At last, summer again! Here's to longhazy days, dazzling mornings andundoubtedly our best ever programmeof“musicfilmcomedytheatredanceart”(our newword, made easily enough).

Julian Cope (p4), Scanner (p4), ArthurBrown (p5), Amy's Ghost (p3), The

Scarecrow (p6), Will Hodgson (p8), Days of Last (p3), The YouthArts Festival (p10), Book Swaps (p19), cutting edge video art (p20)- and an extravagantly chockablock cinema programme whichsimply has to be enjoyed nomatter how balmy the summer evenings.

There's a curious time lag effect when I begin writing my little bitof hurraying, seeing as you may well be reading this four monthsafter my moment of word fishing and stone squeezing! I could tellyou how great our first weekend of glorious t-shirt weather was(aeroplane free too!), but by now the first kiss of summer couldwell be a just hazy, lazy memory. It's tempting to talk elections aswe're currently wading through a flood of promises, but if you'rereading this in midsummer you may have already decided that itwasn't worth the fuss anyway!

Hmm... OK, in that case allow me to briefly mention somethingguaranteed, whatever the date, to be warm and intoxicating, honest and reliable. Born midway through 2009, our new onlineproject Beat Magazine is fast turning into an essential dealer incultural insights, interviews and ideas. Expertly edited by Mel Gow,with authors pooled from around the region, Beat manages toimpress me every issue by joining the dots between all the myriadstrands of creative output that are happening right here and now.I seriously recommend checking it out (there's a sneak preview onpage 17) at www.beatmagazine.co.uk.

Good grief, we should be selling this stuff.. oh wait, we are! Hurray!Enjoy your summer.

“The world’s traditional weights and measures are amongst the few remaining living links we still have with our most distant ancestors – from the pre-literate tribesmen who would measure the height of their livestock with the width of their hands to the invaders from Rome who counted out their marches in thousand-pace units, the mille passus, our mile – And I cannot for the life of me

understand how abolishing all of this in favour of a made-up system designed for tidy-minded bureaucrats is anything but the most shocking and ignorant cultural vandalism”.

Firestation Book SwapThur 20 May, 17 June, 15 July 7:45pm £5 GA

A literary event with a difference.

Novelist Marie Phillips, author of Gods Behaving Badly and publisherScott Pack host an evening of conversation and banter with a crackingline-up of guest writers.

Don't expect the polite, reserved atmosphere you would normally findat a literary gathering – The Book Swap is irreverent, entertaining and

slightly chaotic. You won’t hear boring speeches, the same old questions or authors readingfrom their latest book - but you could witness almost anything else.

Audience members are required to bring an unwanted book along with them which they will havean opportunity to swap for a different on one on the night. No one leaves empty handed.

Check the Firestation website or call our box office for full detailsof our exciting, upcoming Literary Events

"Certainly a literary event with a difference... I

wouldn't be at all surprised if the

Book Swap evening doesn't become the popular

way to mix books, writers and

the reading public." - Robert McCrum, Guardian

Gordon R Brown and Katherine JonesMon 28 June 2010 - Sat 07 August 2010

Gordon is interested in the awkward relationship between us and the naturalworld. This fascination surfaces in his playful paintings depicting scenes of asurreal nature with various otherworldly characters of bird box men, strangeanimals in the forest and the odd appearance of Darwin.

Katherine works with traditional forms of printmaking in conjunctionwith drawing and watercolour. Her work follows today’s sensitivitytowards issues of protection and security using a recurring house shape, subverted structurally and contextually to simultaneously implynurture, protection and suffocation. Her interest in the disparitybetween different versions of ancient stories, where repetition andimperfect reproduction has confused the original message also plays aprimary role in the work’s conception.

Martina Lindqvist and Tim SullivanMon 09 August 2010 - Sat 18 September 2010

Jerwood Photography Prize 2008 Winner Martina Lindqvist's project AThousand Little Suns is influenced by an interest in spatial psychology,

and more precisely the emotive effects of landscapes and forestedwilder land. It takes a contemplative look at the northernlandscapes of Ostrobothnia in central Finland, which during theautumn and winter months should be shrouded by an impenetrabledarkness, but instead finds itself lit by a thousand glowing lights. The lights are neither natural nor intentional, but a by-product of anarmada of industrial sized greenhouses scattered around the area, changing it into something weird and alien—something that seemsimpossible to the rational mind.

Video and PerformanceOn the Micro Gallery screen we show a changing programme of video works, performance art andanimation. Highlights this season include the work of Marianna and Daniel O’Reilly, Roger Perkins,Dan Arnold, Joyce Treasure, Meta Drcar and Dori Deng.

Selected pieceswill be shown in theAuditorium. Checkwebsite formore details on video andperformance.
