HOFFMAN SCHOOL

H A L L O W E E N P L A N S Dear Hoffman Family,

As the autumn leaves begin to fall and the air becomes more crisp, we know that the Halloween Holiday will soon

be upon us. At Hoffman School we will be celebrating Halloween on Friday, October 28, 2016. In order to help our students enjoy this holiday in a safe manner, we will be using the following guidelines for our celebration at school. In helping your child choose an appropriate costume, doing a little research on historical or storybook characters and modeling the costumes after this would be an excellent choice. Specifically, children are strongly encouraged to dress as literary characters from a favorite book (Examples: Harry Potter, Charlotte, the spider, from Charlotte’s Web, Viola Swamp, Harriet the Spy, Johnny Appleseed, Willie Wonka, Pippi Longstockings, and other characters with positively redeeming qualities) or patriotic figures (Examples: Uncle Sam, George Washington, Statue of Liberty). Students who come in costume as an appropriate literary or patriotic character, will have their name placed in a lottery drawing where five costume names will be selected to receive gift certificates to purchase books from a local book store. * Carrying weapons or wearing roller blades WILL NOT be allowed. * Costumes with blood, or promoting a violent theme are inappropriate. * Masks of any kind are strongly discouraged unless they relate to an appropriate storybook character, historical figure, or animal. “Scream” masks are inappropriate. * Students will be given time to put on their costumes after lunch. Please do not send your child with makeup on his/her face to school in the morning. * Your child is allowed to go home for lunch on this day. We will need a written permission slip from you. Children leaving for lunch will need to sign-out in their homeroom. We politely request that if your child is going home for lunch on this day he/she goes home ONLY during his/her regular scheduled lunch hour/recess period. Students going home are also politely urged to go with their parents, however, we recognize that some of our parents’ work schedules may interfere with this schedule and you may make arrangements with a friend or neighbor. For your child’s safety, you are requested to let us know of your plans on the attached permission slip. Children going home for lunch will be dismissed through the FRONT DOOR ONLY. Fifth grade students only may choose to be dismissed through the doors by Johns Park. We will begin our annual Halloween parade at 1:15 pm. We will march throughout the school and parents may view the parade in the gymnasium.

If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. During the parade, our room parents will have time to prepare for the classroom celebrations while the students are on parade. Getting into the spirit of this celebration, let’s hope for a Boo-ti-ful day!

Sincerely, Selene Stewart, Principal

Por ejemplo: LITERARIO; Roxie of the Hooligans, Gooney Bird Greene, Tía Lola, Gylfie of the Guardians of G’Hoole, Percy Jackson o CULTURALES/HISTORICAS: Rosa Park, Jorge Washington, César Chavez, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Moon Goddess de Goguryeo y Kazimierzi Pulaski. Los estudiantes que vengan disfrazados apropiadamente de un personaje literario o patriótico van a tener la oportunidad de entrar a una rifa en donde cinco nombres de alumnos serán seleccionados y recibir un certificado de regalo para comprar libros en una librería local.

! Llevando armas o patines NO ES PERMITIDO. !

Sinceramente,

Selene Stewart, Director de la Escuela Hoffman

Hoffman Hum Newsletter Distribution At Hoffman School we continue to make baby steps to improve our environmental

footprint and conserve resources when we can. One way to do this is to reduce the paper copies we make. Production and distribution of the Hoffman Hum electronically is one way to accomplish this goal.

Our school newsletter, the Hoffman HUM, is published bi-weekly. We will email the newsletter to you via an email link to the email address we have on record. You can also read the newsletter online as it will be posted to our school website at www.glenview34.org/ho.

We will, of course, distribute printed copies of our newsletters to those families who cannot access the website and/or request hard copies. To request a hard copy, please call the school office at 847/998-5040.Thank you for your support of our “green” efforts to save paper.

T R A F F I C S A F E T Y Traffic continues to be a strong area of focus at Hoffman, in order to ensure the safety of our students, parents, and staff at ALL times. To help monitor the safety of others and help flow of traffic, please adhere to the following guidelines:

• Please be considerate of our neighbors and do not block driveways in the

neighborhood while picking up your students

• Please do not drop off students prior to 7:35 am for student safety of supervision.

• When dropping your child off before school, please pull your car up to the Main entrance and carefully drop you child off along the curbside.

• When picking your child up at the end of the day, please pull up all the way to curb

leading to the main entrance. Your child is not allowed to walk in the parking lot at any time. Remain polite to other drivers, students, and staff members.

• When exiting the school, only right turns out of the parking lot will be permitted.

• Please be respectful of the Crossing Guards at all times. Students and pedestrians in the

crosswalk have the right of way. • Use of hand-held devices and texting is prohibited in school zones per Illinois law.

• Drive extremely slowly and carefully near school at all times. One careless mistake is all

it takes to severely injure or harm a student, parent, or staff member. • Thank you so very much for your help!

Hoffman Elementary Art 2016-17 Vol 1 October 7, 2016

Everyone can create a MasterpieceArt is much more than making a masterpiece. It involves problem solving, critical thinking skills, practice, exploration and patience.

Third Grade

It was exciting to meet the new third graders. They have many fun projects ahead of them this year utilizing a variety of media. A combination of art history, theory, critique and studio technique will foster their creative energy.

Fourth Grade

I was pleased to see the happy faces of the fourth grade artists as they bounded into the classroom. In fourth grade, we continue to combine art history, theory, critique and studio technique to foster their divergent thinking. Although they will continue to focus on specific learning targets, the artists will notice a little more room for personal creativity as they find their own artistic path.

Fifth Grade

My how the fifth graders have grown through the summer. This year will bring them more creative freedom, independence, and responsibility as they prepare for middle school.

SMART NEWS We put the ART in SMART

Practice

Artists are encouraged to practice their drawing skills at home or during their free time at school. Just like math, reading and sports, you only improve with practice. They earn fun erasers or stickers for their efforts.

Mona Lisa Quiet

The students are working hard on displaying Mona Lisa Quiet behavior in class. Eyes on teacher, mouth closed, hands and body are still.

Technology

We will be using iPads a great deal this year for reference, writing, testing, and creating. Therefore, it is imperative that the students come to class with them charged. They are reminded that they are not only responsible for the care of their device but also the appropriate use of it. If a test is given but they lost the use of their iPad or left it at home, it is their responsibility to make up the test during recess. Much of our learning and communication will be done through Schoology. Log onto your child’s account to see powerpoints, videos, how to draw documents, smArt Newsletters and much more. Finally, the students will be creating a presentation/digital portfolio in Google drive documenting their progress in art. Ask them to share it with you throughout the year.

We need Chobani size yogurt cups.

Occasionally we need items from home that you might normally toss. Keep an eye out for requests as we continue

to teach the students the importance of reusing.

Do you have an eye for

design and display?

We can always use help hanging artwork. Email Mrs. Schober at [email protected]
