Narrative Structure

• This documentary has a linear narrative structure, it relived the murder incident of 3 girls and a nun and how it was resolved. Marylyn Manson was blamed for his explicit music expressing his hate for god and stating that he was the Devil. He had many fans and some extremist fans. The fans listened to Manson and respected his opinion on religion, that much so that the listened to him over their parents. His performances influenced his fans so much that it was thought that he was what drove the 3 girls to murder an innocent nun.

Camera Work

• The camera work in this documentary is very artistic; this means they use a lot of different angles to set the scene. Many reconstructions are used in this documentary as they do not have original footage of what happened, this gives the audience a clue as to what it would have looked like in the same environment and situation.

Mise-en-Scene• The mise-en-scene in this documentary has a massive impact on

people’s opinions. They have used surrounding that suit each part of the doc, such as churches, city lights etc. An example of the mise-en-scene is how youths are portrayed to the audience. The interview with tree youths shows a male lay slouched on a bed with two girls around him looking as if they do not care about the incident, also they are smoking and generally don’t look like they should in an interview situation. This paints a bad picture of youths in general and people will have seen the stereotype of teenagers, lazy, careless, dangerous ad rude. The use of religious paraphernalia tells the story without any real footage of the murder or what actually happened.

Sound• In this documentary they used many different types of music

to set the environment in a particular scene. The two main music themes were religious songs, church bells etc. The second was dark rock music, such as Marylyn Manson’s music. They focused on lyrics of Marylyn’s music which linked in to the murder investigation as he was a big influence on the youths at this time. In parts of the documentary such as the recreation of the murder scene, the used voice over of the girls confessing, almost as if they were narrating what was happening.

Editing• The editing in this documentary uses slow paced ad faced

paced editing. Slow paced for scenes involved the murder scene, and fast paced when watching archive material of Marilyn Manson’s concert. They have used long takes when showing reconstructions of the murder to add effect. The editing used during the investigation was slow paced because the investigation was difficult and took a long time to solve. They used cutaways in the interviews to switch from person to person and hear each of their opinions all at once to give an overall opinion to the audience.
