Don’t miss the opera event of the season — Presented with innovative and original animation, this made-for-Cleveland production plumbs the depths of human experience in a charming tale of love, peril, freedom, and family. On the surface, the story is about childish things, but underneath human emotions boil over and burst apart between the “animals of the forest” and their human interlocutors.

Janáček’s score mixes lyrical symphonic writing with intriguing rhythmic touches, lovingly combined with the songful serenity and energetic pulse of Moravian folk music.

The Cleveland Orchestra Christoph von Dohnányi, conductor

SChUMANN Symphony No. 4 SChUMANN Symphony No. 2

Robert Schumann’s symphonies are intensely personal ideals of what classical music can represent — life’s joys and travails, the momentary sorrows and great uplifting joys, captured in clear and concise musical form. Their glowing lyricism, drama, and evocative atmosphere defined the style of what a Romantic symphony can be. Renowned for his interpretations of this tremendously imaginative composer, Christoph von Dohnányi returns for these all-Schumann concerts.

DVOřÁK Cello Concerto tChAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6 (“Pathétique”)

A pairing of works by two of the greatest melodic masters. Composed during his time in New York, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is a wistful, lyrical love letter to his Bohemian homeland. In contrast, Tchaikovsky’s emotionally turbulent — and genuinely gorgeous — final symphony explores the triumphs and tragedies of life. In this work, the composer declared, he had put his “whole soul into” the music. [Pop culture note: Excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Sixth can be heard in a variety of films, including Maurice, the 1997 version of Anna Karenina, Soylent Green, and The Aviator.]

The collaboration between director Alfred Hitchcock and composer Bernard Herrmann resulted in a number of great, unforgettable films — and the pinnacle of this collaboration is perhaps one of the scariest and most powerful movie scores of all time. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) impulsively steals $40,000 from her employer, hoping to leave Phoenix for good and start a new life. She decides to stop for the night at the Bates Motel, where Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) regales her with curious stories about his mother. ROUSE Rapture FRANK Will-o’-the-Wisp: Tone Poem for Piccolo and Orchestra [WORLD PREMIERE COMMISSION] MOzARt Requiem

The story begins like a work of fiction: A messenger arrives on Mozart’s doorstep with a commission for a Requiem Mass from an anonymous patron. Mozart began the work, but as he did, he became increasingly convinced of his own fate ... he said to a friend, “I am writing my own funeral music. I must not leave it unfinished.” Tragically, he was destined to die before completing the Requiem. This final great work is a piece of supreme beauty, powerful and fearless in its visions of the Last Judgment, exquisite in its peaceful evocation of salvation and eternal rest. [Pop culture note: this work served as inspiration for the multi-Oscar-winning film Amadeus.]
