Is Your Home Making You Sick?Jack Kochanski

Most of us know there are serious health risks associated with environmental pollution, but what if the pollution is inside your home?

Toxins could be hiding in the paint on your walls and baseboards, even years after the job was completed.

Traditional paints and solvents give off volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are emitted as gases and include a variety of chemicals such as toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, methylene chloride and glycol. VOC emissions occur during drying in the first few days after painting, however harmful paint fumes can continue to off-gas in your home for years after painting.

Another commonly used product that is highly toxic is a certain putty used to seal cracks and holes in wood. Designed for the automotive industry, this product contains dangerous toxins including lead and is not intended for indoor use. Yet it is found in most paint stores and widely used in the industry.

So how to protect yourself and your family from indoor toxins? Know what your painter is using and what your options are. There are lots of alternative products available that are safer and better for the environment, including low VOC paints. The cost is a bit higher, but it’s well worth it.

sonal friend to be an executor, first make sure they are prepared to take on the responsibility and are comfort-able with making such a commitment. If they live out of town, or if their business or profession won’t allow them the time to devote to your affairs, it may be wise to have a second choice. Another option is to consider appoint-ing more than one executor. Your lawyer, accountant, or business partner can bring the necessary business and administrative skills to augment those of a friend or family member. Keep in mind you’ll need to establish how to resolve disagreements affecting the estate.

Another possibility is to arrange a trust company or law firm that specializes in estate administration to be des-ignated as your executor. For complex estate matters this may be the best course of action. Compensation for their services is usually based on a percentage of the value of the estate.

Simplify the Job AheadFinally; don’t leave your executor with a lot of detective work to perform. Your will, insurance policies, public and private share certificates, investment records, mort-gages, legal and business agreements should be stored in a safe place with its location information and a dupli-

Putting Your Estate in Good Hands

David Rodgers, Financial Advisor

Financial

Planning

Choosing an executor for your estate seems simple enough. A trusted son, daughter, spouse, or maybe a close friend, are all likely candidates. But are you do-ing them an honour or saddling them with a burden? Individuals give a lot of thought to making out their will. They should do the same when choosing an executor.

The executor named in your will is your proxy. Your ex-ecutor stands in your place upon your death and their duties begin immediately upon your death. The process may stretch out for many months after you’re gone (and even years in some cases).

Wanting a family member or a close personal friend to be your executor is natural, but it may not be practical for the following reasons: •people emotionally close to you will be grieving; •while a friend or family member may have your com-

plete trust, their ability to manage your estate may be compromised by lack of business or financial experience; •someone your same age may not outlive you; or •the nomination of one child over another may create

hard feelings between siblings.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Executor Consider some of the financial and legal responsibilities of an executor:

•Register your will with the provincial court. •Prepare a complete inventory of your financial assets

and liabilities and assume responsibility for them. •Deal with various government agencies, banks, credit

card companies, insurance companies, pension ad-ministrators, and other organizations as necessary to finalize and close accounts. •Meet with your creditors and review their claims on

the estate. •File all final tax returns (there can be several), and pay

any capital gains tax owing on your estate’s assets. •Assume control of your investment portfolios, property,

and business interests not covered by a separate will or legal agreement, and arrange for their sale or legal transfer to beneficiaries.

Clearly, reading the will and distributing assets to heirs and beneficiaries is only the last of a series of fiduciary duties. The majority of tasks expected of an executor are administrative. For that reason, an executor out of his or her depth can seriously affect the speed of settling your estate and possibly the value of your estate assets if they are not managed or disposed of properly.

Putting the Right Person in Charge You can do several things to ensure you choose the best executor possible. If you want a family member or per-

cate set of keys made accessible to the executor(s). Also, make a list of your key business and financial advisors with their contact information and areas of responsibil-ity. They can be key resources for your executor as they settle your affairs.

If you need help setting up your estate plan, talk to your financial advisor. You can’t be your own executor, but you can see to it that trusted and qualified people who are familiar with your financial affairs will work together to ensure your beneficiaries and heirs are provided for exactly as you wish.

transParent conciergeIt’s Time We Start Caring for Caregivers

In Canada, seniors make up the fastest growing demographic. Undoubtedly, caregiving and care work are becoming even more essential to Canadian

families and communities. Family caregivers play a critical role in the lives of aging loved ones - a role that can be overwhelming, exhausting and sometimes thankless.

transParent Concierge’s specialized transportation and companion care services are not only beneficial to the seniors that they serve, but can also be very helpful for family caregivers.

“Caregiving isn’t free of risks. Caregivers often face injuries, poor health, social exclusion, financial pain and burnout. When caregivers need relief, transParent Concierge is here to help,” says owner and principal operator of transParent Concierge, Don Peterson.

At the end of the day, caregivers often struggle to tend to their own needs. However, practicing self-care as a caregiver is essential to long-term health and wellness. Here are three things caregivers can do right away to improve their self-care.

Schedule ‘me time’ regularly. For most modern day caregivers, there is a lot to juggle. In addition to caring for a loved one, you are likely working full-time at a 9-5 job. Caregivers become so busy assisting everyone else that they struggle to find time to care for themselves. The definition of me time, and its regularity, will be different for everyone. Do whatever it takes for you to unwind and recharge. Concierge services are an ideal way to free up your time and still get everything done.

Lighten your responsibilities. Developing an organized system will help you do things quickly and efficiently. Why not delegate some of the errands to trained experts? Whether it is a trip to the grocery store, arranging an event, or transportation to an appointment, utilizing concierge services can prevent caregivers from becoming stressed and overwhelmed.

Release your emotions. As a caregiver, you experience all kinds of emotions. Bottling up these feelings will only make things worse. Let go of your emotions by talking to someone who understands what you are going through, or take advantage of one of the many caregiving resources that are available to you. If you have concerns about your ability to be your loved one’s sole caregiver, explore companion care services in your area.

About transParent Concierge transParent Concierge was an idea conceived from the realization that outstanding specialized transportation and exceptional companion care services was needed for our seniors and persons with disabilities. Determined to provide excellent service to all of our clients, transParent Concierge is at your service to provide personalized transportation, companion care services, as well as more traditional concierge services to all of our clients in Calgary, Cochrane, Banff, Canmore and surrounding areas. Being a non-franchised, accredited service provider, we strive to make our services affordable, reliable, and flexible. This very small, compact, buoyant diving duck can be iden-tified by its large, dark, puffy looking head with short, wide, greyish bill. The Bufflehead has an average length of just 36 cm or 14.5 inches, wingspan of about 53 cm or 21 inches, and weight of approximately 411 g or 15 ounces. The best places to spot a Bufflehead are small lakes with marshy edges and open centres, and areas where there are lots of poplar trees and aspen woodlands in central Alberta from the Spring through to late Autumn.

Fun Facts: •TheBuffleheadmigrates fromMexicoor theGulf Coast

of the United States to breed in Canada, and even as far north as Alaska.

•BuffleheadsareoneofthelastduckstoleaveAlbertabe-fore winter arrives.

•Shewilloftenchooseanabandonedwoodpecker’snest

•Asadivingduck, itslegsarenearthebackofitsbody, sothey must ‘run’ across the surface of the water to gain the momentum needed to take off and fly.

• The Bufflehead is Canada’s smallest duck and they cansqueeze through holes only eight centimeters wide!

•Buffleheadsareterritorial:maleswilldefendafemalebydiving under water and popping up underneath a rival male. Females will defend the water where they rear their young.

The Bufflehead is one of the scarcest ducks in North Amer-ica and its numbers continue to suffer from logging and agricultural clearing of poplar stands and aspen wood-lands, decreased numbers of Northern Flickers in an area, and human hunting activities.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild bird or animal in distress, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society hotline at 403-239-2488, for tips, instructions and advice, or look at the website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

Changes to Employment Insurance (EI)Employment Insurance provides economic security for Canadians when they need it most. For Canadians who have lost their jobs, or who must take time away from work to care for a new baby, an ill or injured loved one, assist aging parents, or get skills training – they should have the support they need and have earned - to make ends meet.

OurGovernment is committed to helping themiddleclass and those working hard to join it. During the 2015 election my colleagues and I committed to reforming Employment Insurance and to addressing gaps in the program that were leaving many Canadians without needed assistance during difficult times. The Govern-ment of Canada has kept its promise by improving the EI system across the country. Here’s how:

We have extended regular benefits in 15 priority re-gions that have experienced the sharpest and most severe increases in unemployment due to downturn in commodities.

We are repealing the unfair rules enacted in 2012 which forced unemployed workers to commute further and take lower-paying jobs.

We’re ending the 910-hour eligibility penalty for work-ers entering or re-entering the workforce, thereby stop-ping the discrimination that makes it harder for our most precarious workers – such as parents returning to the workforce, younger workers, people who have left the workforce due to illness, and new Canadians – from accessing the benefits that help them get back to work;

These changes were made so that the people of Cal-gary Centre, Alberta - and Canadians right across this country have access to help when they need it most. During challenging economic times, Employment Insurance must be available to help people in our communities get back on their feet. This program is an anchor of economic security for Canadian workers and we are working hard to ensure a system that is reliable, will help grow Canada’s economy, and makes a real difference in the lives of people in Calgary and across the country.

September is here and students are back at school!

School ZonesNow is a good time to remember that school zones to have been converted to playground zones. This means speed restrictions are in place year round, so there is no need to question whether or not you are required to slow down. Playground zone speeds of 30 km/h are in effect daily, year-round from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm. As kids re-turn to school it’s important to be extra-cautious around schools and remember to respect school patrollers and any additional posted signs around schools.

School FeesBack to school can be a costly time. Parents or guard-ians experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to speak to their school principal, or visit the Calgary Board of Education site at www.cbe.ab.ca or the Calgary Catho-lic School District at www.cssd.ab.ca, for information on waiving school fees.

I will also continue to push the government to live up to their promise of eliminating school fees. I strongly be-lieve that a public education should be accessible to all, and school fees that can exceed $750 per student are a huge burden for many parents, especially in challenging economic times. In addition to contacting your school board, please contact my office if you have concerns and we will do what we can to help.

Updating Alberta’s curriculumBeginning in September 2016 Alberta Education will start work on new curriculums for Alberta schools. Work will be done on six subject areas: Arts, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Sciences, and Wellness. Below is informa-

tion provided by the Alberta Government in a recentnews release with some background on the initiative.

•New curriculum will be developed for Kindergarten to Grade4bylate2018.ThatwillbefollowedbyGrades5to 8 in late 2019. After that, our high school curriculum will be developed in phases from 2020 to 2022.

•Current curriculum remains in effect until new curricu-lum is implemented.

•New curriculum will contain an explicit focus on the development of learner outcomes that support and re-inforce 21st-century competencies across curriculum as well as literacy and numeracy.

•Support for First Nations, Métis and Inuit student learn-ing, as well as the inclusion of Education for Reconcilia-tion, which includes ways of knowing and diverse per-spectives, will be reflected in future K-12 curriculum

Albertans will be asked to provide feedback on the devel-opment of the curriculum through face-to-face meetings and online surveys. Watch my website at www.calgaryel-bow.ca to find out how you can provide your input, and feel free to get in touch any time if you have questions or ideas you would like to share.

In 6 Minutes Or LessI can barely count the times when I’m walking downtown or on 17th Ave and I hear the unmistakable sirens of The Calgary Fire Department (CFD). Those sirens which are so familiar to just about any inner city resident are a constant reminder of how hard our Fire Department work. However, the CFD doesn’t just deal with fires; they have made incredible strides towards making Ward 8 communities safer. There are a few major inci-dent types that they deal with, including general public service assistance calls, hazardous conditions caused by weather, res-cues, medical assists, and of course fires.

The most prominent non-fire calls that the CFD receive are medical assists, which have been of increasing importance for the CFD as they help our local EMS with calls. Surprisingly, the incident rate has gone up 27% in Ward 8 since 2011. As a result, the CFD has been piloting dedicated Medical Response Units (MRUs) throughout the city, which have made responses to medical assist calls much more effective.

One thing you may not know about the CFD is that there are im-portant policy decisions that provide them with goals. Calgary’s Action Plan 2015-2018 establishes Service Levels and Response Times Targets (SLRTT) for different types of emergencies and in-cidents. There are two main categories for emergencies, Effec-tive Response Force (ERF) emergencies, and non-ERF emergen-cies. The difference between the two is that ERF emergencies involve structural or building fires and require a minimum of 12 firefighters and other priority resources.

For non-ERF emergencies, the goal as per the SLRTT is 90% of first responders arriving in less than 7 minutes, which the CFD easily surpassed in Ward 8. In 2015, 90% of responses happened in 6:32 or less. That’s a full 28 seconds before the benchmark, and is pretty impressive considering Ward 8’s density and traffic. For ERF emergencies, the goal is for a full ERF to arrive in less than 11 minutes 90% of the time. Unsurprisingly, the CFD suc-ceeded and had 90% of responses in 10:10 or less during 2015.

The CFD is an example of when policy and implementation align to create positive outcomes for Calgarians. It’s obvious that this department shows incredible dedication and creates tangible results, something that they can and should be recog-nized for. So, the next time that you’re downtown and hear the familiar blare of a siren, know that while it might annoy you for a few seconds, our heroic firefighters are using those seconds to make a difference in every Calgarians life.

Another summer has come and gone. I hope you en-joyed all it had to offer in and around our city. The City of Calgary and our Community Associations held many great events to get out moving and socializing like the Canada Day celebrations in the downtown, Stampede breakfasts, festivals, and mobile skateparks.

Council is back in session after the August break, along with all Councillor appointments to special commit-tees. I’m involved in many facets of City and partner functions, and I love these opportunities to work with great organizations and make positive changes. Here’s a bit about what I have been and will be up to. I sit on two Standing Policy Committees: on Community and Protective Services, and on Transportation and Transit. I also serve on Audit Committee and the Intergovern-mental Affairs Committee.

I am on the board of Attainable Homes Calgary Corpo-ration (AHCC), Calgary Housing Company (CHC), and the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF). These three committees represent the continuum of ensuring Cal-gary’s citizens are able to address their housing needs. By helping to create strategies to get Calgarians into homes, stay sheltered if they face physical or financial hurdles, and move out of the system and into home ownership, I am able to recommend policy proposals which make sense within the larger picture.

My work on the boards of Family and Community Sup-port Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA), and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) allows me to guide municipal policy development in conjunction with initiatives at the federal and provincial levels, and vice versa. FCSSAA meetings take me up to Edmonton once a month and FCM meetings take me all over Can-ada every few months to meet with colleagues in other Canadian municipalities. With FCM, I am the Chair of the Executive Committee, on theGovernanceCommittee, part of the Prairies and Territories Regional Caucus, on the Standing Committee on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development, the Chair of the network of francophone municipalities, the Standing Committee

onIncreasingWomen’sParticipationinMunicipalGov-ernment, Chair of the Standing Committee on Social-Economic Development, on the National Municipal Energy Infrastructure Task Force and the GovernanceRepresentative for Haiti projects.

The City of Calgary is the sole shareholder of ENMAX (while the City “owns all the chips”, it doesn’t play them). In my role on the ENMAX Board of Directors, I am really excited about the future possibilities of electrical dis-tribution. ENMAX is a separate legal organization, and pays the City of Calgary dividends when able. I prefer that the City use these dividends for re-investment, such as into the ENMAX Legacy Parks Fund. This is the funding mechanism behind the Sandy Beach/River Park rehabilitation project.

I also act in an advisory capacity to the BiodiverCity Ad-visory Committee, the Climate Change Action Advisory and the National Zero Waste Council. Healthy native flora and fauna populations give our city increased re-silience in the face of climate change. Especially at the municipal level, it’s important to address waste, and the real cost of waste to both the municipality and our en-vironment.

I also serve on the Calgary Arts Development Authority board. Besides my past involvement in and love of the arts community, there is a real economic argument for the arts that we as a City need to support.

As we gear up for a busy fall, be sure to subscribe to your Ward 11 update at www.ward11calgary.ca to receive an email or two a month letting you know about important happenings in your community and city.

GreetingsWard9,

I hope that everyone has had a great summer and have been able to recharge themselves. As we turn our at-tention towards the fall and get back into our routines, many items in the immediate future will affect all com-munities inWard9. Someof these include, theGreenLine North design charrettes, the Calgary Hospital Legacy Fund committee update, the Community Rep-resentation Framework report, discussions surrounding Area Redevelopment Plans (ARPs), the Developed Areas Guidebook(DAG)andtheGreenLinereport, comingtoCouncil this month.

Other items, spearheaded by your Team Ward 9, can’t possibly fit into this article. If you are interested in knowing more, please sign up for email notifications from at www.calgary.ca/ward9connect. Also, visit my

website (www.gccarra.ca), follow me on Twitter (www.twitter.com/gccarra) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/gccarra). You will find videos, updates and issues of the day, where I look forward to your feedback and responding to your concerns.

Team Ward 9 has always been committed to being acces-sible to you. As such, your Team Ward 9 will continue to engage each community with our well-received Commu-nity Objectives Workshops (COWs).

To date, we have held them for the communities of Park Hill, Erlton, Rideau-Roxboro, Renfrew, Bridgeland-Riverside, Inglewood and Ramsay. From this concrete feedback, our office has been able to get more work done. If you are seeing increased activity from Parks, Roads, Neighbourhood Services or any other City de-partment in your neighbourhood, it’s likely a direct result of those workshops.

For the communities of Riverbend, Tuxedo Park, Win-ston Heights-Mountview, Fairview, Acadia and Dover, we ask for you to save the dates below in your calen-dar and send an email to [email protected] to RSVP, as space is limited and they do go quickly. •Riverbend

He suc-ceeds Shelaine, who has accepted an amazing oppor-tunity outside of The City. We will certainly miss her en-ergy, passion for, and success at, community outreach and engagement. I am excited to introduce Blair to you all, and know that he will be a great fit for Team Ward 9.

See you all soon.
