Dear Hoffman Family, If I want to settle into a blissful state, completely disconnected from the worries of life, all I have to do is rewind the audiotape in my head about two decades. That’s when our kids were toddlers and their bedrooms were equipped with baby monitors. Baby monitors are those transmitters one places near a crib; the companion receiver walks with a caregiver or parent. I’m sure the technology has advanced tenfold since the early 90’s. These devices now have camera video, two-way digital communication and, for all I know, the ability to change a diaper. In our day, the receiver emitted blobs of static. Thunderstorms intensified the blobs. In between the static, however, my wife and I heard some of the happiest sounds in the world. Our kids made up songs and sang them with abandon. They practiced their 3-year old imaginations on the wallpaper and told stories that no grown-up could possibly interpret. They wove elements of their day together into bizarre tapestries of total happiness. They spoke to the glow stars stuck on the ceiling. I never remember them counting sheep. But eventually they fell asleep. While the kids cooed in their beds, my wife and I enjoyed our first real downtime of the day. We connected on everything we had done or not done, experienced, or missed. I don’t remember the two of us feuding, though there had to be some occasions for that. Let’s hope those spats were quiet. It turns out that arguing parents in another room may actually be heard inside the sleeping brains of infants. The effects are not positive. This is what researchers at the University of Oregon have concluded. In a test of the impact of parental bickering on sleeping children, psychologists have discovered that the stress of fighting adults can disrupt the sleep patterns of toddlers, who are otherwise dreamily off in another world. Worse, this disruption of brain equilibrium can set these same kids up for anxiety and behavioral problems. Just when mom and dad thought they were free to fight, the sleeping kid in the next room is absorbing the stress of it all. Like a baby monitor in reverse, the angry and elevated speech of feuding parents gets transmitted straight into the resting brain of their innocent child. Through the use of non-invasive imaging technology and the study of blood flow inside a toddler’s brain, neuroscientists discovered that little brains are incredibly impressionable. The regions of these kids’ brains that process stress were furious with activity when tempers flared. The colors on the monitor lit up with intensity. Scientists have known for years that marital conflict may impair a child’s mental and intellectual development. Until recently, they had no idea it began as early as a nap in the crib. In my work, I occasionally have to pinch myself to remember all the conflict and stress kids and adults bring through the schoolhouse doors. Behind a neat shirt and blown-dried hair can be a quaking set of nerves. I remember a mother once telling me----an exceptional case, I hope---of her family fighting and arguing all the way to school. “It happens almost every day,” she said. “Then we climb out of the car and try to look respectable, smiling the best we can.” Ouch! Conflict free living can be a challenge at times for all of us. Brain imaging monitors light up when arguing gets intense. But each of us has a role to play. Peaceable living in our family systems (and larger worlds) makes a significantly positive difference in the lives of our children (and among all of us!) Extra special thanks to our Hoffman parent community for your ongoing patience, flexibility, care, love, and support as we partner with you to make these elementary years truly treasured ones! Sincerely, Mark Walther Principal

International Night was a huge success!

What a way to start 2016! Thank you so much Principal Villa, PTA President Mary Frese, Yvonne Wolf, and many others at Henking and Hoffman. A special thank you too to Lori Hooten, our graphic designer for the welcome signs and International Night logo. We had a fantastic cultural room hosting staff. Some Glenbrook High School culture clubs came out to support their culture such as Chinese Club, German Club, Korean Club and Mongolian Club. A special thank you to Lauren Locke for coordinating additional volunteer help from the Glenbrook High School Interact Club. They helped to make this night a success! The most difficult task with our programming has been completing our thank you list. There were just SO MANY who pitched in and made our colorful celebration of heritages possible. For example, for all the moms to make beautiful crafts, many fathers and grandparents were called in to watch younger siblings. Suffice it to say, here are some noteworthy miracle workers: Penny   Alexis  Julie   Barad  Lisa   Brooks  Jina   Cha  Mina   Choe  Anna   Citko  Narine   Grigoryan  Cecilia     Hagist  Lori   Hooten  Young  Hee     Jung  Ms.     Kim  Yahilin   Laseca  Stephanie     Lau  Lauren   Locke  Anna   Mikiciuk  Monica     Park  Kathy   Szoke  Janas   Tranas  Anna   Wisniewski  Yvonne   Wolf  Alicia     Zieba

February 1, 2016 Dear Hoffman Family, Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship … we all want our children to develop these values, but it doesn’t happen by accident. Parents, teachers, coaches, and other role models have to provide a good example and do all they can to see that young people follow it. For the nineteenth year, CHARACTER COUNTS! in Glenview is sponsoring a writing contest for students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. I am asking ALL Hoffman School 5th grade students to participate in this meaningful essay opportunity. All 5th grade students are asked to write an essay on ONE of two topics, while keeping the “pillars of character” in mind: 1. Describe what it means to respect yourself. What role does respect play in

your family and/or community?

2. Describe an incident or event that has inspired you to change how you approach life? What pillars of character were involved?

Please know that this will be communicated as an assignment to your child and not as an optional contest. We want all of our 5th grade students to participate because we value good character at Hoffman School, not because it is a contest. (Essays must be no longer than 350 words.) I will collect all essays on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2016. If you should have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. Thank you very much for help. Sincerely,

Mark Walther Principal

Dear District 34 Families, Parents have a unique opportunity to provide feedback to their school through the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. February 1, 2016 Dear Hoffman Family, On Saturday, March 19, 2016 Hoffman School will be hosting a special Dodgeball for Diabetes event! Our sixth Dodgeball for Diabetes event is an exciting service opportunity and fund-raising effort for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) that teaches students the benefits of making healthy life choices, including getting daily exercise and eating nutritious foods. Diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body’s ability to use food properly. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that is necessary for the body to convert food into energy. In people with diabetes, either the pancreas doesn’t make insulin, the body cannot use the insulin properly, or both. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) – the body’s main energy source – builds up in the blood. Nearly one child in every 400 develops diabetes. Only Hoffman School students are invited to participate in this special event to raise funds to help the ADA accomplish the mission – to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all those affected by the disease. The programs and research supported by the ADA help more than 23 million people living with diabetes today. Interested students are asked to organize themselves into a team of 6 members who will play Dodgeball in a tournament format against other students of the same gender and grade level. Please read the attached registration form carefully, and turn in your team’s application and registration fee of $60.00 before Friday, March 4, 2016. Proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes Association. Checks for registration may be made out to Hoffman School. We are delighted to provide this unique opportunity for our students! If you should have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. Sincerely, Mark Walther Principal

Hoffman Dodgeball for Diabetes Tournament Official Rules

NADA RULES The Hoffman Dodgeball for Diabetes rules are in line with the NADA (National Amateur Dodgeball Association) rules set for on their website http://www.dodgeballusa.com/rules.html. Some changes have been made in order to accommodate different team sizes, as well as some rules have been eliminated (no substitutions or timeouts). ADULT SUPERVISION Each Team must have a minimum of 1 parent/coach that will stay with and supervise the team the entire time the players are at Hoffman School. THE TEAM & TOURNAMENT Teams will be made up of 6 players. Five(5) players will compete on a side. There will be six divisions. DIVISIONS: 3rd Grade Boys, 3rd Grade Girls, 4th Grade Boys, 4th Grade Girls, 5th Grade Boys, 5th Grade Girls. The round robin tournament will determine the seeding for a single elimination bracket tournament. 3rd Grade Division 4th Grade Division 5th Grade Division 7:00-8:00 A.M. check-in 10:00-11:00 A.M. check-in 12:30-1:30 P.M. check-in 8:00-10:30 A.M. tournament 11:00-1:00 P.M. tournament 1:30-3:30 P.M. tournament THE FIELD The playing field is a rectangle, divided into two (2) equal sections by a center-line and attack-lines approximately 3m from, and parallel to the centerline.

MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 50’ x 22’ – Similar to a volleyball court.

THE GAME The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball thrown below the shoulders. 2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground. Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, another player, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc) If a player is hit in the head with a LIVE ball, the player will not be eliminated. The player that threw the ball will also NOT be eliminated and no penalty will be given. BOUNDARIES During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls. They must also return through their end-line. If a player exits the field anywhere other than their end-line, they are eliminated. If a player dodges a ball to the side or jumps backwards off the court while dodging, they are eliminated.

Page 14: THE HOFFMAN HUM - Hoffman Elementary School · If I want to settle into a blissful state, completely disconnected from the worries of life, all I have to do is rewind the audiotape

THE OPENING RUSH Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line before it can be legally thrown. TIMING AND WINNING A GAME The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 90 second time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 90 seconds, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the event that there is an even number of players on the court, a sudden death overtime period will be played. The team that eliminates an opposing player first will be declared the winner. 5-SECOND VIOLATION In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. This also applies to tied teams. More details can be found in the NADA Rule Book Officials All decisions made by the official are final. NO EXCEPTIONS.

NO EXCEPCIONES.
