Welcome to our eleventh annual Gold Bullion Bull Production Sale! We decided to move our Bull Sale 3 weeks earlier this year to Saturday, February 23. It will still be at Kansas Bull Development on the Onaga Road North-east of Wamego, KS. For the second year, we put a brand on the lower right quarter of our bulls of GB. However, we used the old philosophy “The quality goes in before the brand goes on”. This means that we culled some bulls at weaning, some on pedigree, some on performance at Kansas Bull Development, and some on disposition before the brand went on.

The auction format will have the bulls going through the sale ring. The bulls will be available for viewing on Fri-day afternoon on the 22nd in the farthest Northwest lot at KBD, and in group pens adjacent to the sale ring barn on sale day. The gold Bullion group consists of four of the original breeders: Brooks, Dikeman, Drake, and Schaake. The weather has been mild and dry and the bulls gained extremely well, with an ADG of nearly 4.2 lb./day on a high roughage ration over an 85 day test. The targeted ADG on this ration was 3.5 lb./day, so the bulls exceeded our expectation. The bulls were very healthy and they look great. We think this is one of the best sets of bulls we have ever offered for sale. A video of the bulls will be uploaded to our website: www.goldbulliongroup.comWe developed the catalog with the bulls listed in sale order to allow you to more easily keep track of the bulls and their corresponding data during the sale. In appreciation for recommending our sale to friends and neighbors, we are offering a $50 cash discount gift to customers whose new referrals purchase a bull.

All bulls being sold passed a breeding soundness exam, tested negative for PI-BVD, and were vaccinated for Lepto-Vibrio. All SimAngus bulls are non-carriers of Arthrogryposis (Curly Calf Syndrome) and non-carriers of Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (by pedigree or DNA tests). Ultrasound data for carcass traits are included in the catalog as well. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer have been used extensively by the breeders.

We are committed to Performance, Excellence, and Integrity. Strength in our collective numbers of years in breeding quality, performance cattle will bring strength to your numbers. Our group brings combined experiences from the show ring, the classroom, the feed yard, retail sales, and research.

Thank you for your interest in the Gold Bullion Bull sale. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, February 23. Lunch will be complimentary.

AnnouncementsAnnouncements made sale day and/or from the auction block during the sale, take precedence over printed mate-rial. Anyone attending this sale attends at their own risk. Sale staff, hosts, and/or their representatives or employees will not be responsible for any personal injury or damage to any attendee or his/her property.

Health/ManagementAll bulls have received IBR, BVD, P13, BRSV, 7-way blackleg; and at least two rounds of Ivermectin or Decto-max (for internal and external parasites). In addition, the bulls were vaccinated with Spirovac VL5 (new Lepto-Hard-jo + four other strains). All bulls were tested for brucello-sis, and all bulls tested negative for PI/BVD. The fall bulls will have lower growth and carcass numbers as they were produced on grass until July and then brought along slowly.

Bulls/Fertility GuaranteeAll bulls were fertility tested by Dr. Lee Penner, DVM, Manhattan, Kansas, and sell as guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season, through 8-15-13. This guarantee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, illness and/or acts of God (lightning, flood, etc.). In the event a bull is not a breeder, he will be replaced or credit will be given on an-other bull. Note this does not cover death. We strongly recommend death insurance.

Semen InterestEach owner is retaining1/4 semen interest in all bulls unless oth-erwise announced. For most commercial programs, this will not interfere with the natural service use of the bull. It means that the breeder may want to arrange with the buyer to collect semen on a bull. Or, in the case that the bull proves to be a superior sire, and the buyer and/or breeder market semen on a bull, the breeder would share in 1/4 of the profit and get semen at cost.

The Value of PerformanceSimmental and SimAngus bulls can easily add 30-50 lbs. to weaning weights in British based cowherds, and their progeny will perform well in the feed yard and on the rail if you retain ownership until harvest. In addition, females from Simmental and SimAngus sired calves would make great replacements, especially when the females are Simmental x British crosses. Using current calf prices, a bull that sires an average of 25 calves per year for 4 years and adds 30 lbs. average weaning weight per calf at $170/100 lbs. would be worth at least $5,100 more than the price of a bull that adds no additional weight at weaning. You can do the math if they add more weaning weight than 30 lbs. and sell for a higher price than this example.

For producers who keep replacement females and retain own-ership through the feedlot of all steers and heifers not kept for replacements, the ASA All Purpose Index (API) does a great job of identifying potential value differences among bulls. For example, a bull with an API of 130 would be worth $30 more per calf than a sire with an API of 100. Using these two ex-ample API values, if a bull produces 30 calves per year for 4 years, the value difference between these two bulls is $3,600!

Benefits of CrossbreedingCapitalizing on ’heterosis’ by crossbreeding is a very valuable tool in beef cattle production. Probably the most significant and long term study of heterosis was conducted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Nebraska. That study showed that 80 crossbred cows producing crossbred calves are as eco-nomical in life cycle production as 100 straight bred cows rais-ing straight bred calves! This 20% bonus in efficiency starts with the increased fertility of crossbred cows, which is fol-lowed by increased vigor and hardiness of the newborn calves. Crossbred cows producing crossbred calves wean a higher percentage of calf crop and the calves are heavier. This car-ries over to increased performance of the calves in the feedlot. Crossbred calves also usually sell for higher prices. In addi-tion to all of these advantages, longevity of crossbred cows is also increased, which means that more heifers can be sold or finished in a feedlot rather than kept for replacements.

Using Gold Bullion Simmental and SimAngus bulls on Angus based cows or other British breeds to create Simmental cross-bred feeder calves and replacements is a great way to capital-ize on heterosis. SimAngus (Angus or Red Angus) crossbred calves and replacement females are second to none as either feeder calves or replacement females! Research at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shows that Simmental and An-gus breeds rank first or second among Continental and British breeds, respectively, in nearly all traits studied.

Using SimAngus bulls (1/2 or 3/4) on SimAngus females capital-izes on approximately 85% of the heterosis obtained from a three-breed rotational crossbreeding program. This is also a very con-venient system because a producer does not have to have different pastures for different breeds of bulls. This system also stabilizes a herd at approximately 50% Continental x 50% British breeding. In addition, SimAngus bulls have an advantage in longevity.

Ultrasound Measurements ExplainedFat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat.

Ultrasound Measurements ExplainedRibeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher per-cent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inchest/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable.

%Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.5 to 4.0%.

Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultra-sound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for deter-mining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The av-erage range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

EPDs - values above or below breed averageCE Calving Ease - % unassisted births from two-year old heifers.BW Birth Weight - pounds of birth weightWW Weaning Weight - pounds of weaning weight due to growth.YW Yearling Weight - pounds of yearling weight due to growth.MCE Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters.MM Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk.MW Maternal WW - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk and growth.CW Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight.YG Yield Grade - tenths of a yield grade.MB Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMFBF Back Fat or Rib Fat - inches of carcass back fat thickness.REA Ribeye Area - square inches of ribeyeAPI All Purpose Index - $ per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.TI Terminal Index - $ per cow exposed under a term- inal-sire scenario.

I have been buying Gold Bullion Bulls for 9 years. My initial reason for buying was to increase weaning weights. My calves are Sim-Angus and consistently at the top on sale day with buyers calling ahead about my heifers. I not only got more per-formance but also improved disposition. That is really nice when the heifers become cows. The Gold Bullion Bulls retain good condition and I have had no feet or leg problems. I have been very satisfied and plan to continue to buy more bulls. “—Don Krug Reasons to buy Simmental BullsCollectively, our Gold Bullion group has nearly 200 years of experience and success in breeding quality Simmental and SimAn-gus seedstock. We are committed to Performance, Excellence, and Integrity. We develop the bulls on a nutritional regimen that allows them to express their genetic potential for growth performance and ultrasound-measured carcass traits, yet the ration contains a significant proportion of by-products and roughage. We then taper off the ration energy density for more than a month before the sale so that they are ready to turn out in near perfect body condition for breeding. We had numerous positive com-ments at this year’s sale that bulls were in the right condition for breeding.Buyers and spectators have commented on the good disposition of our bulls. We think the way we handle them contributes to that. And, we put considerable selection pressure on dispositions. More than 90% of our bulls are AI Sired or embryo transfers and more than 95% of the dams of the bulls are stacked with numer-ous generations of AI Sires. We were one of the first groups to test all bulls for PI-BVD and we test all SimAngus bulls for genetic defects. We emphasize a balance of pedigree, phenotype, EPDs, and Indexes in our selection procedures.

TESTIM\ONIALS

New Spring 2013 EPD’sYou will notice a difference in the EPD’s expressed in this catalog vs. prior years. The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution for the Red Angus Association of American/American Simmental Association genetic evaluation part-nership. This allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world.

The change to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables below to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.

As with any progress there is change, much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius. For example, the following chart com-pares the average EPDs for Purebred Simmental between the Fall 2012 Genetic Evaluation expressed on the new combined Simmental/Red Angus base and the Spring 2012 Genetic Evaluation expressed on the old Simmental base.

Ownedby:BrooksSimmental - Singletary Z123 is one of the best purebred bulls that I have ever raised. He is structurally correct, moderate framed, lots of muscle, with plenty of eye appeal. He was my high gaining bull with an index of 110. His full brother is Lot 9.

Ownedby:SchaakeFarms - Since day one he has been a favorite, powerful yet smooth. His two year old dam will make your mouth water.

Owned by: Dikeman Simmentals - Especially thick, stout, high growth bull with tremendous volume. Notice his outstanding actual weights and EPDs for WW and YW (top 2%)!! He excels in docility, API and TI. Use on 2nd calf and older cows. His daugthers should make great cows that will stay in the herd for a long time. This bull is a “tank”! Don’t miss him!

Page 8: The Gold Bullion Group - 11th Annual Production Sale

Lot 8 is Owned by: Dikeman Simmentals1Z is a long, smooth shouldered bull that is very good on his feet and legs. He is above average for WW, YW, MWW and ranks in the top 10% for API and TI. He excels in Stayability and has a super disposition. Full brother to Lot 7. NOTE: 1Z tested positive for Leucosis. It is highly unlikely that he can spread Leukosis through breeding cows. But, it could be spread by using needles on cows that were used to vaccinate him. Unless a producer has tested and found their herd to be Leucosis negative, buying a Leucosis positive bull is not a herd health issue.

The Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale ConsignorsThe Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale ConsignorsThe Gold Bullion 24 Karat Female Sale Consignors Brooks Simmentals was started in 1986 when I purchased two black Simmental cows and today that has grown to 70. Cattle and land are owned together with my parents, John and Wilma Brooks. AI has been used from the beginning and ET was started in 1997. Today,

most calves are produced through ET and it has become a major factor in upgrading my program. I have enjoyed showing cattle and have had champions at the Kansas State Fair and

the Kansas Beef Expo, but raising show cattle is not my goal. My objective is to raise cattle that are polled, solid colored, and very functional for use in the commercial market with a

strong emphasis on carcass quality.

We began using Simmental semen in 1971 and our herd has grown from 4 cows to about 55 breeding age females. Our children, Mark and Becca, showed Simmental heifers in state, regional, and national Junior Classics; and both were on the KJSA and National AJSA Boards. Michael served two terms on the ASA Board and led efforts to initiate ASA’s Total Herd Enrollment, the Simmental ID system, and the Performance Advocate program. We primarily work our cattle on foot with the aid of our Border Collie dog, Sugar, so disposition is very important to us. We are both on the faculty at K-State; therefore, our cattle have to be easy to handle with our limited time to manage them. Our primary goal is to produce bulls for commercial cow-calf producers. We emphasize ’convenience traits’, total performance, and maternal traits. Our moderate-sized herd of all AI sired, all polled, all black females are moderate framed and functional in the Flint Hills environment. We balance phenotype, actual performance and EPDs.

Diamond D Simmentals was established in the Flint Hills near Manhattan, Kansas in 1968 By Calvin and Mary Louise Drake. Semen, imported from Canada, was used

on Angus and Polled Hereford cows to enhance the polled gene. Artificial insemination has been used for 33 years. Easy-fleshing, polled, rapid-growing females that calve easily are selected as replacement heifers. EPDs are used in selection and carcass quality is stressed. Only AI sire having sound EPDs and

correct structure are selected. Both red and black cows comprise the herd of about 40 head. This is one of the earliest Simmental herds established in America still in

continuous operation. Calvin is a retired professor of Animal Science at Kansas State University and spent several years in the cattle feeding industry.

Calvin & Mary Louise, “Cochise”, Adryanna & Darren

The Schaake’s have been breeding Simmental cattle since 1974, after an introduction to the breed when Scott showed the Grand Champion steer (Simmental x Hereford) at the county fair. Artificially breeding our black cows to Simmental bulls gave us our start in black-factored Simmental genetics in 1975. In fact, many of our leading cow families trace back to “Chipper N726”, who defined the word “longevity” She remained a productive donor cow to the age of 20 years. Currently our program utilizes artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Selection pressure for calving ease, maternal influence, moderate growth, disposition and a manageable mature size has been stressed for several generations. Attention to structural correctness, fleshing ability and marketing appeal has been a priority since day one.

TESTIM\ONIALSData from Triangle H (Sam Hands, Garden City) All Simmental bulls were black purebreds fromGold Bullion and Rock Creek Ranch. Angus sired calves were out of one of Triangle H Angus herds and bulls were from a highly reputable Angus breeder. Sam Hands stated: “I think the Angus and Simmental comparison has a good message. Yes, the cwt. feeder value is the end result. The differences were on target, I thought, and support EPDs and technology.”

My family homesteaded in this area in 1854 (The Kansas Flint Hills) and each generation has continued to live in the area. Brooks Simmental was started in 1986 with 2 black Simmental cows. I enjoy a small amount of showing and helping my granddaughter (Cassidy) show in 4-H, KJSA and the St Fair. I produce sound functional cattle with a good disposition. I work by myself and can’t have cattle with bad attitudes. I strive for moderate framed and easy calv-ing cattle but not giving up growth. Carcass quality is important as producing commercial bulls is my primary goal. All of this is produced thru AI and an extensive ET program. You will see the cow, Miss Kansas K 11G throughout my pedigrees. She is the # 2 cow in the Simmental breed for the number of claves produced, currently at 195 as of Jan. 2012 and still producing.
