LECTURE – CAUSES TO GREAT DEPRESSION

• 1. The Stock Market Crash of 1929.• Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929.• Stock Market lost all gains of entire year.

• 2. Bank Failures.• Throughout the 1930’s 9,000 banks

failed.• Bank deposits were uninsured and as

banks failed people simply lost their savings.

• Surviving banks unwilling to create new loans.

• 3. Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board.• After the stock market crash,

individuals from all classes stopped buying items.

• Led to reduction in the number of items made and thus a reduction in workforce.

• People lost their jobs and unable to keep up with paying for items bought with installment plans.

• 4. American Economic Policy with Europe.• Businesses gradually began

to fail. Govt. passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930 to protect American companies.

• Charged high tax for imports leading to less trade between American and foreign countries.

• 5. Drought Conditions.• Not a direct cause of the

G.D. Massive drought occurred in the Mississippi Valley in 1930.

• Many could not pay their taxes or other debts and had to sell their farms for no profit to themselves.

• The area of the drought nicknamed: “The Dust Bowl.”
