WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OFTHE CUBE MAGAZINE

I hope that this magazine will give you an exclusive peek inside the ‘jewellery box’ that is The Cube, shining a light on the gems inside, from elegant restaurants to sleek, ultra-modern office space.

Having worked on The Cube since its conception in 2005, this autumn, six years on sees this exciting new development come to life. Celebrity hairdresser and TV personality Adee Phelan brings his brand of award-winning artistry to his home city of Birmingham, with a new state-of-the-art salon: you’ll find a fascinating interview with Adee in these pages, plus amazing introductory offers to enjoy at his salon.

With overwhelming demand for The Cube apartments, the message is clear – don’t be disappointed, get in and reserve yours quickly! In this issue, you’ll find plenty of information about the cutting-edge design features and flexible space on offer. The ultimate in city living. That goes for

office space too: with in excess of 800 people in the building already happily settled in, The Cube is rapidly becoming well-known for its sustainable, energy-efficient and future-proofed facilities with secure parking.

Adee is not the only star to sign up to The Cube: Marco Pierre White opens his rooftop restaurant in December, and in the next issue we’ll have lots more detail to share on what’s set to be Birmingham’s most sought-after dining spot. Look out for the fabulous competition on page 27, with a chance to win dinner at Marco’s, plus an overnight stay at Hotel Indigo.

With the new Hotel Indigo, Spa and Private Member’s Club all about to open, The Cube is so much more than a city landmark: it’s the only place to be.

Neil Edginton, director at The Cube

The Cube is the architectural masterpiece that’s got all of Birmingham talking: an iconic building that dominates the city skyline with its bold design and striking beauty.

ADEEPHELAN

THE SALONCutting-edge and seriously stylish, you may know Adee Phelan as the man behind the Beckham Mohawk, or from his many TV appearances, from The Salon to I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! Now, King’s Heath boy Adee’s returning to his home city to launch an exclusive hair salon in The Cube.

Charismatic Adee has taken a hands-on role in the creation of the canal-side luxury salon, rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty with the rest of the team. Describing himself as “an architect: a designer who happens to cut people’s hair”, this stylist to the A list is also making The Cube his home in a fabulous penthouse apartment.

You’ve lived and worked in London’s Covent Garden for the best part of your hairdressing career. Why have you come back to your Birmingham roots? I always said that if I ever did anything in Birmingham it would have to be on a major scale and it would have to be in an iconic building. Let’s face it, The Cube is an amazing building.

One of your best friends, Marco Pierre White is a fellow patron, choosing The Cube’s rooftop as the location for his new restaurant. Did you know of this before you decided to take up space in The Cube yourself? The fact that Marco was taking some space in The Cube played a big part in my decision to invest. I trust his judgment. He’s like a father-figure to me. He was definitely my inspiration for coming back to Birmingham. Birmingham has changed so much over the last few years. The mix of new restaurants, salons and bars has dramatically transformed

Birmingham. ere have been some fantastic buildings built around Birmingham in recent years, and e Cube is now one of them.

Back in 2002, you shot to fame when you created the dramatic Mohawk style for David Beckham. e look made headlines all over the world and you joined the ranks of celebrity hairdressers overnight. What was that like for you? It was a crazy time! Men were ying in from Japan asking me to give them the Beckham haircut! David and I sat down and decided on the Mohawk style between us, during a proper consultation. He said, ‘If I don’t like it, I’ll shave it o !’. Luckily, he liked it.

You have an impressive client list, including Girls Aloud, Catherine Tate and Piers Morgan. How do you maintain your bond with your clients? It’s all about giving clients the deluxe experience. I’m never going to be a billionaire hairdresser because I don’t believe in half an hour haircuts. I don’t believe in 45-minute haircuts. I believe in hour-long haircuts. I believe in great consultations. People only go to the hairdressers once every ten weeks as a treat. It’s our job to treat these people and provide them with a service they will remember. As well as a traditional haircut, at the salon you will also be able to get a makeover and star in your own photoshoot in the specially designed photographic studio. We’ll be doing makeovers, portfolios, portraits and family portraits, all at the salon. ere will be di erent furniture so di erent shoots can have di erent themes.

Another feature that sets the Adee Phelan salon apart from others is the groundbreaking HIS Hair Loss Clinic. What exactly does this involve? It’s a facility that we’ll be o ering to men who are losing their hair. It’s a form of tattoo. ey use di erent pigments to match your existing hair so that it looks completely natural. Come to the new salon at e Cube and you can expect a top quality experience. All of my clients will get the VIP treatment. Whether you’re a David Beckham type or someone who just wants a good haircut, you will get the same VIP treatment. Right down to the co ee, the cups and saucers, the reception area and text messaging service for your appointments. We remember what our clients like. If you order tea with one sugar on your rst visit, a cup of tea with one sugar will be waiting for you on your second.

Whose hair would you love to get your hands on? I’d love to get my hands on Jonathan Ross’s oppy hair.

• For amazing introductory off ers at Adee’s salon - including makeovers and the chance to have a consultation with Adee himself - turn to page 14.

As well as graceful design and space, the apartments give residents access to a 24-hour concierge service and fully automated car park, from where you can ride the lift straight up to your new apartment floor. With designer kitchens by Poggenpohl, appliances by Bosch, bathrooms by Villeroy & Boch and fitments by Hansgrohe, the interiors are all about pure style.

Residents will benefit from exclusive offers from some of The Cube’s other establishments.

If you manage to get your hands on a luxury apartment at The Cube, choosing the décor for your beautiful new home can be daunting. The Cube has teamed up with Castle Fine Art Galleries in the International Convention Centre to provide a series of bespoke art packages exclusively to

residents of The Cube. Choose from five themes: figurative, cityscape, contemporary, icons and landscape, or choose from a specific ‘new homebuyers’ package which features ten pieces from The Cube’s show apartment.

Beth McCarthy, manager of Castle Fine Arts says: “We are thrilled to be able to offer residents of The Cube our bespoke art packages for their homes. The Cube has made a real artistic and architectural statement in the west side of Birmingham, and with our art, we hope to help residents do the same in their homes.”

THE ART

OF CUBISMAWARD-WINNING GRAFFITI ARTIST TEMPER CREATED THE LOVELY PEOPLE, THE STRIKING ADDITION TO THE

CUBE’S COURTYARD

Arron Bird, aka Temper, has received commissions from football billionaire Roman Abramovich, former England striker Ian Wright and former Birmingham City player

Robbie Savage, amongst others, but for his latest project and first foray into sculpture, he was simply inspired by

the people of Birmingham.

The Lovely People features seven life-size bronze figures of local citizens, their stories being immortalised in artwork. The people behind the figures include a West Midlands firefighter who has been awarded a George Cross, a woman who survived the Holocaust, a Prince’s Trust counsellor and one of Birmingham’s most well-known businessmen.

Temper’s West Midlands roots are well documented, so it is only natural that he should be showcasing his latest work on home ground. Not only do the sculptures provide a permanent focus to Wharfside Street, which runs through the centre of The Cube, but they also capture an imaginative set of stories inspired by the people of Birmingham.Temper, who’s worked with legends including Saatchi & Saatchi and Coca Cola commented on his work: “The Lovely People has been a fantastic creative journey, during which time I’ve had the opportunity to hear many fascinating stories from people in the

region and explore the exciting world of architecture and sculpture.

“The piece is about measuring people on the size of their hearts, not on their physical appearance. On each sculpture I have designed the hearts so you can see your own reflection in them, so people are seeing themselves in every lovely person.”

Ken’s creative vision has now become real life, as e Cube opens its doors to the public with the rst in a stream of commercial outlet launches, starting this month.

Creating more than 42,000 square metres of accommodation and housing a vibrant combination of bars, restaurants, o ces, apartments a hotel, private members club and spa, e Cube has successfully combined innovation with impact.

Drawing on the city’s jewellery making heritage, Shuttleworth saw the concept as ‘an enchanting jewellery box’ su used with light and colour. e design encompasses an asymmetric lightwell that twists as it rises upwards through the building, slicing through the oorplates and

drawing in the maximum amount of natural light deep into the heart of the building. e e ect makes for striking interior and exterior spaces.

e modular system of metal and glass panels on the outside of the building creates a strong geometric pattern, making the building noticeable from miles around, with a distinctive glass ‘crown’ that will house Marco Pierre White’s spectacular rooftop restaurant .

Joining a host of new iconic architecture arriving in the city, e Cube now sits proudly alongside distinctive buildings such as Selfridges and the new Central Library, compounding the city’s reputation for passionate and visionary development.

Whether you work at e Cube, in Birmingham city centre or further a eld, e Cube car park provides the ultimate o ering in car parking. Just a short walk to New Street Station, a journey time of approximately 1½ hours to London Euston and with connections to Birmingham International Airport, convenience is an understatement.

In keeping with the rest of the distinctive building, the three-storey underground car park at e Cube is innovative and ultra-modern. It’s also the largest of its kind in the UK, and probably the safest way to park in Birmingham. Streamline your working day

with the easy, swift state-of-the-art stacking system of car parking.

e high-tech scheme works like this: registered users park their car in one of four transfer garages where it is scanned and transported vertically to the parking area using an automated lift. A pallet-less conveyor system – the rst in the UK - then shuttles the car to an empty parking space, placing it neatly and safely on an underground concrete shelf.

On returning to the car park, drivers simply scan their pass at the transfer garage and their car is promptly brought back, turned around, ready to get in and drive away.

Highways Agency was the first tenant to move into The Cube, taking residence across floors 9-11, with their main reception on 11th floor. The location of the Highways Agency means it can enjoy the stunning views of the city as well as the spacious layouts designed specifically for the needs of its large organisation.

Director of Highways Agency, Richard Wilson, had set criteria in mind: “An opportunity came up for us to move offices and after viewing a number of premises in the city, we decided on The Cube. Not only did the building offer a cost effective option, but we were also impressed with what it offered in terms of creating a more efficient working environment.

“Since moving in, team work has improved with staff commenting positively on the new open-plan design. We’ve also introduced a hot-desking system which involves team members sharing desks around the office, enabling colleagues more opportunity to get to know each other.”

Proving that The Cube’s commercial space can cater for all sizes and types of business, the IBI Group has moved in to a bespoke unit on the 8th floor. At the other end of the scale from the Highways Agency, IBI has around nine members of staff. The multi-disciplinary consultancy firm enlisted help from their architectural colleagues in Canada, designing their office space and customising it to suit their requirements.

The open-plan design of the IBI Group’s office offers high capacity, flexible meeting rooms and hot-desking space. Technical Consultant for IBI, Gareth Tyler, explains: “The team is really excited to be here, especially with The Cube coming to life week by week. Architecture is one of IBI’s specialisms and we regularly have clients visiting from across the country. We are particularly looking forward to taking clients to the stunning Marco Pierre White rooftop restaurant when it opens.”

SIZE MATTERS. WHY BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES ARE MAKING THE CUBE THEIR HOME

Not just commercial space: The Cube’s breathtaking beauty, unbeatable views and plentiful, flexible layout offer businesses an

irresistible package. The Cube has excellent credentials when it comes to energy efficiency and boasts a convenient city centre address, as well as safe and secure underground parking.
