Sant’Agnese in Agone

Sant'Agnese in Agone is a 17th century Baroque church located on the Piazza Navona in Rome, one of the main urban spaces in the historic centre of the city and the site where the Early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. The name of this church is unrelated to the ‘agony’ of the martyr: in agone was the ancient name of Piazza Navona (piazza in agone), and meant instead, from the Greek, ‘in the site of the competitions’.Inside the church is a shrine for Saint Agnes, containing her skull.

St Peter’s Basilica

St Peter’s Basilica is the world’s largest Basilica of Christianity, nested into the heart of the Vatican City.

St. Peter's Basilica stands on the traditional site where Peter - the apostle who is considered the first pope - was crucified and buried. St. Peter's tomb is under the main altar and many other popes are buried in the basilica as well. Originally founded by Constantine in 324, St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in the 16th century by Renaissance masters including Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.

Santa Maria degli Angeli

Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, better known by its shorter name Santa Maria degli Angeli, is a unique Renaissance church in Rome. In 1541, a Sicilian priest, Fr. Antonio Lo Duca, had a vision

14

of angels in the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian. As a result, Pope Pius IV (1559-1565) ordered that a church be built within the Baths. The church was designed by Michelangelo, who began work in 1563 but died a year later in 1564. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to the angels, and to the Christian slaves who died building the baths. Like most churches in Rome, Santa Maria degli Angeli is filled with art and monumental tombs and also has some holy relics. In the left transept, the new Chapel of St Bruno was constructed as part of the restoration works for the 1700 Jubilee. On the left side is the Meridian Line, a sundial laid down along the meridian that crosses through Rome, at latitude 15º.

Chiesa di San Moisé, Venice

The Chiesa di San Moisè is a church in Venice and it is dedicated to Moses as, like the Byzantines, the Venetians tended to canonise Old Testament prophets. It also honors Moisè Venier, who paid for it to be rebuilt in the

9th century.

The church is located close to St Mark’s Square

rehearsals and concerts, modest and respectful behaviour is expected i.e. loud and raucous conversation, shouting and other outbursts are to be avoided.Catholic churches are always active places of prayer even when services are not being held so your peaceful respect for those who are there to pray is greatly appreciated.

WATER:Performers should be sure to bring their own bottled water with them each day. It is a good idea to buy a bottle at the start of the tour and refill it as necessary from public fountains or at your hotel.
