekend. Com-bine that with the fact that starting out, I've been hesitant to say no to a gig for fear

of losing a contact or an opportunity, and it's meant that I've ended up missing several Sundays in a row. …. I'm going to make more of an effort to get over there to see her and everyone else over at North Chevy Chase.

Anyway, sorry for the lengthy reply. I guess I just thought it'd make you happy to know what a differ-ence my experience over there has made in my life. When I'm over there, I feel serene, and I can think in a way that I can't anywhere else. I get a vibe from a lot of the congregation that nowadays it's very hard to

reach out to the younger generation and impact their lives in a positive way. While I may not be that young anymore, or the best example of the average youth struggling to come to terms with life, sometimes all it takes to point someone in the right direction is to just be the good people that you all are. That's the way

Jesus did it; he was just good; a kind of pure good that was undeniably the truth. If my story can help the church in any way, feel free to share it…. “ Logan Duvall

A big THANK YOU goes to all the folks who support NC4 Out-reach and participat-

ed in the assembly of emergency cleanup buckets and school

backpacks with essen-tial supplies. Some

items were purchased by the church from the

general operating funds and the rest was do-nated by individuals. Altogether we donated 13 cleanup buckets and 13 school back

packs. The value of each cleanup bucket is $56. Nancy Solomon took the buckets to Church World Service at the Brethren Service

Center Annex in New Windsor, MD. From there, they will be distributed where need-ed. These supplies enable people to begin

the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood, hurricane, tornado, or other disaster here in the United States. Each backpack with

supplies is also valued at ~$50. They were taken to the Rockville Interfaith Clothing Cen-ter which is a division of Interfaith

works. Each year they provide o er 2100 local students with new backpacks filled with new school supplies so that they can start the

year with hope and excitement. Teens from the community help operate this program and spend part of their summer organizing and

managing this program.

the project when they are available. Typical-ly, you will need to provide your own lunch, a reusable water bottle and work gloves, if you

North Chevy Chase Christian Church Legacy Circle

Reflections on the Future of the Church and the work of the Christian Church Foundation from Rev. Dr. Laird Thomason

On the Sunday of my return from the General Assembly, several people asked if my Assembly

experience reflected a positive outlook for the future of our beloved Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) It did, on many, many levels. One ongoing evidence of this is reflected in the life of the Christian Church Foundation. Fifty years

ago a few farsighted leaders who saw the need and the promise for an investment fund to supplement and to ensure the work of our church into perpetuity, and to allow a means, for people to continue to support their church in ways that are responsible and accountable to the entire church, founded the CCF.

By 1987 when the Bethesda Christian Church established a fund through the sale of its building, I was impressed that we increased the investment balance of the CCF by 8%. This reflected a $40,000,000 port-folio, an impressive amount it seemed. Shortly after, a lay couple added $8 million and the CCF has

continued to grow at impressive rates. At that time my wife Evelyn was a member of the Board of the CCF. This enabled me to see the staff at work, and the workings of the Foundation in encouraging congregations and individuals to “Make a

Difference” in the lives of individuals and congregations to discover the joy of sharing our resources to fur-ther the work of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Twenty-five years later the CCF reports a balance of $330,000,000 with a distribution to all

ministries of the church of some $15,000,000, thanks to demonstrably well managed investment experience. Our North Chevy Chase Christian Church congregation has become an integral part of that story in recent years. After years of preparation and study we were prepared to offer church members assurances

boarding on guarantees that they can entrust their accumulated resources to support themselves and the on-going ministries of the church to which they have contributed throughout much of their lives. At this time the NC4 funds invested through the CCF exceeds $606,000, which have enabled us to

distribute over $42,000 in 2012-2013 to ministries designated by the congregation through the Permanent Endowment Fund Policy. Each gift and each giver represents life experiences and convictions and testimonies of folk we know

and admire, living on now through the legacies they have given us by their living, and including their confidence in the future of the work of the church they continue to support. Out of gratitude to those beloved church members, the Trustees of the Permanent Endowment Fund of

the North Chevy Chase Christian Church are establishing a LEGACY CIRCLE, to inform and inspire others to share their commitment and confidence in the future of our church. Perhaps you recall the letter sent by Pastor Cheryl encouraging us to think about NC4, and how we

can support it now and for the ongoing future. This Fall we will provide more information about this LEGACY CIRCLE with an initial gathering of fellowship and mutual support.

I was asked if I was encouraged by the future of our denomination. I am. Am I encouraged by the life and work of North Chevy Chase Christian Church? You bet I am! Ask me, or any of the former or current Permanent Endowment Fund Trustees for further information, and plan to attend the gathering of the

LEGACY CIRCLE to be announced soon. Permanent Endowment Fund Trustees: Chair-Jim Heintze, Sec.-Treasurer, Nancy Longo, Members Buzzy

Barnard, Ann McClure, and Laird Thomason.
