  • Supplement newsletter to the 78rpm Collectors Community - www.78rpmcommunity.com

The 78rpm Collectors Community is a social network for collectors of 78rpm recordings, phonographs, memorabilia, recording machines and the history of

the 78rpm recording era. It's like FaceBook - but for collectors of all things 78rpm related.

    WelcomeWow!

The response to our first newsletter in this new format was unexpected and overwhelming. I received almost one hundred emails from members requesting a hard copy and many emails were supportive of this new endeavor. This second newsletter

has been extended further to feature 140 pages. It covers a variety of topics related to 78rpms - and features the discographies of Dick Todd and Enrico Caruso to name but two. This larger format allows us to explore more topics, include extensive 78rpm discographies and cover content on our site that would otherwise be lost or missed.

This newsletter features a heap of interesting and diverse discographies or part-

  • discographies of both classical and popular related musicians, performers and music.

Of particular interest this edition is an extensive discography on the singer, Dick Todd, an active performer during the 1930s - 1950s. An often neglected performer, he was compared to Bing Crosby at the height of his singing career and had the nickname of the Canadian Crosby. He became a favorite with radio listeners across the United States during the 1940s. He recorded such hits as "You're The Only Star In My Blue Heaven", "It's A Hap-Hap-Happy Day" and "Blue Orchids". [See page 32].

This meticulously researched discography is gratefully provided by Doug Hamilton. Doug is from NSW, Australia. His extensive interests include research into 78rpms and genealogy.

There is also a preliminary discography that covers recordings that Nicolas Medtner made for HMV during the 1940s and released on the 78rpm format.

We also begin the first in a series featuring the Columbia (UK) LX series of light/serious classical music. The first 400 recordings is outlined. [See page 93]. The promised next 500, 78rpms from the REX label is being held over for issue 3 - December 2013 newsletter due to space restrictions.

By the way, please take a moment (if you havent already) to check out our 78rpm Search Index - www.78rpmcommunity.com/searchindex which indexes over 100,000, 78rpms from the major record labels of the time - including HMV, Columbia, Victor, Brunswick, Bluebird, Columbia Musicraft,Harmony, Edison, Rex, Capitol, oKeh, Vocalion, MGM, Regal, Paramount and many others.

website. It lets you search via record number, performer, composition and year of recording with relative ease and returns results quickly and in a no-fuss manner.

Great for compiling performer lists. Just type a performers name in the search box and the index will return all recordings by that performer!

  • Medtner on 78rpm

A younger contemporary of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin, Nocolas Medtner wrote a substantial number of compositions, all of which include the piano. His works include fourteen piano sonatas, three violin sonatas, three piano concerti, a piano quintet, three works for two pianos, many shorter piano pieces, and 108 songs including two substantial works for vocalise. His 38 Skazki (generally known as "Fairy Tales" in English but more correctly translated as "Tales") for piano solo contain some of his most original music and are as central to his output as the piano sonatas.

Medtner first took piano lessons from his mother until the age of ten. He also

had lessons from his mother's brother Fyodor Goedicke (the father of his more famous cousin Alexander Goedicke). Then he entered the Moscow Conservatory. He graduated in 1900 at the age of 20, taking the Anton Rubinstein prize, having studied under Pavel Pabst, Wassily Sapellnikoff, Vasily Safonov and Sergei Taneyev among others. Despite his conservative musical tastes, Medtner's compositions and his pianism were highly regarded by his contemporaries. To the consternation of his family, but with the support of his former teacher Taneyev, he soon rejected a career as a performer and turned to composition, partly inspired by the intellectual challenge of Ludwig van Beethoven's late piano sonatas and string quartets. Among his students in this period was Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov.

Unlike his friend Rachmaninoff, Medtner did not leave Russia until well after the Revolution. Rachmaninoff secured Medtner a tour of the United States and Canada in 1924; his recitals were often all-Medtner evenings consisting of sonatas interspersed with songs and shorter pieces. Medtner never adapted himself to the commercial aspects of touring and his concerts became infrequent. Esteemed in England, he and Anna, his wife, settled in London in 1936, modestly teaching, playing and composing to a strict daily routine.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Medtner's income from German publishers disappeared, and during this hardship ill-health became an increasing problem.

In 1949 a Medtner Society was founded in London by His Highness Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur, the Maharajah of Mysore (the princely state in southern India). The Maharajah was an honorary Fellow of Trinity College of Music, London, in

  • 1945 and also the first president of the Philharmonia Concert Society, London. He founded the Medtner Society to record all of Medtner's works. Medtner, already in declining health, recorded his three Piano Concertos and some sonatas, chamber music, numerous songs and shorter works before his death in London in 1951. In one of these recordings he partnered Benno Moiseiwitsch in his two-piano work entitled "Russian Round-Dance", Op 58, No.1; in another he accompanied Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in several of his lieder, including The Muse, a Pushkin setting from 1913 (Columbia LX series). In gratitude to his patron, Medtner dedicated his Third Piano Concerto to the Maharajah of Mysore.

Medtner died at his home, 69 Wentworth Road, Golders Green, London in 1951, and is buried alongside his brother Emil in Hendon Cemetery.

  • The Edison LabelWritten and Prepared by Wes Williams

In 1904 Edison USA established its own company in London, and distribution rights were lost.

In 1909, Edison Bell and its subsidiary company were purchased by J.E.Hough Ltd. Edison Bell had already established a disc and cylinder manufacturing site at Peckham, South London, and continued to issue discs under the Edison Bell name until late 1912. It also issued discs under the 'Velvet Face' label into the mid 1920s. Other label names were Radio and Electron.

"The Winner" label was announced in December 1911, with the first list of records announced in January 1912. It was advertised as being owned by a syndicate, with

the address given as that of J.E. Hough Ltd. The earliest labels featured colored representations of a horse and jockey, and there are many variations.

The Discographer Newsletter - Number 2

    October 2013 / 8

  • The name was changed to "Winner", and the label changed to a gold

drawing of horse and jockey on a claret background about mid 1922.

In March 1926 the horse and jockey label was abandoned, and the name changed to "Edison Bell Winner".

J.E. Hough Ltd. became a public company in May 1926, and the label was changed to show a new name: Edison Bell Limited London & Huntingdon. The first electrical recording to be released was number 4386 in April 1926, but

The Discographer Newsletter - Number 2

  • this was from American Paramount masters. The first electrical recording from Edison Bell's own masters was number 4444 in July 1926.

By 1929 the business was making losses, and in January 1933 the company was wound up. No offers for the company were received, and most of the remaining assets were eventually taken over by Decca. Decca gained a concession in 1933 to continue to release Winner records for a short time afterwards, including a new series

prefixed W, while Edison Bell itself struggled on until 1938, when it was liquidated. The last Edison Bell records were issued in January 1935.

You have a great new format for the Newsletter. Many congratulations!!

A suggestion, when formulating the Discographies please try to insert as much information as possible regarding the recording date and other info such as recording location, engineer, producer etc. Surely so much of this must be to hand as a result of compiling all that has been done.

  • Restoring 78rpms - Part 2The first part of this article can be found in the August 2013 edition of the Discographer - Pages 28-29

Time Considerations:The sound engineer whether amateur or professional is always limited by the resources at hand both software and often hardware. Compound this with the limitations of the original source material scratchy 78s, transcription discs or worse and the transferrer of 78s can spend hours if not days at repairing or restoring old forgotten 78s.

For example, Damian Rogan, who runs the website, www.damians78s.co.uk, reports that time spent restoring a 78 can depend onmultiple factors.it very much depends on the age of the recording and the condition of the record, which may often be closely linked. He goes on to add, Some 78s may be in excellent condition (especially if theyre fairly late 78s) and respond very easily to restoration: fairly decent transfers can be made in a couple of hours. Very old records tend to have many clicks to be removed, and can have

other issues to be dealt with. There are times when just de-clicking one side of a 12 record can take two hours or more especially if the record is fractured or gouged. There are some that Ive had to play multiple times in order to catch all the damaged grooves so I can then stitch the side together properly. After that, all the other parts of the process increase the overall time. Sometimes it can take a considerable amount of time to hunt down another recording or a score of a work in order to find out what key its likely to be in, and therefore what speed adjustments need to be carried out. This is a particular issue with English Columbias around the 1926-28, where speeds could vary across a side.

While restoring 78s can be time-consuming, another restorer Bill Anderson; a member of the 78rpm Collectors Community; suggests anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes per record side as a guide. When you consider that some 78rpm sets cover six or eight sides the total

The Discographer Newsletter - Number 2

    October 2013 / 20

  • time spent transferring and restoring a recording can be quite time-consuming but the rewards can be very encouraging.

For many, transferring a long-forgotten 78rpm may in fact be its first airing since it was pressed over 50 or more years ago. With record companies reluctant to transfer, restore and reissue their vast 78rpmholdings; due to many factors, including a perceived limited buying cliental, damaged holdings, changes in music tastes over the past few years and the limited machinery available to play many of these recordings in the first place its no wonder that the process has often been left to amateurs, hobbyists and small labels; like Pristine Audio; to delve into the vast, forgotten music opus of 78rpm recordings.

For many, however, it affords a chance to start new businesses; coupled with the internets ability to offer downloadable recordings and streaming; as well as re-introduce to a new, and younger audience a vast array of interesting, forgotten musical heritage.

The Human Touch:In many cases, the restorer must work within the limitations of the original recording which can lie as far back in the recording process as the recording process itself. Early recordings were primitively recorded and used inconsistent

standards within a company and country. Early cutter heads were highly inefficient. 1 Variations in speed, pitch, groove widths and record composition makes the task of transferring a record, more or less, a case of detective work.

Essentially, it comes down to what sounds right to the ear, how much of the recording should be removed with filters and how much should be added, for example, reverberation.

As one restorer suggests, you have the broad-spectrum surface noise from the playback process. This is the one very tricky area where an engineer can ruin a recording if he does it wrong. The problem is that since the noise is broad spectrum, an engineer can slice off ambient noise from the program material as well as the noise.

Of course, this can also work in reverse by adding additional information to the digital signal. But in all cases, there comes a point at which a sound engineer must decide how much tampering is required and stop.

Damian Rogan adds: In terms of equalization, Im very much an interventionist. Recordings can be made to sound much more natural with equalization that goes beyond the basic turnover and rolloff. In particular this has a huge impact on acoustic recordings (where traditionally no equalization is applied). However, this can result in

The Discographer Newsletter - Number 2

    October 2013 / 21

  • increased noise particularly at higher frequencies. As Im happy to listen past the noise, I prefer to get a more natural instrumental sound with more noise. It very much comes down to sounding right as you make fine equalization adjustments, you suddenly find the recorded sound becomes more natural.

For other restorers, restoration relies on intuition, but it should be done with awareness of the recording company, the vintage of the discs, and the equalization settings the companies used. In some cases you may know what the recording should sound like due personal knowledge of the venue. Otherwise, written descriptions by engineers, producers, performers, or record critics can be very useful. Finally, discussing the restoration processes with experienced record collectors will give you additional guidance and insights.

So, does it really come down to personal preferences?

The CHARM website, 2 which features a length article on transferring and restoring 78s offers this interesting observation: As to the ethics of [interventualizing], it will be up to you to decide, but there are times when doing nothing about it ruins the performance. What would the original performers have wanted you to do? It is a dilemma, and whatever any one tells you, there is no right or wrong answer. It is right

for the listener who wants it that way, and wrong for the one who does not. One can argue that it is being more faithful to the composers intentions.

  • DICK TODD DISCOGRAPHYPrepared by Doug Hamilton - Version 1a - Updated: Sept 2nd 2013

    Dick Todd. Singer (baritone), b Montreal 4 Aug 1914, d Apr 1973.

He sang at 17 with George Sims' dance band at Belmont Park in Montreal and was subsequently heard on local and national (CBC) radio, the latter with the orchestras of Allan McIver and Lucio Agostini. He moved to New York in 1938. During his heyday, ca 1938-42, Todd was heard on US radio with the Larry Clinton and Artie Shaw orchestras, starred in several variety series - eg, NBC's 'Lower Basin Street,' 'Avalon

Time,' and 'Show Boat' - and recorded extensively for Bluebird.

A husky crooner with a relaxed vocal manner, he was often called the Canadian Crosby and was the subject of the Tommy Dorsey-Bing Crosby 'I wonder where Dick Todd is tonight?' radio comedy-routine. Todd entertained US troops during World War II, sang 1945-6 on CBS radio's 'Your Hit Parade,' then turned to nightclub work that took him on occasion back to Montreal and to Toronto. His career waning, he travelled after 1955 as a circus 'roustabout' and worked in New York as a stagehand, but continued to record sporadically for Decca until 1968. Details of his life after the mid-1970s are not fully known. Todd, who drank heavily and latterly suffered from severe arthritis, is thought to have become a derelict.

More than 200 of his recordings are listed in Sheldon O'Connell's biography Dick Todd: King of the Jukebox (Providence, RI, 1987).

Arthur Richard Todd (August 4, 1914 4/1973) was a Canadian singer, active during the 1930s-1950s. He was nicknamed the Canadian Crosby, and was born in Montreal, where he made some very rare records. He became a favorite with radio listeners across the United States. He recorded such hits as "You're The Only Star In My Blue Heaven", "It's A Hap-Hap-Happy Day" and "Blue Orchids".

Dick Todd was perceived as North America's most accomplished Bing Crosby imitator, emulating him so closely as to become known as the Canadian Crosby (other influences were British vocalist Donald Novis and Canadian crooner Russ Titus). Handsome and husky-voiced, romantic baritone Dick Todd was also dubbed King of the Jukebox. During his brief heyday from 1938-1942, Todd recorded about 200 songs for RCA Victor's Bluebird, enabling him to compete with Decca's main attraction (Crosby)

Dick Todd's story would have made an excellent old-fashioned motion picture, preferably filmed in 16 mm black-and-white. Born on August 4, 1914 on a farm near Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he was the son of a retired military officer who moved the family to Montreal around 1926. Todd played the trumpet and sang, first in school and then at the Belmont Amusement Park with a small band led by George Sims. This led to steady work at a nightclub at Lake Champlain called the Meridian. After lukewarm attempts to earn degrees in agriculture and engineering, Todd directed his energies towards putting songs across over the radio and doing commercials for Maxey Baking Powder. Backed by his own quintet, Todd sang and blew his trumpet on cruise ships in the Caribbean during the tourist season. All of this activity paid off when he found himself signing his first Victor contract in Montreal. In 1936 he recorded several pop tunes including "I'm an Old Cowhand" and "Girl in a Bonnet of Blue". After Sims' group was taken over by Ted Large of the Five Large Brothers, Todd began performing almost exclusively in the broadcast studio backed by orchestras under the direction of Lucio Augustini and Alan McIver. It was these programs, which aired during the years 1937-1938, that enabled Dick Todd to develop a following among radio audiences in the north eastern United States.

Todd's next move was to ditch the trumpet, cross the border in 1938, and begin singing in recording and broadcast studios, churning out a steady stream of popular records under the supervision of Leonard Joy and Eli Oberstein and transmitting his voice to the masses via programs like the Home Town Show, the Magic Key (with Larry Clinton's Orchestra), Old Gold's Melody & Madness (with Robert Benchley and Artie Shaw's Swing Band), and Brown & Williamson's Avalon Time Show (with comedian Red Skelton). He also made the first of several recordings with Dinah Shore and sang with Leo Reisman's Orchestra at the Strand Theatre. In 1940 Dick Todd appeared in the series Showboat with Nadine Connor and Virginia Verrill, with Paul LaValle on the Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street show, and sang "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" in a film short with Richard Hayman. For a while he also hosted his own program. Dick Todd's biggest hits from this period include "Blue Orchids," "Deep Purple," "To You, Sweetheart, Aloha," "All This and Heaven Too," and "The Gaucho Serenade." When it was time for Todd to serve as a Canadian citizen in the Second World War he generously set up Ted Weems' crooner Perry Como as his replacement at Victor.

Afterwards, his career began to slip into a gradual but steady decline that would end in utter obscurity and abject poverty. In 1945 he replaced Lawrence Tibbet on Your Hit Parade and shared the microphone with Joan Edwards, but was given the boot in January 1946 to make way for Johnny Mercer. Not to be deterred, Todd signed on with the Larry Sunbrook Circus, barking endless streams of blarney as Master of Ceremonies and

He spent a lot of time appearing in night clubs, and did manage to make more records, one on a rare red label Sonora 78 in 1947. Another of these, a 1949 recording of "Daddy's Little Girl," achieved something like hit status. Throughout the 1950s his popularity continued to fade and he returned to circus work in 1955 but only as a roustabout. Every once in a while he cut a few singles for Decca. His last known recordings, made in 1968, included "Big Wheel Cannonball," "Pennsylvania Turnpike," and "I Love You." Two disorders that brought him down were chronic alcoholism and debilitating arthritis. He was last seen working as a stagehand among the ropes behind the scenes at the Ed Sullivan Show at the Coliseum and at Studio 50 in New York. From there he is believed to have hit the skids and become a homeless wino. The circumstances, and location of his death have never been established.

  • JIM DAVIDSON DISCOGRAPHYPrepared by Doug Hamilton - Version 1a - Updated: Sept 22nd 2013

In our August 2013 newsletter (page 9-) we featured an extensive Jim Davison discography covering his Sydney output on the Regal label. We have since been kindly offered another, more comprehensive discography of his 78rpm output by Doug Hamilton - which we present

    below...

James Hutchinson Davidson was born in Sydney on 6 August 1902. By 1922, Jim had become a competent drummer in a band lead by Jimmie Elkins.

He worked in this band for some years until the Elkins band disbanded in late 1928. Soon after, five of the Elkins band members (along with Jim)

Davidson became deputy leader under Woods while the band was together for nearly three years at this restaurant. In February 1931 the Ambassadors closed so Jim Davidson and several of the musicians moved to the Oriental Cabaret to perform in Her Majestys Arcade. Davidson soon became the leader. The personnel of the band at this stage was: Ray

Tarrant-tpt/Dudley Cantrell-tbn/Frank McLaughlin-alto sax/Gordon Rawlinson-p/Jim Davidson-drums. Also during this time at the Oriental, the band was also broadcasting on Radio 2FC in Sydney on a part-time basis.

By August 1932 the band had enlarged to ten pieces and a concert was given at Hillier's Cafe, this being one of the first actual jazz concerts to be given in Australia. From all contemporary accounts it was a memorable night. One of those present in the audience was the well known band promoter, J.C. Bendrodt, who after

hearing the band booked them to perform at the Palais Royal. This was the premier dance hall in Sydney
