Mission Trip Memories
Thank you Messiah for your
support and prayers for the 2015
high school mission trip! Just over a
month ago, 33 youth and 10 adults
from Messiah traveled to
Wetumpka, AL. The experience was
extraordinary and I am so moved
and inspired by the youth and
adults of our community. The week
was spent serving the community
through work projects painting
homes, working with children in a
Kids’ Club and visiting with
residents of a nursing home. Every
evening as we gathered for church
time, the youth and adults were
bursting with details of their day
and the ways that their hearts and
minds were touched and moved by
the community we served. The
youth look forward to sharing
reflections from their summer
journey with you his fall.

From The Pastor
By Teresa Palumbo,
Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator
It was the last day of vacation this sum-
mer and the children were still sleeping. I was
sitting on the screened in porch at the place we
were staying and enjoying a cup of coffee. I was
listening to the birds, and just relaxing. Against
my first impulse I decided to open my email. One
should never do that on vacation! Amidst all of
the personal correspondence there was also a
note from the bank reminding me that we had
just made three payments. The MG&E bill had
been sent out, also a credit card payment to Best
Buy, and of course the monthly car payment.
Ugh, I thought to myself, will there ever be
enough money in our checking account where I
will feel comfortable? Will I ever NOT worry about
money? Will we ever have enough? I wish I were
wealthy! I took another sip of coffee, sat back
and closed my eyes. I reflected back on the mem-
ories of this summer.
I remembered feeling pride at Ben's com-
pletion ceremony from Whitehorse middle
school, his trip to Washington DC and the great
adventure he shared with friends. I thought of
how excited Joey was to finish the sixth grade
and get on with the summer. I recalled the many
bicycle rides that I took with Rachel and her joy in
every new experience. My thoughts fell to the
walks with Melissa and the many talks, the trip to
Neenah and sitting at my mom’s bedside as she
returned from shoulder surgery. I thought of the
gathering with my family in Shawano - raucous
T H E C O L U M N P a g e 3
laughter and deep love of my brothers
and sisters. I remembered Melissa’s and
Ben’s excitement as they returned from
Alabama and my claim to the title of
World’s OK-est Dad! There was the even-
ing at the Mallards game and another at
the Timber Rattlers in Appleton when Joey
won a Baseball Bingo contest, and another
exciting outing at Miller Park with Ben. I
recalled watching Rachel swim at Devils
Lake, the trip to Wisconsin Dells with my
in-laws, the outing at Noah's Ark, the hike
in Witch's Gulch, horseback riding with
Rachel, swimming in the rain, and looking
up at the stars, having Ben teach me to
play euchre, going for ice cream, miniature
golfing with Joey, playing with our dog
Sprecher, worshipping on Sunday morn-
ings at Messiah, telling stories, sharing
jokes, and stretching the truth! All of these
memories came flooding back – and so
many more.
I leisurely drank my cup of coffee
thinking of the past three months – and
thought of how foolish I was. I had longed
to be wealthy and the Divine One had al-
lowed me so many wonderful memories. I
could hear the Spirit of God speak to me
in the depths of my heart: Never forget
dear Jeff, memories make you rich!
Memories make you rich! That
could be a line straight out of the Old Tes-
tament. Having spent Sunday mornings
this summer preaching on texts from the
prophets, Ezekiel and Hosea, Jeremiah and
Amos, I’m beginning to realize that the
common thread of all their preaching has
to do with memories. Each of the prophets
in his own way is calling the children of
Israel to remember – to recall the great
deeds of God that give their lives mean-
ing. The Hebrew people are calling out to
God unceasingly. They ask for wealth and
comfort. They long for ease and power.
They want freedom from stress and prob-
lems. Still the prophets cause them to re-
member the Divine One and all that God
has given them. They tell them that God is
always on their side. The prophets remind
the Children of Israel that they are already
rich!
I think it is important every so of-
ten – perhaps even daily – to reflect back
and remember what gives your life mean-
ing. In what ways has God blessed you this
day, this week, this summer? What are the
events that have given you joy, and peo-
ple that have offered you love, and adven-
tures that have filled you with life? What
are the memories that you cherish above
all else? Take some time this week, close
your eyes and remember the beauty of
your life. Perhaps you will hear in the
depths of your heart what I heard last
week:
Never forget dear Child of God,
memories make you rich!

Treasurer’s Report By Tim Coulthart, Treasurer and
Business Manager
We are now 33 weeks into
the budget year and
Pledged Revenue received
to date is $265,300
compared to the budget of
$227,300, so we are
$38,000 ahead of the
budget.
One reason for the large
jump in Pledged Revenue
was the donation of
appreciated stock by two
families. Donated stock
allows the donor to avoid
paying tax on the stocks
appreciated value and also
allows the family to take a
tax deduction on the
donation. We sell the
stock soon after it is
received to “lock” in the
value. If you have any
questions about donating
stock to the church please
contact the church office.
The current balance of the
mortgage is $808,100.

Sinner’s Dinners coming this fall.
Do you like a good meal and the company of
friendly people? Then join your fellow “sinners”
of Messiah for a fellowship activity beginning
this fall called “Sinner's Dinners”. It's a great
way to share stories, food, and fun with your
friends, old AND new. We will form new groups,
but there is a possibility of having someone
from last year in your group again. Again, the
idea is to meet NEW people.
Here's how it works.... Just sign your name and
information on the sign-up sheet found in the
gathering space at church, OR call Jim at 608-
224-2664 for more information. Then we will
take all the names and form groups of 8 to 10.
This activity is for both singles and couples.
Couples will be kept together in the same
group. You will be notified of the people in
your group and their contact information. One
of the members will be assigned to be the 'host'
for the first meal. After that, each single or
couple will host a meal until each household has
had a turn. This will usually be 4 or 5 meals over
a 9 month period. Then in the fall we will
reorganize the groups so that each household is
with mostly different people and we do it again.
It's a great way to get to know people for the
first time.
'Hosting' a meal does not mean providing the
whole meal. Instead, the host usually provides
the main course, whether it is a meat dish or
something else, and the rest of the meal is
shared. It is the duty of the host to ask each
household to bring a particular dish to
accompany that main course. For example, the
host family might want to do a chicken dish as
the main course, but ask another couple to
bring the potatoes, and another member to
bring a vegetable dish, and another member a
dessert or appetizer, etc. The host family usually
provides the beverage as well, including beer or
wine if that is their wish.
Once a group has met at the first host's house,
it is up to that group to schedule the next meal
and its host. Each group can choose the type of
food that best fits its members. Be creative, it's
part of the fun, but also be flexible and
accommodating to the individual needs of the
other members in your group. There is no
agenda to the dinners other than friendly
conversation and a willingness to meet fellow
Messians, old and new. This is intended as an
adult's night out, so arrangements for
babysitting should be made. However, in the
past, groups have been flexible in how they
handle this.
The only qualification is that you are a
'sinner'. (No one has an excuse not to sign
up!) Call (608) 242-0462 to sign-up.

a month. They run from
September through May.
I am looking forward to
seeing all current
members, as well as any
new members who might
be interested.

Sunday Meals on Wheels
The sign-up sheet for
September is full. Thank you!
A sign-up for October will soon
be posted. If you have
questions, please call Diane
Iverson at (608) 242-0462.
Thanks to the following

during the month of August.
Your service to others is greatly
appreciated! –Kim Dietzman &
Glori Sabin, Pam & Tom
Aldridge, Ron & Jean Smith,
Don & Gloria Hehenberger and
Dale & Peggy Ziege.
A huge thank you goes out to
Jim Schulte. On the second
Wednesday of every other
month for close to 18 years
Jim has been the 'go to' cook
for preparing the Meal for the
Homeless men at the Episcopal
church in downtown
Madison. He has also served
that meal on countless
occasions. Messiah has made
commitment to prepare and
serve those meals and Jim has
been the cornerstone of that
effort. Just recently, he has
had to step back from that
ministry because of a welcome
job change. One benefit of
that change will be that we
will see him on Sunday
mornings. If you see him,
please offer your thanks and
congratulations. His efforts
have truly been an example of
God's kingdom!
THE ROAD HOME
The Road Home has been
serving homeless families with

per year and includes single
parents, two parents, and other
types of families. Eighty
percent of families in this
shelter move into housing and
maintain them for over a year.
The following is a WISH LIST
for The Road Home. Donations
can be placed in the
designated bin in the former
Narthex and will be delivered
to The Road Home. Thanks for
your donations!

Backpack & School Supply Drive
Thank you!
We were able to give 100 backpacks filled with
school supplies to elementary school-aged
children. Thank you for being so very
generous. Backpacks were delivered to 4 area
elementary schools (Elvehjem, Glendale,
Lakeview, and Schenk), to Road Home,
Salvation Army Emergency Center, and DAIS.
Each organization was delighted to be able to
put these to use for children most in need.
Thank you for helping the kids of our
community make a good start to the school
year!
Sunday Morning Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed as room helpers for
several age groups with large enrollments. We
would like to have 2 or 3 helpers per class so
they can take turns helping out.
Several people are needed to do room set-up
on Sunday mornings before the 8:15 a.m.
liturgy. The work takes about 10 minutes and
involves setting up tables and chairs and
putting supply bins in classroom. Ideally we
will have 2 or 3 teams who can take turns
helping. Contact Catherine for more
information.
THANK YOU!
The family of Barb Barr and myself want to extend our thanks to all that remembered us in your prayers, card and
thoughts during our difficult time and funeral. Many thanks to Pastor Jeff for his visits, prayers and time he spent with
