On Dec. 21, Aitkin Fit City Committee met to plan three moonlight skiing and snowshoe events. The events will feature skiing and snow-shoeing on candle-lit trials, a bonfire, hot chocolate and goodies, hats for sale, music and more family-friendly ac-tivities. Cycle Path and Paddle will have skis and snowshoes available to rent.
Events dates are Sat., Jan.
22 at the No Achen Tank Trails in Aitkin; Sat., Feb. 18 at the Long Lake Con-servation Center, south of Palisade and Sat., Mar. 19 at Savanna State Park, north of McGregor.
As an added attraction on the Feb. 18 event, since it is President’s Day Weekend, Long Lake is considering hav-ing lodging available in the Marcum House dormitory.
Those people who just want to hike or enjoy the fire — but don’t want to partake in the more vigorous skiing or snowshoeing -- are welcome to come and hang out.
Key Aitkin Fit City com-mittee members are: Mike Paulbeck, Chair; Amy Wyant, Vice-Chair; Kathy Brophy, Secretary; Gary Tibbetts, Treasurer; Amber Brown Roth, Core; Maryann Holder, Core; Colleen Nielsen, Core; Lincoln Roth, Core; Jen Wey-er, Core.
Everyone will be appoint-ed by Aitkin Mayor Gary Tibbetts in January.
The committee is hoping to repeat the success of last year when about 80 people attended a moonlight ski event at the Tank trails in Aitkin. A $2 donation will be requested and these evenings should be a spectacular time of family fun and burning off those holiday calories.

MLEC Donates to area schoolsMille Lacs Energy Cooperative (MLEC) recently presented $2,500 checks to three area
schools. This money is available from unclaimed checks issued to former cooperative members. While MLEC makes every effort to locate correct, current address when checks are issued, checks remaining unclaimed after seven years may be donated to a qualified organization rather than paid to the State of Minnesota.
The Cooperative has chosen to donate this money to area schools on a rotating basis. Do-nations were made this year to Aitkin Public School, Minisinaakwaang Leadership Academy in East Lake and Crosby-Ironton School.
MLEC Energy Advisor, Jeff Peysar was pleased to pres-ent a check to Aitkin Public School Superintendent Ber-nie Novak.
MLEC Energy Advisor, Jeff Peysar was pleased to pres-ent a check to Crosby Ironton Elementary School Principal Joe Conner.
Minisinaakwaang Leader-ship Academy Director Noah Johnson was pleased to re-ceive a check from MLEC En-ergy Advisor, Jeff Coombs.
Stacy O’Connell, a Central Lakes College student, has been nominated for one of three $1,000 Minnesota Trio Association scholarships.
The scholarships are the Ronald McKinley, the Bruce Vento Memorial, and the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial.
She was selected for the competition from 180 CLC Trio participants. Trio is a U.S. Department of Educa-tion federally-funded student support services program.
O’Connell is an honors
graduate from CLC 14 years ago, when she earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in accounting. The Crosby native, now a single parent living in Brainerd, worked for 13 years in ac-counting.
She returned to CLC when her youngest child was di-agnosed with a learning dis-ability requiring O’Connell to educate herself about the extra support she would need.
She is in her second year and planning on graduating this May with her Associate in Science degree in Young Child Education. She intends to transfer to St. Cloud State University and work toward a Bachelor of Science de-gree.
“The Trio program has assisted me with finding a four-year college that offers a Special Education degree that will work with my family responsibilities,” she said.
In her essay with the nomi-nation, O’Connell outlined her situation and the value of membership in Trio:
“As a mom of four children ranging in age 16 to 4, I deal with not only balancing my own educational schedule, but four children’s as well. My youngest child has been diagnosed with having non-progressive brain damage, Global Developmental De-lay, and Speech and Lan-guage Delay.
“These diagnoses require extra support and attention and this is why I have chosen to go back to school, so I can help her and others like her reach their full potential out of life.
“When my youngest was diagnosed and I was told she would struggle to keep up with other children her age I decided that I wanted to be a part of her success. I enrolled in college again. Each day is a struggle, since it is difficult
for me to balance working part-time while I am going to school full-time.
“Trio/SSS assists me with setting my educational goals and encouraging me to stay on track for my future... I have been able to meet new people and participate in various activities … I have enjoyed helping others in the lab ... and being part of this organization that wants all of us to succeed every day ...”
She said that if she receives the scholarship, the funds will go toward daycare and
Stacy O’Connell nominated for Minnesota Trio Association scholarshipother household expenses. She said she does not qualify for state assistance.
O’Connell has earned academic honors during her second time as a CLC student, and despite raising her family, working part-time for the college, and partici-pating in organizations such as Women of Today, she cur-rently has a 3.23 grade-point average.
“Stacy is an integral part of the Brainerd Lakes Women of Today,” said Tami Evenson, membership vice president. “In all of our projects and
events, she brings a positive attitude and strong desire to help the community. As local program manager for Youth of Today, she does an amazing job coordinating activities that bring focus to the youth of our com-munity.
“She definitely is deserving of all honors. We think the world of her and know how hard she is working.”
Her children are Ahre-anna, 16; Calvin, 14; Zac, 8; and Rainah, 4. They are a host family for 17-year-old Annie from Latvia.
The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) has extended the deadline for nominations to its annual list of the state’s 10 Most Endan-gered Historic Places. The new deadline is Sat., Jan. 15. The nomination form is available at the Alliance’s website, www.mnpreserva-tion.org/programs/ten-most-endangered/
The 10 Most Endangered program shines a spotlight on historic places that are threatened with demolition, increasing disinvestment and neglect, or which face orga-nizational challenges and
financial obstacles. Through the 10 Most Endangered pro-gram, PAM works with local communities to surmount these impediments to preser-vation and seek rehabilitation or creative reuse of the fea-tured buildings and sites.
The 10 Most Endangered Historic Places List is selected from nominations submit-ted by citizens and groups from around the state of Minnesota. Property owners are given the opportunity to comment on the proposed listing to ensure all possible information is considered by a jury of preservation
professionals and advocates. The list is announced in May during National Preservation Month. Through the work its Field Representative, Erin Hanafin Berg, and members of its volunteer Advocacy Committee, PAM continues to engage with local citizens, property owners, and elected officials to find a positive out-come for each endangered property after the list is an-nounced. Previously listed properties are considered part of the 10 Most Endangered program until a definitive outcome occurs.

In the first report from the 2010 Census, re-leased today, the South and the West gained congressional seats, while the Northeast and the Midwest lost some. The changes will be used to redistrict congressional districts in 2011, which will affect the makeup of the House of Repre-sentatives as well as the Electoral College.
States in South and West gain Congressional seats
Analysts said the chang-es, which will take effect for the 2012 elections, likely will benefit Re-publicans.
“Republicans are in the best position since modern redistricting began,” Tim Storey, an expert on redistricting at the National Conference of State Legislatures, told The New York Times.
Texas gained four seats, Florida gained two,
while New York and Ohio lost two apiece. Gaining one seat were Arizona, Georgia, Ne-vada, South Carolina, Utah and Washington. Losing one seat were Illinois, Iowa, Louisi-ana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey and Penn-sylvania.
State legislatures are responsible for redraw-ing the districts.

The Reif Center is kick-ing off 2011 with a literal bang! On Jan. 7, at 7:30 p.m., witness the energy and spectacle of Minnesota’s most accomplished tap dancers, Rhythmic Circus.
Rhythmic Circus has quick-ly risen from an underground percussive-dance phenom-enon to an innovative live performance company con-sisting of the Twin Cities’ hot-test and hippest tap dancers, musicians and vocalists.
In their groundbreaking production, “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!“ The company showcases their technical capacity as dancers and ex-plores rhythm through per-cussive dance as it plays off an array of musical genres from funk to R&B to salsa.
Rhythmic Circus is no
stranger to the spotlight. The company’s current produc-tion “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!” premiered at the RITZ Theatre in August of 2008, opened for Savion Glover’s Bare Soundz, performed with Vocal Essence in Witness at the Ordway Performing Arts Center, and appeared in the
“Crash Bang Boom!” festival at the Minnesota Orchestra Hall.
Tickets for this performance are currently available at the Reif Center box office, by phone at 218-327-5780 or online at www.reifcenter.org. Tickets $25/adult, $23/senior, $13/student.
