BAD THINGS IN MAKERERE
UNIVERSITY Garbage.
Bad policies e.g. the 60% fees policy
Incomplete and abandoned buildings at the university.
Insecurity
Imbalanced number of halls of residence
Dirty toilets
Unpleasant colleges e.g. MDD
Makerere university commonly referred to as the Ivory Tower by the students is not an exception from other universities that face a number of problems.
In spite of all the good things that the university is known and stands for, it also experiences various problems
6/15/2014 17
GARBAGE Despite the fact that
the university has a number of rubbish pits, it still remains a problem
The rubbish fills up so fast and it remains harboring flies and other insects
Some rubbish pits are located in places that are not desirable for example near the senate building and the guild canteen
This is because many people who go to senate see the garbage and get a wrong picture about the university.
The smell from the garbage is also so strong for the people eating from the guild canteen
Sometimes the garbage is not properly collected to the pit in an organized way.
The university should get enough dustbins such that the rubbish is collected at intervals and dumped into one garbage place

TOILETS AT THE
UNIVERSITY The university has
many buildings that have rest rooms for both ladies and gentlemen.
The buildings include the different faculties and the university
The university also has its main offices at the Main building and Senate building.
All the buildings at the university have rest room; however, a number of these rest rooms are not in a good condition.
Some of the buildings like halls of residence have toilets and urinals that need to be renovated.
The senate building has only one place for students and the place stinks a lot.
6/15/2014 20
The toilets for
example in Nsibirwa
hall are flooded and
the sinks are not
functional.
The water keeps
flowing continuously
since the water pipes
are also broken.

DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS
E.G. DEPARTMENT OF MDD The university has
some buildings that are not representative of the 2nd best university in Africa.
Some of these buildings are completely abandoned and others are in use but still in a poor condition.
One of these is the department of MDD. The buildings are too small and too old, they have taken long without being renovated.
Some of these buildings are also occupied by the support staff of the university
However, one could even think that the buildings are going to collapse.

INSECURITY AT
MAKERERE Makerere University has 3 entry points into the
university. The main gate, the southern gate and the
eastern gate.
The university also has small openings(panya routes)
that allow people to enter and exit the university
The security is not so tight at the university; the east
and southern gates don’t have security personnel.
The eastern gate has some security personnel who are
seasonal.
They check people when there are terror alerts in the
country or target is the university
6/15/2014 25
INSECURITY CONTINUED People are not checked every time they enter the
university premises
Some students and staff have also fallen victims of robbery within the campus
There have been a number of attempted bomb attacks at the university
This poses risk to the lives of students, lecturers and other staff at the university
This should be looked upon by the people responsible with keen interest
6/15/2014 26
UNBALANCED NUMBER OF
HALLS OF RESIDENCE
Makerere university has a number of halls where students reside though its not compulsory for students to sleep there
Every student is allocated a hall to belong to while joining university in first year
There are boys’ halls and girls’ halls. boys’ halls include; Livingstone, Mitchel, Nsibirwa, Nkrumah and Lumumba
The girls’ halls include; Africa, Mary Stuart and Complex
6/15/2014 27
HALLS CONT’D There is a noticeable imbalance in the number of
halls that the university has.
This could seem like there is gender imbalance at the university
The girls’ halls are so congested; for example, 4 to 5 people in one room
Boys on the other hand are free in their halls to sleep like 2 to 3 people in one room
This poses a health risk and strains the available facilities like toilets, bathrooms which could cause diseases to the students
