Congratulations, graduates,we, and I mean we, made itanother step closer to success.
I know it doesnt feel like much yet, since there are those of us who aftercommencement weekend will bewaking up early Monday morningfor another day of online resumeentries, phone call updates andinterview scheduling, when lucky. The process is tedious and manytimes it feels so unrewarding. Thething is, sometimes it just takesmore time than we want. We makeplans to wake up, spend two hourssending out resumes and cover letters to spend the restof the time doing phone calls, dropping off resumes, making a list of prospective
employments and running errands. Yet it sometimes takes two hours to build aprole, upload a resume, a cover letter and take the personality assessments justfor one job application. Though I have received wonderful answers after a fewpersonality tests, I desire new traits for the simple pleasure of producing differentanswers. The process of searching for a career opportunity leaves me feeling likethe kid in the back of the car screaming, ARE WE THERE YET when I justgot in the car. You would think that since I began working at age 16, I would havethe experience and knowledge to remember that sometimes it takes time and alot of prayer for the call to come in. For now, I thank God for my husband whoendures the load being my support system and a family who encourages me to bepersistent. I can only do the same for you other graduates out there in telling youto stay persistent, You never know whats around the corner.

According to an article in CNN Money reported byReuters, California's February jobless rate far exceededboth the state's 6.2% rate a year earlier and the nationalunemployment average for February of 8.1%, accordingto the report by the state's Employment DevelopmentDepartment. This would not seem promising for anew college graduate trying to nd a job in a slumpingeconomy.
But this article is not about doom and gloom, this articleis about this years theme of hope and change. You mightbe asking how? Well hope and change is about attitudeand looking at situations in life through a positivelens. If you are having difculty as an undergraduate
nding your dream jobs consider graduate school. Mostundergraduate students want to get real life workexperience instead of obtaining a higher degree, this isthe opportunity that they need, no jobs; stay in school. This goes the same for the graduate student. Graduatingwith a Masters level degree thinking that there would be several employment opportunities around thecorner waiting for you to graduate to nd out the mostemployers have signicantly cut their budgets or in themiddle of a hiring freeze. Well think about getting yourdoctorate level degree while working at the job youwere hoping to lose once you graduated. And if you are
a doctoral student graduating well you can always begfor work at the university that you graduated from. Thereason that continuing your education is recommendedis because the job market will not continue to be thistight always; it is only tight for right now. And lets
face it student loans are creeping up and if you still donot have a career to build on; defer, defer, defer.
Lets say that deferring is not your opinion and that youbarely made it to graduation and you would rather workthan write one more essay. You will need to stand out ofa crowd. Here are some of tips to help in your searchnetwork, make an impressive resume, and stay positiveNetworking helps you stand out to an employer. If youare currently a student, become involved in plenty ofevents and groups related to your major. Making yourresume stand out is not as hard as it may seem. Littlethings such as adding a picture of yourself or usingpositive phrases can add luster to an otherwise averageresume. Change your language to appear optimistic andpositive; an example of the use of positive language is
instead of saying you have no experience in a certainarea, saying that you are willing and open to learningis obviously more constructive. Employers are alwaysopen to someone who is willing to conform to their jobdescriptions, rather than a position having to conformto an applicant.
It is not hard to become discouraged by the declining jobmarket. Plenty of students are working in jobs that theyfeel over-qualied for while waiting to land "the job."Remember when the economy is good, graduates arehighly likely to get multiple job offers with competing
salaries, but for now it is a work and waits game. Butwhile you are waiting remember to have hope and tobe the change in the world that you would like to see(Paraphase from Ghandi)

Case FacsTHE PETITIONERS, who are militarydetainees, sought for the SupremeCourt review their case pursuant tothe statue 1005 (e)(2) of the DetaineeTreatment Act (DTA). Each detaineechallenged his status by ling a courtreview of the Combatant Status ReviewTribunal(CSRT) that he is an enemycombatant. The Respondent SecretaryGates contended that the court lack subjectmatter jurisdiction over the petitionerscomplaint. Moreover, the rehearing was
to determine whether the court retained jurisdiction after the U.S. SupremCourt had found unconstitutional 7 ofthe Military Commission Act of 2006( formerly DTA 1005(e)(1) codied a28 U.S.C.S.224(e), which abolishedHabeas jurisdiction for Guantanamodetainees.Legal Qes
Does the Supreme Court have jurisdiction of enemy combatants, status and scopeof legal rights to apply for habeas corpus proceedings?
the Hldg Decs
The congress would not have enacted one statutory provision had it known thatanother provision would be held unconstitutional, then the former provisioncannot be severed from the latter and the two provision unconstitutional, then thetwo provision must fall/fail. Congress did not intend for DTA 1005(e)(2) whichgave the court alone jurisdiction to review CSRT determinations, to stand aparfrom the section of the Military Commissions Act (MCA) that provides no courshall have jurisdiction to hear detainees petition for a writ of habeas corpusThis provision abolishing habeas jurisdiction for Guantanamo detainees. TheSupreme Court held the view :1) review shall be conducted solely in this court, 2)limited scope, and 3) to displace habeas corpus and any other action by which analien held at Guantanamo might challenge his detention in court. Since the courheld unconstitutional the provision eliminating habeas jurisdiction. The court nolonger provide jurisdiction exclusively in this over a detainees challenge to hisdetention as an enemy combatant; instead a detainee may challenge his detentionin the District Court for the District of Columbia and get review of its decision inthis court. So the Supreme Court dismissed the detainees petitions.
This case has signicance to Forensic Psychologists, because it is important tounderstand the text in the law and background information that may or may nothelp you in the court of law. The procedural process of arguing, of the variouscases that overlap with this particular case is important to know how to argueand the points to address to the court. It is also important because if the SupremeCourt had made this decision, we would have to implement this as the law of theland. Instead the Supreme Court referred it back to the court in which the case wasoriginally reviewed.

nstead, I will probably begraduating in the Spring of2010. This reality may havethe potential to lead my mindin unsavory directions. It
could make me feel guilty. Itcould make me feel unworthy. It could make me sad, and it
could make me feel disappointed inmyself. After all, the vast majority ofmy fellow classmates will be graduatingsuccessfully and moving on to theircareers and future opportunities. Beingaware of this reality, it becomes difcultfor me not to ask the question "Is theresomething wrong with me because Idid not graduate with the rest of theclass?"
I will spare you the drama, there reallyis not that much wrong withme. I am diligently studiousin my academic studies; Iread the material, write thepapers, ask lots of questionsduring class, and occasionallyfraternize with peers. Moreor less, I stay focused on thetask at hand and accomplish what needsto be accomplished for my degree of
study or any other endeavor I set mymind to. While that last statement may be laced with interpretive undertonesof cockiness, the fact remains - my bestlaid plans to gleefully graduate in theSpring of 2009 turned out to not be thebest laid plans after all.
The extension of my graduation to thefollowing spring is a reality, end ofstory. This does not change the fact thatI have encountered many fascinating
people (fellow classmates) along theway so far here at Alliant. Not onlythat, the San Diego campus employswonderful staff and faculty that haveprovided and hosted numerous eventsand festivities that have added value toand inspired the lives of many aspiringstudents and practitioners, like myself.
Dr. Mike Pittenger, Associate VicePresident at Campus CommunityDevelopment and Student Life, wasone person on campus who reallytook the time to guide me in the rightdirection after arriving here at Alliantin the summer of 2007. Although heheld a bit of a grudge because I missed
orientation, he quickly forgave me andhelped me to become more familiarizedwith the school, the faculty, and the
staff. Thanks for the taking the time Dr.P!
Shon San Jose, Academic Advisorfor the Marriage and Family Therapyprogram graduate students, is anotherperson who has helped me tremendouslyalong my academic path. Specically,Shon has directed me on how to bestapproach the task of nding a practicumsite and how to try and stay organizedwith all the uttering, exchanging, and shufing of documents. How sheorganizes and manages the graduate
students in the MFT program is beyondme, especially if half the studentshave as much trouble as I do keepingeverything organized and in one pieceThanks for being so patient Shon!
One other person that I would like tosend a special thank-you to is RemeshaLionel, my International StudenAdvisor. Basically, Remesha ensuresthat I keep everything nice and legawhen crossing back and forth betweenborders. And let me tell you, Remeshahelped me out of a serious customs andimmigration jam one time.
Long story short, I forgot to get myinternational papers signed (renewed)before going back to Canada. Needlessto say, the U.S customs and immigration
ofcer at the Vancouver border was notimpressed. Thankfully, the ofcer was
lenient toward me and granted 30 dayto settle the immigration issue withWashington D.C. So, I did an ol' rat-a-tat-tat on Remesha's door and quicklyexplained the situation at hand. Ofcourse, Remesha was calm, cool, andcollected, reassuring me that everythingwould be ne and some additionapaper work and documentation wouldhave to be sent to D.C. for inspectionapproval, and a reinstatement ofinternational student status. my dear wife.
Of course, there are so manymore individuals who havemade my experience a greatone so far; Tina Moncada,Linda Pyle, Val Trouyet,Gloria Mercier, MilesBeauchamp, Deb London,Richard Gardner, and JimGoodrich to name only afew. I always do my best torecount our interactions andsee what we have learnedfrom each other. The last year and half or so atAlliant has been wonderful.Meeting and talking withso many staff members andfaculty at CSPP, MGSM,CUE, CFS, and HSOE hasreally opened up my eyesto how diverse San Diegoreally is. Whether people
gather for the InternationalStudents Association (ISA),I-MERIT events, or just agood old shindig at GreenHall, something is alwayshappening and people aretouching each other's lives. This is how I have cometo know Alliant - a schoolwhere people help eachother shape more positiveand personally fulllinglives.
So then, the best laid plansare not always the best laid plans. Part of me is happythat I am not graduating ontime. If I did graduate ontime, I probably would nothave met and interacted withall of the wonderful peoplewho are here at Alliant SanDiego. Many thanks to youall, this is an outstanding place to be.

Generally, the Latino culture
has been described as being
dened by traditional gender
roles for men and women, and a
high regard for parental roles, which
is consistent with the collectivistic
nature (Delgado, Gaitan, 1994). Other
traditional Latino values of respect
and dignity are complementary to the
use of social roles, to help establish
boundaries (Molina & Aguirre-Molina,
1994). Latinos are more likely to
be guided by social interaction o
personalism with the establishment o
trust rapport through developing warm
friendly relationships (Cuellar, 1995)
Another demonstration of collectivism
nature of the Latino culture is in the

understanding and value of the family.
The family is an important context fortheir culture, and members are highly
valued and often extended family is set-
up with godparents and grandparents.
The family members live close by and
have a sense of obligation towards
each other (Molina & Aguirre-Molina,
1994).
In the Latino culture, a strong individual
is able to control oneself, and withstand
stress during difcult times. The weak person cannot control ones emotions
and maybe less likely to pursue
counseling. It is critical to assess the
individual as a cultural being before
diagnosis and treatment, because not
all Latinos are the same or adhere to
the culture of their ethnic subgroup
to the same extent (Dana, 1993).
Ethnic identity, cultural values, and
acculturation are constructs that can
be used to assess the degree to which
an individual integrates their cultural
background into their self-identity and
behavior (Felix-Ortiz, Newcomb, &Myers, 1994;Phinney, 1991 Roberts,
Phinney, Romero, & Chen, 1999). The
therapist must create a condition that
The Envoy May 2009 envoy.alliant.edu 13
makes it reasonable safe for the client to
be self-disclosing, instill hope, establishrapport, and provide opportunities to
learn new ways of thinking, feeling,
and behaving.
My reections about my strengths
are that I am honest, and I believe in
helping others that needs help. I have
the ability to feel empathy for others
who have experience difcult time. I
can learn quickly to adapt to changes
that are essential in helping other aswell as learning new approach. One of
my strong points is that of research, and
being able to apply what I have learned.
I have good attentive skills, and I
comprehend verbal instruction well. I
have condence in my communication
skills. I can speak the same language
as Latinos so that will make them feel
comfortable and would be helpful
in building rapport. Some of my
challenges are to get over some of my
own prejudices with cultural difference
and be more caring and sensitive with
others that are different. Being patiencewith other cultures and understand how
they view their world and problems
are challenges for me at the moment.
Believing in others cultures and
traditions is a problem and somethingI must get better at. Trusting others
to be up front and fair when we are
conversing. The sharing of information
about my culture is a challenge as well
The ability to accept others differences
without alienating them. Being able to
responsed appropriately once someone
has disclosed information to me, so
that I can help him or her out of their
situation. The goal of immediacy and
the skill of using process commentsis something I would currently like to
master. The ability to share with others
about my own personal experience is
a challenge. This portion of the essay
has been a challenge in revealing my
present problems that I need to work
on. I feel that this class has begun to
help me nurture the healing process
within myself and the group interaction
has been therapeutic for me. I feel a
need to learn more about myself and
my fault to be in a better situation to
help others. The challenge of knowing
myself will give me the condencein helping others, in resolving their
problems.
The ability to share with others about my
own personal experience is a challenge.

A FTER AN INTERESTING CONFERENCE IN HAWAII ITS GOOD TO BE
BACK ON CAMPUS.
IN EARLY MAY, the 2009 Pacic Rim Conference on Disabilities sponsored by the
Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was held at the Hawaii
Convention Center in Honolulu. The conference was excellent by almost any marker. There
were nearly two thousand people from nations throughout the Pacic Rim with diverse
interests in disability issues ranging from the social to the legal, education and ADA, the
artistic and beyond. The presentations were teamed according to subject / interest and my
presentation was teamed with Dr. Rachel Carling-Jenkins from Monash University, Victoria,
Australia who discussed post-modern disability issues in Australia.
The paper I presented spoke on the subject of the portrayal of disabled individuals in American
literature and how they have been used primarily, and too often only, to elicit pathos, fear, or
hatred, with the disability eliciting the feeling as much as the character. This literature then
affects, not just reects, society and its views of the disabled.
The conference was one of the most interesting and well designed, and most accommodating,
in all facets imaginable considering the logistics. Great as the conference was, however, its
nice to be back on campus. Honolulu might be okay for a conference but, well, we do live
in San Diego after all.

MPR, San DiegoWendy Chung, PhD
M
y school schedule read as follows, Comm4000 DR. WENDY CHUNG. I was quick to assume I would be in thepresence of a Petit Asian Woman with an intense look yet a nice smile. Where I pulled this image I dont reallyknow. I opened the door to a room in Daly Hall and there she was! A Petit Asian Woman looking straight at me
with a smile. I was slow to ask, Is this Comm4000? Before she could answer, the door opened behind me. There stoodanother women, bright eyes and grand smile and apparently not Asian, she announced in a wonderfully amazing Caribbeanaccent that she was Dr. Wendy Chung , she went on to state that the room had been assigned to her.
The situation was taken care of and the real Dr. Chung stood up. She has an overwhelming energy that captured my fullattention and for the last ve semesters has kept me on my feet. This April, I was in her ofce going over my Capstoneexperience when I asked if I could take some time to ask her a few questions, she agreed. It was a warm day, and her ofcewas a cool place adorned with cultural ornaments that brought life into that small space. She was looking straight at me witha bright smile waiting for my questions.

Grades Are Never Forgotten
For those who know me on a personal level, you are fullyacquainted with the fact that I am
very vocal in expressing my opinionsabout the many issues that impact thestudents of Alliant. The initial goal of thiscolumn was to discuss such issues thatimpact students , but more importantlyto serve as an open and honest voicein which students could nd somecomfort and support in their some timesfrustrating journey of studenthood.
During this time in the semester Ithought it would be appropriate todiscuss a topic that so deeply resonateswith us all. Grades or what Id like tocall judgment day. And I call it this because of how grades sum up all ofefforts or lack thereof in a semesterthat is typically devoted to test taking, paper writing and presentation giving. Not to mention the fear or anxietymost students feel the day grades comeout. Grades are what we stress over
and often times can underestimate. Inevery students career they will almostall earn an unsatisfactory (what theyconsidered unsatisfactory) grade hereand there. Consequently the studentmay feel robbed of their hard workor just simply disagree with the gradegiven. Notice I use the word earnas many professors will often use thisresponse to such a statement. The truthof the matter is, a students life is run
by points, percentages, and the alltoo familiar A,B,C,D,F grading scale.Whether we like to admit it or not theseare the very factors that motivate ourefforts to complete assignments, dowell on them and stay on track withthe course load. So what happens whenwe dont agree with a grade given tous? Depending on the grade, a lot ofstudents never dispute it. I cant tellyou how many classmates I have hadwho were unhappy with their nalgrade (for whatever reason) but wereeither too lazy or afraid to challenge theinstructor. In my ve years on the SanDiego campus I have noticed this trendwhich I can only explain as a legitimateresponse to students understandingof the authority the instructor has in
passing or failing the student. The lastthing a student wants to do is createtension with a professor whom theywill likely have to take other courseswith, yet sometimes it is necessary toclear up grades that would damage astudents academic record. On the otherhand, professors are also given grades. At the end of the semester professorsare required to pass out the infamous
evaluation forms. Students shoulduse this time to essentially give theirinstructor a grade. This process is ouropportunity to give our opinions on thecourse and the instructors performance.I am absolutely positive that any studentwho has had issues with an instructor onany level has expressed their concernsin the evaluation. Isnt that the whole purpose of an evaluation? I am a personal believer that any professor
who has demanded high expectationsfrom their students should be preparedfor that same treatment from studentsFor years I questioned the trueeffectiveness of these evaluations. Iwondered whether or not instructorseven applied students critiques to theirnext semester. And while I still cannotabsolutely positively be sure thatevaluations have a big impact on theinstructor I can say that they do playa role in the Universities attempt aunderstanding the needs of the studentsGrades cannot be taken lightly. For thehigh achievers, grades are signicant intheir achievement and self image. Andeven for the average student, knowingyour success in a course not only servesas a motivator but it makes you truly
feel that you can (even in the toughestof courses) get through. Its especiallysignicant for those trying to graduatewith honors, maintaining scholarshipsor self fulllment. Its easy for any oneto tell a students its just a grade butfor a student a grade is much more. Forsome students a grade is their livelihoodand the grade they earn in a class wilcarry on into their lifes achievements
For those that dont agree, I ask youto ask someone who has ever gotten agrade they felt they didnt deserve (orbad grade they did) what class it wain and the name of the instructorBad grades and the instructor that
gave them are never forgotten
