Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Covington Catholic High School

In 2008–09, we achieved many great strides as we continued to build upon our tradition of educating young men spiritually, academically, physically and socially. The Covington Catholic community witnessed the ground breaking, stages of construction, and the dedication of our beautiful grotto and Schott Sports Center. Edline, an online grading system for teachers,

parents and students was implemented. The seniors garnered over 7.5 million dollars in scholarships – record-setting for our school’s history. The entire student body provided 12,431 hours of volunteer service to our community. In the spring, our athletic teams carried on the tradition of excellence with the first ever Track & Field State Championship, a Tennis Regional Championship with Jimmy Roebker capturing the individual State Championship, and the Baseball team finishing as Regional runners-up.

Currently 125 freshmen are enrolled for this fall. In order to continue to offer our students a variety of options, some changes and additions to the curriculum have been implemented. During the 2009-10 school year, an 8th grade Algebra course for high-achieving 8th graders from our district grade schools will be offered. The 8th graders who successfully complete the Algebra course will receive a high school credit when they attend Covington Catholic, allowing them to take more advanced math classes as they work towards their high school diplomas. An Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry course will be offered to the upper classmen for the first time. As part of the AP requirements for this Chemistry course, the students will complete the lab component at Thomas More College. In addition to these changes, the Academic Support Program, which provides additional instruction to students, will expand to a full-time program.

In closing, I encourage you to attend a game, class reunion or any of the various activities that we host throughout the year. While you are visiting, I hope you will take a few minutes to tour the campus and share the pride that we take in our ever-expanding complex. I would like to express my gratitude for the many ways that our alumni support this institution, whether it be through their annual appeal gift, their efforts in organizing a reunion or their attendance at a sporting event. These are just a few examples of the many ways that our alumni continue to show their support.

On Tuesday, April 28, Covington Catholic High School announced the establishment of the Wm. T. (Bill) & Joan Wernersbach Robinson III Scholarship Fund. The school celebrated with a Mass in the gymnasium attended by the entire student body along with the Robinsons’ family and friends. Bill Robinson addressed the students briefly after Mass. In his remarks, he expressed how hon-ored and grateful he and his wife, Joan, are to establish this scholarship fund for the support of quality catholic education for aspiring students. He emphasized the positive impact this fund is expected to have toward the students’ success and fulfillment in life. After his remarks, former student Zach Holbrook ’95 lead the student body in a rousing cheer, Cha Cha Kul La, adding much to the shared enthusiasm of the students and the guests.

Joan and Bill are both graduates of Catholic education at the elementary, high school (Bill at St. Gregory’s Seminary and Joan at Villa Madonna Academy) and the college level. They met at Thomas More College (then Villa Madonna College in Covington) in 1965 and will have been married forty (40) years on August 2, 2009. Their son, Todd graduated from Covington Catholic in 1991.

Family friend, Dennis Doyle said “When we learned that Bill and Joan were establishing an endowed scholarship at Covington Catholic, Lois and I were thrilled to participate in its funding. Bill and Joan are products of a Catholic education. They are role models for future students. With this scholarship, they once again demonstrate their willingness to give back to the local institutions and the regional community they esteem. Bill is well known throughout the Greater Cincinnati area as an outstanding attorney and community leader. In addition to his successful law practice with Frost Brown Todd LLC and his extensive com-munity service, he has contributed thousands of volunteer hours to the advance-ment of the legal profession over the past 25 years. Bill is a past President of the Kentucky Bar Association and the immediate past Treasurer of the American Bar Association (ABA), the largest professional organization in the world with over 400,000 members. More recently, Bill is now unopposed as the candidate for ABA President-Elect 2010. And Joan has been at his side every step of the way. It is by reason of the support of families such as the Robinsons that Covington Catholic continues to graduate such outstanding young men.”

Interest earned from this scholarship will fund tuition aid for students and fam-ilies who could otherwise not afford to attend Covington Catholic High School.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Clyde Gray, emceed as a room filled with family, friends, business associates and community leaders showed their appreciation for all John has done to enhance the lives of people in this region. The audience was also entertained with a video by some of John’s closest friends including Joe Gross, President St. Elizabeth Healthcare; Robert (Bob) Cooper, Vice President Hilliard Lyons; Paula Kerger, President & CEO Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and his son John, all of whom shared some special memories about the honoree.

This year marked the 13th annual Northern Kentuckian of the Year Award. It is an honor reserved for a community member that has distinguished himself as a leader dedicated to both the economic and social well-being of the Northern Kentucky region. Special thanks goes out to all who supported this event; our honoree, the committee, the co-chair John V. Domaschko, Tim Haders and his art students and the Covington Catholic Chamber Choir.

2009 NorthernKentuckian of the Year

2009 Alumni Basketball TournamentThe annual Alumni Basketball Tournament took place the weekend of March 27, 28 and 29 in the gymnasium at

Covington Catholic. A new record was set for the number of Colonels taking part this year- Sixteen teams with 131 players! That meant 30 games with a total of 120 referees and volunteers.

Games commenced Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. with players on the court until midnight. Games were played intramural style (half court using the side baskets) with two games going at all times. Saturday’s games began at 9:00 a.m., and over the course of fourteen hours, a game was played every hour. Sunday’s first game started at noon and the tip-off for the finals was at 2:30 p.m.

It was a grueling three days, which resulted in new winners!!! But before they could play in the finals, the eventual champion Team Erpenbeck had to defeat Team McQuade. In an awesome game which resulted in double overtime, Team Erpenbeck prevailed. Matt Nestheide’04 led with 26 points while Brian McQuade ‘00 and Todd Jacobs ’07 both had 21 points. In the finals, Team Erpenbeck defeated Team Kreyling 68-49. Matt Nestheide again led scoring with 20 points. Marc Bain ‘02 was the leading scorer with 17 points for Team Kreyling. Thanks to Mickey Fritz ‘99 & Brook Dyas ‘97 for organizing the event and also to everyone that came out to watch, to play and volunteer. We are looking forward to next year.

On May 22nd, the Track and Field Colonels, over-looked by many going in to the championship meet, showed what a team can do when motivated, capturing the school’s first track and field championship. The Colonels were on fire all day, stepping up when they needed to and grabbing points where they could. Chad Schadler started things off right with a 4th place showing in shot put, despite entering the meet ranked 10th. The 4x800 relay kept the momentum, taking 6th and dropping their time by 10 seconds. Paul Cusick added to the tally with a 3rd place finish in the 110 Hurdles. The 4x200 relay not only finished in 2nd place but broke the school record, lowering that time to 1:31.12, accomplishing a goal they had established back in March. The 4x100 relay added another 8 points with a strong second place. Stephen Schwab came in 4th in the 800 with a 2:00.24, shattering his personal record. The 4x400 relay, with a late line-up change, brought home 4th place with their first sub 3:30 of the year. While all of this was going on, in the jumps, the Colonels made it happen. Alex Connelly won the high jump with a 6’4” season best. In long jump, Nick Hushebeck and Conner Maschinot took 3rd and 4th

respectively, earning much needed points. The meet took a strange turn when the referee decided to re-run the final heat of the 300 hurdles after a nasty fall appeared to impede another runner. In the end, the title came down to the feet of Paul Cusick, who placed third in the 300 to give the Colonels the 6 points needed to break the 61 point tie we had with Central going into that final race.

It was an incredible effort by all of the men. The Colonels capitalized on a few mistakes by other squads and made it happen. Everyone set a person record for the day and exemplified the Spirit That Will Not Die.

On Friday, March 27, seven months after the groundbreak-ing ceremony, Covington Catholic dedicated its new Grotto and Schott Sports Center. Principal Bob Rowe welcomed a crowd of students, par-ents, supporters, community leaders and media with a brief overview of the newest additions to the Coving-ton Catholic Campus. Following Mr. Rowe, parent Tom Schutzman, At-torney at Law, spoke about the con-struction of the grotto. It was truly a labor of love since Mr. Schutzman, along with his nephew Stephen, put in over 1400 hours constructing the Grotto. They endured long nights, excessive heat and an entire summer of work to get the project completed before the arrival of cold weather. Mr. Schutzman became very emo-tional when thanking his family for their sacrifice of his time which helped to make the Grotto a reality. Following Mr. Schutzman’s com-ments, his sons Nick ’09 & Luke ‘11 unveiled the statue of Mary. The program continued with past parent, Mike Hemmer, Sr. Vice President of Paul Hemmer Companies, who gave a brief overview of the build-ing process and thanked those who supported the construction of the Schott Sports Center. Steve Bailey, Esq., Martin & Bailey and friend of the Marge Schott Foundation, spoke of Marge’s love of baseball and Catholic education as well as the foundation’s mission to support institutions such as CCH, an institu-tion steeped in pride and tradition. Father Mark Keane, Pastoral Ad-ministrator, thanked the community for their support and dedication in helping to enrich the lives of those students who currently attend and those who will attend Covington Catholic in the future. The Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, D.D. then proceeded with the blessing of the

Grotto and Schott Sports Cen-ter. The blessing ceremony in-cluded senior Luke Maile read-ing a passage from Luke, which brought a light-hearted comment from the Bishop about “never having had introduced Luke to read from the book of Luke.” The Chamber Choir concluded the blessing with the Ave Ma-ria which was followed by Dan Tieman ’58 leading the crowd in the CCH Fight Song. That night Mr. Tieman also led the first rosary service at the grotto.

The new two-story Schott Sports Center is 8,600 sq. ft. and will serve a variety of sports including baseball, soc-cer, track and field, cross coun-try and lacrosse. So far batting cages, 149 lockers, office equip-ment, equipment for the train-ing room and padding for the weight room have been installed.

Some facts about the grotto:• The stones which make up the Grotto weigh a total of 220 tons • The top stone weighs 5 ½ tons and is supported by a plate of steel. • The statue of Mary was hand carved in Italy out of Carrara marble and weighs 1400 lbs and stands 7’ tall. • The grotto has three water fountains and lights. • This is the first outside display of reverence to Mary on the school property since the construction of the new school.

1949 – Dr. Jack Brueggeman and his committee are planning their 60th reunion for September 19th. The reunion will begin with the football game against Beechwood at 1PM. Additional information will follow.

1954 – Nick Brake has organized their 55th reunion. On September 25th there will be a dinner at South Hills Civic Club. On September 26th they will attend the football game against Newport Central Catholic at 1PM with a social in the CCH cafeteria afterwards. More information will follow.

1959 – “Golden Colonels” Tom Franxman and his committee are planning their 50th reunion for the weekend of September 25th. The weekend will begin on Friday with a cookout in the CCH cafeteria and a tour of the new facility. On Saturday September 26th the “Golden Colonels” will attend the 1PM game against Newport Central Catholic with a reception in the cafeteria after the game. The weekend will conclude with a dinner Saturday evening at the Ft. Mitchell Country Club.

1964 – Bill Snyder and his committee are planning their 45th reunion on August 21st. The day will begin with a golf outing at Traditions Golf Club and conclude with a stag dinner at CCH.

1969 – Denny Egan and Mark Pfeiffer have organized their 40th reunion. The reunion will begin October 16th with a golf outing and a class stag in the evening at CCH.

On Saturday October 17th they will attend the football game at 1PM against Highlands. The weekend will conclude with a dinner dance on Saturday evening.

1974 – To date there have been no plans made for 1974’s 35th reunion. If you are interested in organizing the reunion, please contact Sue Finke or Annette Restle in the CCH Development Office at 448-2247. There is still plenty of time!

1979 – Joe McGinnis and his committee have scheduled their 30th reunion. The reunion will begin August 21st with a golf outing followed by a Florence Freedom game. On October 17th they will attend the 1PM football game against Highlands followed by a Mass at Mary Queen of Heaven at 5:30PM. That evening there will be a dinner at Summit Hills Country Club.

1984 – Tom Eckerle, Jack VonHandorf and their committee are working on their 25th reunion. Tentative plans are for a golf outing with the class of ’79 reunion. More details to follow.

1989 – Dan Ruh and his committee have their 20th reunion planned. The reunion will begin October 23rd with a 7PM football game at Dixie followed by a reception at the South Hills Civic Club. Saturday morning, October 24th, the attendees will load onto a bus and spend the day at Keeneland.

1994 – Mike Meier and his committee are planning their 15th reunion. Friday evening, October 16th, there will be a gathering for classmates and their spouses or significant others. Saturday, the 17th, attendees will root on their fellow Colonels at the 1PM football game against Highlands with a reception following the game in the CCH cafeteria.

1999 – Dan Barczak is in the beginning stages of planning the 10th reunion. If you are interested in helping Dan, you can contact him at uni3@hotmail.com. He has also created a FaceBook group for the class of 1999: Covington Catholic class of 1999

2004 - To date there have been no plans made for 2004’s 5th reunion. If you are interested in organizing the reunion, please contact Sue Finke or Annette Restle in the Development Office at CCH at 448-2247. There is still plenty of time!

Golf Reunion – Steve Sorrell is planning a golf reunion for October 10th. The day will begin with the 1PM football game against Scott with a reception following in the CCH cafeteria. Steve Flesch will be the reunion’s special guest.

Mike Schlotman was raised in Park Hills by his parents Jack & Jean Schlotman. Mike grew up with his two broth-ers, Tom ’74 and Tim ’79. While attending Covington Catholic High School, Mike participated in many clubs, sports and activities. He was a member of the National Honor Society as a senior, and participated in track and field his freshman, sopho-more and senior years, as well as intramurals all four years and cross country his senior year.

In 1979 Mike graduated from UK with a BS degree in accounting and married his wife Teri Van Pelt, who also went to UK. Mike and Teri have a son Kyle, a 2003 alum of St. Henry High School who graduated from the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University in 2008.

Mike’s first job out of college was working for Coopers and Lybrand in Louisville in 1979. In 1981 he was transferred to Cincinnati and stayed with the company until 1985 when he left to join the Kroger Co. He served in various positions in corporate accounting until 1995 when he was elected Vice President and Corporate Controller. He continued his climb up the corporate ladder and in January of 2000 was named Group Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Since June 2003, he has con-tinued his illustrious career at Kroger’s where he currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mike also finds time to serve on the Board of Directors for the Ohio National Financial Services, Inc.

When asked who influenced him the most while at Covington Catholic Mike did not hesitate to answer –Mr. Jack Kaelin. His famous or infamous excuse list taught the students that excuses were not reasons for poor performance; they were just excuses for it. When asked what his “best memory” was he replied, “my senior year the Kentucky Post proclaimed “trackless Cov Cath claims regional track title.” This was when the track team practiced in the parking lot.

1961 The annual cookout will be Saturday, October 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Rich Detzel’s Nature Academy in Corinth, KY. Please contact Jerry Biedenharn (859) 356-5927 for more information.

1961 Joe Schmidt retired from the Little Soap and Candle Company in Cincinnati (called P&G) in 1999 after 37 years. He worked in the Information Systems department. He has been married to his wife, Ginny, for 45.95 years (according to Joe). Besides sons Mike ’82 and Tom ’83, they have a daughter, Nancy, and five grandchildren. Joe helped start a Yahoo group for the Class of ’61 after their 45th reunion.

1973 Phil Schworer participated in the Cincinnati Arts Associations’ Dancing For The Stars, a benefit for the Overture Awards and Academy, on May 23rd at the Music Hall ballroom. He and his professional dance partner, Bonita Brockert, took first place in the competition. The event raised $20,000.

Phil gave the commencement address at the Northern Kentucky University, Salmon P. Chase College of Law graduation ceremony on May 9th. Following the speech, NKU’s President, James Votruba and Chase Law School’s Dean, Dennis Honabach, presented Phil with an honorary Doctor of Law degree to recognize his exemplary leadership and service to the bar and the community.

1979 Dave Topmiller quit his job and went to law school, after having worked for 20 years as an electrical design engineer. He graduated in May of 2008 and is currently employed by Dinsmore and Shohl as an associate in the intellectual property department. He and his wife, Jane, and children, Angela and Kevin, reside in Edgewood . He is looking forward to his 30th reunion.

1990 David Tabeling and his wife, Lisa, celebrated the birth of their third daughter, Caroline on August 21st. Big sisters Katherine and Elizabeth are thrilled. No future Colonels yet!!!! David is an optometrist with his own practice. He can be reached at dltabescfuse.net.

1992 Rick Lohre in 2008, after 11 years at Procter & Gamble in product design and development, left to pursue his lifelong dream. He opened a commercial photography studio that just celebrated its first year in operation. Rick specializes in Product and Active Lifestyle advertising photography. He recently completed projects for 3M, the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund, Muscle & Fitness, FLEX, and Campbell Hausfeld to name a few. 1993 Keith Collins and his wife, Amy, would like to announce the birth of their second child, Kyle Michael. Kyle was born on October 28th. Three days later, on Halloween, he had open heart surgery to correct three heart defects. It was an eight hour operation and Kyle

fought like a champ the whole way through. He went in for his six month echocardiogram and ekg in April and to the delight of the surgeons at Childrens Hospital, he is doing awesome. They even told the family that they normally do another echo at the 1 year birthday, but since he is doing so well, there is no need. He is 21 lbs and 28” long. He is a very big boy and hopes to be a Colonel one day. Thank you to all who kept him in their prayers during that very tense time.

1993 Michael Hild began Live Well Financial, a reverse mortgage lender in 2005. His company has since become one of the fastest growing reverse mortgage lenders in the nation. He and his wife, Laura, reside in Richmond, Virginia.

1994 Matt Weber and his wife, Chris, welcomed Michael Joseph on October 16th. He is joined by big sister, Anne, who turned two May 1st. Matt is the President of Matthew J. Weber Contracting, Inc.

1994 Tony Ward and his wife, Suzie, would like to announce the birth of their son, Evan Christopher, who was born on November 6th.

1995 Tony Barczak and his wife, Christie, welcomed Anna Marie into the world on March 24th at 12:23 p.m. Everyone is happy and healthy.

1995 Chris Eibel and his wife, Laura, would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Olivia Ryan, who was born on March 22nd.

1995 Zach Holbrook and his wife, Micaela, welcomed Phineas Fitzgerald at 6:42 p.m…..just after the post time for the Derby, May 2nd . He was 9.3 lbs. and 21” long. Big sister, Sasha, was a bit skeptical about baby Phin at first. She did not like having to share Mommy and Daddy but she has adjusted.

1995 Jason Neiser received his Doctorate degree in Physics from Rochester University and is now teaching Physics at Centre College.

1995 Kevin Overmann and his wife, Kelli, are proud parents of their first child, Jacob who was born on April 13th. They are living in San Diego, CA. Both mother and son are doing well.

1997 Justin Overmann and his wife, Lauren, welcomed twin girls, Alexis & Samantha, born March 12th. They join big sister, Carlee, who is two years old. They live in Villa Hills. Everyone is doing well.

1997 Brad Wilder and his wife, Nicole, are the proud parents of Luke Donald (Class of 2027). He was born at St. Elizabeth Medical Center on February 4th at 7:46 p.m. weighing in at 7lbs. 9oz and was 21” long.

Brad came in second in the Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championship golf tournament on June 26th. He was runner-up to Robert Gerwin II who, had finished second in the Met last year. This was the first year that Brad made it past the quarterfinal round.

1998 Lee Knasel married Amanda on November 1st of this past year. The happy couple are expecting their first child December 5th of this year.

1998 Jason Thomas and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed Savannah Rose into the world on August 28th. Jason is currently working at Belcan Engineering in Lexington, KY.

1999 Matthew Dirheimer received his Class IV water operator license and works for the Northern Kentucky Water District. He recently ran in the Flying Pig Marathon where he finished the 22.6 miles in four hours….way to go. When he’s not running or working, he finds time to volunteer at the Welcome House.

1999 Tony Frank and his wife, Courtney, had a healthy baby girl, Charlie Bella Frank, on June 15th. She weighed 7lbs. 3oz. Just in time for Father’s Day.

2000 Jon Westerman and wife, Libby, were blessed with a baby girl on May 15, 2008. Julianna weighed in at 7lbs 2 oz. Jon is employed at Western Southern Life Insurance and is a CPA. He and his wife live in Florence.

2001 Andrew Middendorf, and his wife, Olivia, are proud to announce Lydia Ann who was born on January 21st . She weighed 8lbs. and 2oz.

2002 Chris Berling married Cara Weckenbrock on May 30th at St. Agnes. The reception was held at Twin Oaks Plantation and Golf Course. Colonels in the wedding were: Ben Berling ’97, Paul Berling ’98, Mike Weckenbrock ’00, John Bessler ’02, Jeff Lubbers ’02 and Chad Bray ’02.

2002 Matt Collett graduated from Florida Coastal School of Law this past spring.

2004 Adam Hock was recently featured in the Enquirer about his pursuit of becoming a professional Bass fisherman. He recently graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in civil engineering.

2004 Matt Nestheide married Traci Fugate of Newport Central Catholic on May 30th at St. Rose in Cincinnati. Colonels in the wedding party were: Joseph Sutton ‘04, Matt Deacon ’04 and Alan Flood ‘09

2005 Andrew Noll graduated from Vanderbilt with a double major in engineering and music. He was recently accepted into Harvard Medical School.

2006 Danny Noll was selected to the first-team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in basketball. He helped lead Centre to a 23-5 record and the NCAA Division III Tournament this past season. He is currently majoring in economics with plans of going to dental school.

2006 A.J. Schreiver, Chris Farrell, Matthew Reis ’07 & Nick Warning ’07 helped lead the University of Kentucky baseball team to a second National Club Baseball Association World Series title. Schreiver played second

Kevin Lonneman ’01 CCH Youth Football coach, had to do some measuring for the new railing around the CCH football field Sunday morning June 28th, or at least that is what he told his girlfriend Ali Fritz. Once they arrived in the grotto, he unrolled a set of plans. The first page read the Lonneman family plan; stage one find the girl, stage two fall madly in love, stage three marriage, then at stage four Ali read “will you marry me?” Ali is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and its grotto has a tradition of being a place for proposals. Kevin could not go to South Bend so the grotto at CCH was the next best thing! She graciously accepted and plans for the wedding are already moving along. The date is June 12, 2012 at St Agnes. Congratulations! One other note - they met last fall at a CCH retreat!

The 31st Annual Alumni 5K Race is just around the corner so get out your running shoes. This year it will take place in Devou Park on

Thursday, August 13th at 6:30 pm. You do not have to be a cross country alum to participate and even if you have no intention of running, please come out to see some friendly faces and have some fun. The race will start at the Volpenhein Pavilion, which is adjacent to the Drees Pavilion. Alumni, parents and friends are invited to participate. The 2008 winner was Cov Cath student James Simms (Class of 2010) with a time of 17:43. Don’t forget to fill out your card at the end of the race and turn it in so we can track the results in the next newslet-ter. Development Office - Please join me in welcoming the newest mem-ber of our team Mrs. Annette Restle. Her responsibilities will include or-ganizing reunions, address changes, endowment and other payment pro-cedures along with assisting with our fundraising events. Annette is not new to Covington Catholic High School. Her family consists of hus-band Randall and six children. Her son Kyle graduated from CCH this past year. Cole will be a freshman this fall. Other family members are Hillary, who is a senior at the Univer-sity of Louisville, Audrey, a junior at Notre Dame Academy, and her youngest two daughters Grace and Lillian both of whom attend Blessed Sacrament. Annette stood out from the other applicants because of her experience and job responsibilities at the Cathedral Foundation in Cov-ington. There she helped organize events, maintained a database of do-nors and processed mailings.

Thanks to Mr. Bill Snyder for all of his hard work and dedication this spring in the alumni department. Next year he will be returning to the classroom full-time. Arthur G. Bohman, 84, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2009 at his home.

Art grew up on 6th street in Covington next to Covington Catholic when it was next door to Mother of God. In high school he did not play sports because there were no organized sport teams at that time. The 1943 yearbook had this to say about Art, “He was a class officer for three years. His favorite subject was geometry. Outside of school his interests settled around baseball and until the war interfered, he was scheduled to go to one of the St Louis Cardinals farm teams as a pitcher.” Instead he went into the Air Force as a radio operator /gunner on a B-24 bomber, which flew numerous missions over Germany.

After the war, Coach Bohman started the first baseball team at CCH in 1946. He then left to play in Louisville, Ky. for the Norman & Barnes team. From this team, he was drafted by the Yankees and at the same time the Reds were looking at him. The Reds ended up offering him a contract but the Yankees would not release him. He re-ported to Joplin Mo. in 1946. Art started the last game of the season. He threw a perfect game through five innings and then was pulled out of the game. He continued pitching the following year, winning 16 games. In 1948, Art moved to Quincy Il., where he also won 16 games, as did his roommate, Lew Burdette, who went on to become the 1956 MVP for the Milwau-kee Braves. In 1949, he moved to Kansas City, Mo. which then led to Binghamton, NY. Art ended his career in Muskegon, NY. in 1951 when the injuries to his arm started to effect his pitching. In 1950, Art starting coaching the basketball team at Covington Catholic. He coached the basketball team for five seasons following Coach Ed Kennedy ’34. During his coaching career at Covington Catholic, he also helped baseball pitchers Tiny Steffen’ 60 and Ron Roland ’51, who are both in the CCH Hall of Fame. In 1954, Art started working the clock at Covington Catholic basketball games, a duty he continued to do for almost 40 years!

When he was not volunteering his time to Covington Catholic, Art was an insurance investigator, as well as a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and Ft. Mitchell Prayer Group. His wife, Jane Boylson Bohman, died in July of 2006.

Survivors include his daughters, Cheryl Nanberg of Scottsdale, Ariz., Janet Lange of Chesterfield, Mo. and Nancy Ryan of Florence; brother, Richard Bohman of Edgewood; sisters, Alberta Robinson of Edgewood and Lorraine Bohman of Fort Wright; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

We are saddened by the news of Art’s passing but are truly blessed to have had him at Covington Catholic all those years. May you rest in peace, Art.

Jay McCoy Children’s Trust FundJay McCoy ’86 passed away January 1st of this year of a heart attack. He had a previous heart attack

several years ago and had bypass surgery. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, and two young daughters, Karlyn (12) and Kelcie (8). They are taking things day by day and appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. The kids have been staying busy this summer with basketball camps, swimming and a vacation to Gulf Shores with family but they miss their Dad very much and each day is a struggle.
