Message from The Principal

Dear Members of the Marcellin family, Year 12 Finish Our Year 12 Class of 2007 were farewelled at the Valedictory Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Graduation Dinner at the Melbourne Town Hall last Friday night. The evening was a great celebration of the boys’ time with us and all the support their parents have given them during their secondary schooling. At the Melbourne Town Hall the major Awards were granted recognizing outstanding contributions to the life of the College. We wish our Year 12’s all the very best in their exams which begin tomorrow and hope that their results are a true reflection of their work and commitment to studies this year: Strategic Planning 2008 – 2010 As part of our strategic planning process for the next three years, we need parent feedback as to the various aspects of an education at Marcellin. This will assist us in better meeting the needs of the boys over the term of the next strategic plan. To this end, every family will be receiving a survey in the mail which asks parents’ comments of their experience of the school. Whilst families will be provided with a hard copy and a pre-paid envelope for return, the best method of completion is via a web link . http://www.ais.vic.edu.au/limesurvey/index.php?sid=31482&lang=en .The survey itself takes about 10 minutes to complete and we need to hear from parents by 10 November. This is an important chance for parents to have their views heard and I urge everyone to avail themselves of this opportunity. The findings of the parent survey will be published at the beginning of next year as part of the College’s reporting process. Yours sincerely, Mark Merry Principal

Message from The Ministry Office

With great joy on 28 October, 2007 we will celebrate the beatification in Rome of 47 Marist Brothers. Victims of the religious persecutions that took place in Spain during the 1930’s, these men are now recognised by our Church as martyrs, heroic witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

These Brothers are the first Marists martyrs to be beatified. On the day of the ceremony itself, their causes will be joined together with those 451 others whose zeal for the gospel includes two bishops, some married men and women, several secular priests and seminarians, other religious – men and women, laity and young people.

This important moment in the history of the Marist Institute gives all of us an opportunity to unite ourselves with the universal Church in giving thanks for the gift of martyrs, especially among those who share our way of life. The public commitment of our Brothers who will be beatified to live fully and radically the gospel of Jesus Christ as the plan of their life brought them to the point of the cross. In embracing this journey as their destiny, each of them also became a seed of new life not only for our Institute and its mission but for our Church universal also.

New units of work which will be studied and assessed in this period in time for the Semester 2 Report. Year 12 Orientation Program All 2008 Year 12 student are required to attend classes from November 26 – 30 inclusive. This is Week One of their Year 12 studies, following the 2008 timetable. After some initial orientation/introductory activity for part of the first lesson the Unit 3 course begins in earnest. It is crucial all of next year’s Unit 3 & 4 students attend. Teachers will familiarise students with the relevant Study Design and assessment, including what is required to excel in SAC’s/SAT’s and exams and their percentage contribution to the overall score. Formal lessons covering the first unit of work and Outcome begin, some initial assessment occurs and meaningful work is set for the holiday period. Naturally, students must com-plete this before returning on 1 February in order to maintain pace with the course and prepare to immediately resume classes, picking up where the Orientation Week concludes.

Peter Houlihan Vice Principal - Learning

On Thursday 25 October, eight students from Year 7 and 8 represented Marcellin College at the Children’s Mission Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Despite the poor weather we were able to join various schools across Victoria in the hope of raising awareness on the importance of missionary work. Reverend Christopher Prowse talked with us about going out at a young age and spreading the word of Christ. He asked us to give our best as Jesus give up his life for us.

Afterwards we were fortunate enough to stop for lunch at a small café. Following some debate it was pies, chips and sausage rolls all round and even though it was still raining we enjoyed each other’s company in the undercover court-yard. The main idea that remained with us was the parting words of Rev. Prowse. He told us that when we give to the poor we should give them our best and to always be proud to be a Catholic.

Daniel De Bortoli ran a great race for second in the Under 17 800m. Daniel Fulton finished 2nd in the Open 110m hur-dles, losing by the narrowest of margins. Our open 3,000m team finished second on points. The team consisted of Mark Poli, Damian Nugent and Joshua De Stefanis. Congratulations to our captain Mark Poli and all other year 12 students who have represented the College so well over a long period of time. Mark along with Damian Nugent, Joshua De Stefanis, Trent Collins and Daniel Fulton have been great athletes for the College and an asset to the team.
