    Weare here this week toCelebrate20

    Years of (OS1) Cleaning. Some may say

    Whatis there tocelebrate?Wellspeaking

    formyself,Iamheretocelebrateallofyou

    andyour continuedsupport for the(OS1)

    program.

    Asmost,ifnotallofyou,areaware,near-

    ly25 yearsago a couple ofmuch younger

    mensetabouttochangethewaytheworld

    cleaned andmanaged facilities and the in-

    door environment. That was indeed the

    originofManageMens(OS1)cleaningpro-gram. Ofwhich I am very proud to have

    beeninvolvedwithandhavecontinuedtobe

    asmallpartofuptoandincludingtoday.

    ThecelebrationI am havingheretoday

    isattherequestofacertainunnamedindi-

    vidualwhofeltitwasabouttimeorperhaps

    evenoverdoforthisoldengineertoreect

    backoverthesepast25yearsuponhisorigi-

    nal ideasandplansfora standardized and

    professionalcleaningmanagementprogram.

    Today I am nally reporting to that indi-vidualandtothisgrouponjusthowInd

    theprogramhasdevelopedandbeenimple-

    mented.

    Iofferyouthefollowingreport.Itisbased

    onmyoriginal outline for the program in

    1987,andmycurrentndingsandmycon-

    clusion.

    ORIGINAL PROGRAM OUTLINE 1987

    AND FINDINGS OF THE CURRENT

    PROGRAM 2012

    Original Program Element #1

    Theequipmentusedwouldbethebestfo

    all usages, available nationwidewith spar

    partsalsoavailable.Itwillbeeasytouseandmaintainwithahighusablelifespan.

    Findings:

    Thisparthasbeenfullyimplementedus

    ingthepropertools,suppliesandequipment

    fortheprogram.Newitemscontinuetobe

    identied,and tested and put tousewhen

    applicable. All components are constantly

    reviewed and updated as needed. The us

    of the programs equipment checkout and

    check in systemallows for several valuable

    aspects for supervisors andmanagersbothforinventorycontrolbutalsoforscheduled

    maintenance for all of related equipment

    Additionally supportingvendorshave con

    tinued tobe engaged and have also devel

    oped new systems and products related to

    meetthe(OS1)standards.

    All chemicals used will be standardized,

    alsoavailablenationwide.Theywillbeofas

    noncausticabasisasavailableandwillmeet

    orexceedallgovernmentstandardsforsafety.

    Findings:

    Thisveryimportantfactorhasbeenmet

    and exceeded far beyondmy expectations,

    bothwiththeuseofmeasuredproductsand

    theirimplementation, theadditionofkit-

    tingforusagehasprovidedvaluableinven-

    torycontrolfeaturesandhasprovidedadded

    safe guards for all applications. These fea-

    turesalongwiththeimplementationoftheoutstandingBeyondComplianceprogram

    within(OS1)aretrulycuttingedgeinthein-

    dustry.

    Original Program Element #3

    The method for cleaning of the facil-

    itywill be standardizedmethods and pro-

    ceduresand conductedusing aTeamap-

    proach,andnotbyZoneareas.

    Findings:

    This aspecthas andcontinues to bethemethodofchoiceformosttasksworkloaded

    andemployedby (OS1),andI believe this

    method has beenproven interms ofwork

    loadingtobeaverylargepartintheoverall

    propermanpowerassignmentandusageand

    alargepartofthesuccessfortheoverallpro-

    gram.

    Original Program Element #4

    Allworkerswill be properly trained for

    specicfunctionsontheteami.e.;RestroomSpecialist,FloorSpecialist,Utility Specialist

    etc.Allworkerswillbeabletocrosstrainin

    allaspectsoftheprogram.

    Findings:

    Training has been and continues to be

    oneofthemostimportantpartsofthe(OS1)

    program, beginning with the outstanding

    JanitorsUniversityformat,andtheamaz-

    ing Boot Camp and related literature as

    well as the Train the Trainers programs

    right down to theon site training centers

    ateachlocation,andofcoursethecoaches.

    Simplystateditisthebesttrainingprogram

    byfarintheindustrytoday.

    Original Program Element #5

    AllworkerswillbetreatedwithRespect

    at all times and rewarded for their levels

    oftrainingandexpertise;theywillbeuni-

    formedandwillshowtheircapabilitiesinthe

    formofbadging.

    Findings:

    The program has provided for this im-

    portantprincipletobeimplementedsystem

    wide although uniforms are the choice of

    each (OS1) program user, the rewards for

    trainingandrelatedexpertisearealwaysrec-

    ognizedanddocumented,andtheRespect

    is always afforded each individual in an

    (OS1)programasbeingamemberofatruly

    professional cleaning organization. Many

    timesIveheardofrequestsfromotherfa-cilitiesmaintenancedepartments inquiring

    ofsimilartypeprogramsfortheirrespective

    groups.

    Original Program Element #6

    Theentireprogramwouldwithallofits

    componentsbeabletobeimplementedany-

    whereinthecountryorworldwideforthat

    matter; I called it the CookieCutter ap-

    proach.

    Findings:

    I needonly tolookabout this (sympo-

    sium meeting) room; this program truly

    hasbeenandcontinuestobeimplemented

    almosteverywherethataninformedorgani-

    zationdiscoversalloftheopportunitiesand

    therelatedbenetsofan(OS1)program.

    Original Program Element #7

    Theentireprogramwouldbeconstantly

    reviewed for improvements and upgrade

    forallaspectsofthesystem,andbestprac

    ticesidentiedandemployedsystemwide.

    Findings:

    LadiesandGentlemen,I giveyou,allo

    youTheSimon Institutefor thesepast 11

    plusyears,thisgrouphasleadthe(OS1)pro-

    gram,anddareIsaytheentireIndustry,with

    identifying,benchmarkingandadoptingthe

    BestPracticesfornotonly(OS1)butforthe

    entireJanitorialIndustry,allofyouarethe

    trulytheProfessionalsofCleaning.

    CONCLUSION:

    Thecurrent(OS1)programhascertainly

    metallofmyoriginalrequirements,andin

    allcaseshasexceededthembeyondmyex

    pectations,I look forward tothe future o

    theindoorworldenvironmentasthosere-

    sponsible for maintaining it become more

    andmoreawareofthebenetsof(OS1)and

    choosetomakeitamuchCleanerandSafer

    placeforallofustobe.Formepersonally,I

    cannotthinkofabetterreasontoCelebrateCleaning.
