Forget about the holy water, cross and garlic - all you need to fight vampire power is a trusty watt meter. The State Library Commis-sion, in cooperation with Xcel Energy, has provided our library with five meters that are available for pa-trons to check out as part of Xcel’s Power Check Energy Meter Program. The porta-ble meters are simple to use and come with a detailed instruction book. Check

out a meter, check out your electricity use, and check out the savings! Vampire power, also called standbypower, phantom load, or leaking electricity refers to the electric power consumed by electronic devices and appliances while they are switched off or in a standby mode. So, your devices may be using up power even when you think they aren’t! If you plug a device into the watt meter with the device switched off you can see how much vampire power it uses. Some such devices offer remote controls and digital clock features to the user, while other devices, such as

power adapters for discon-nected electronic devices, consume power without offering any features. All of the above examples can usually be switched off just by switching off at the plug. However, for some devices with a built-in internal bat-tery, such as phones, the standby functions can be stopped by removing the battery instead. Meters are available at the front desk at the library for a three day checkout. For more information call the library at 686-5603.

Story Stones Storytelling has been around for centuries and has been used in every culture to provide informa-tion, teach life lessons, and to entertain. But did you know that storytelling and narrative skills are also important in helping young children develop pre-reading skills? When children create

stories, they are developing their memories, decision-making skills, and cognitive development, in addition to exercising their imagi-nations! We would like to invite children ages 18 months - 6 years and their parents and caregivers to partici-

pate in Story Stones, where we paint pictures on rocks and use the finished stones to tell endless amounts of stories. Come dressed for a mess and prepared for fun on Friday, September 28 at 10:00 am. See Andrea for more informa-tion: 970-686-5603 or [email protected].
