Late 43 Yard Field Goal Leads Hilltop Past Antwerp

By: T.J. Hug

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

September 5th-6th-ANTWERP: A stoppage in play and

postponement in mid-game did nothing to shortchange the

intensity of the contest between Antwerp and the visitingHilltop Cadets. A sizable portion of this game was played

on Friday night, as scheduled, but surrounding thunder-storms delayed the completion of the match-up until Sat-

urday afternoon. The Archers drew rst blood as quarterback Josh Poul-

son completed a 67 yard pass to Trenton Copsey for a rst

quarter touchdown. Running back Justice Clark was ableto pound in the two point conversion attempt, giving Ant-

werp an early 8-0 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, however,Mikel Burlew exploded for a 75 yard return and touchdown

for the Cadets. Hilltop quarterback Quinn Smith tried to

even the score with a conversion of his own, but his passfell incomplete. This made the score 8-6 Archer advantage.

Hilltop took the lead in the second period. Tyler Suboskiwas on the receiving end of a 30 yard touchdown strike

from Smith. Again, the two point conversion pass attemptwas missed by Smith. Still the Cadets had taken control

of the game, 12-6.

The third quarter saw the Cadets add three more pointsto their total, thanks to the leg of Justin Ashenfelter. The

kicker nailed a 29 yard eld goal for the score. The Ant-

werp combination of Poulson and Copsey wasn't nishedquite yet, though, as the quarterback and receiver hooked

up for a 15 yard touchdown pass. Jarett Brute made the

rst extra point of the game by either side, and the thirdperiod concluded with a 15-15 tie.

Defense ruled the fourth quarter, as both offensesstruggled to put points on the board. In fact, the rst and

only score of the period came with only 13 seconds left onthe clock. Ashenfelter landed an impressive 43 yard eld

goal to give Hilltop the victory over Antwerp, 18-15. The

game-winning boot of Ashenfelter broke the Hilltop recordof 39 yards, previously held by his older brother, Austin.

In the losing effort, Antwerp actually outgained the Ca-det offense with 355 total yards versus Hilltop's 278. This

advantage came from a huge rushing differential, as theArchers ran for 161 yards as a team, while Hilltop only

managed to rush for 38. The Cadets ruled the skies, how-

ever, passing for 240 yards compared to Antwerp's 194.Hilltop also won the turnover battle, throwing only 1 in-

tereception as opposed to the Archers 2 picks. Antwerp didcontrol the time of possession, holding the ball more than

twice as long as the Cadets.

This game was won predominantly on the arm of Smithwho completed 16 of 33 passes for 240 yards for Hilltop,

adding a touchdown and interception to those numbers.

Smith was also the team's leading rusher, carrying the ball

11 times for 23 yards. Running back David Smith had 7rushes for 13 yards.

The leading receiver for the Cadets was Zack VanDyke,

hauling in 6 receptions for 117 yards. Tyler Suboski made5 catches for 61 yards, and Mikel Burlew looked in 4 pass-

es for 53 yards.Antwerp's Poulson went 9 for 16 passing, with 2 touch-

downs and 2 interceptions. Both of those touchdowns werecaught by receiver Trenton Copsey, who reeled in 5 catches

for 118 yards. Willie Jones had 5 receptions for 54 yards.

Nick Barnhouse led the Antwerp rushing attack with19 attempts and 99 yards. Justice Clark added 11 rushes

for 66 yards.Perhaps the biggest story on the night, rushing wise,

at least, was the -18 yards dealt to Poulson. The Hilltopdefense was able to sack the mobile quarterback 3 times

during the course of the game, also containing his running

ability all throughout. This strategy may very well havemade the biggest impact on the outcome of this game.

Next week, Hilltop will play their home opener againstHolgate. Ideally, this will take place on Friday night at 7:00

P.M. But, as this week has proven, one can never be totally

sure.

PHOTOS BY FORREST R. CHURCH, PUBLISHER WINNING FIELD GOAL ... Cadet Justin Ashenfelter receives a good snap, hold, and great blocking which enabled him to drill a perfect 43 yard eld goal with 13 seconds

left in the game which proved to be the game winner.

WORD FROM THE COACH ... Coach Paul Kyser addresses his young Cadets post

game.

DEFENSE ... Having been blown out in their opening contest at Montpelier, Hill-

top’s defense played tough at AHS, giving up 15 points.

GAME ENDING INTERCEPTION ... Kohl Collins picks off a late Antwerp attempt for

a miracle to run out the clock and to lock the Hilltop triumph.

LOW SCORING AFFAIR ... QB Quinn Smith was pressured throughout the game

but mustered up a late run on a scramble to help set up the winning eld goal.

LOCK & LOAD ... As Jalen Towers holds off one rusher and another closes in,

Quinn Smith looks to unload a pass before getting hit.

Bulldog Rushing Attack Gashes Bomber DefenseBy: T.J. Hug

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

September 5th-6th-EDON: There is

many a cliché that could be used to de-scribe why Edon lost on Saturday.

Losing the turnover battle is alwaysa popular choice. And yes, when a team

turns the ball over six times like the Bomb-ers did against the Edgerton, it is extreme-

ly difcult to win a game. Add to that the

fact that most of said turnovers happenedin the second quarter, when the Bulldogs

exploded for 33 points, and this argumentbecomes even more convincing.

Others might point to the lack of a

ground game for Edon. Indeed, rushing24 times for just 9 yards is pretty rough,

especially when one considers that quar-terback Kaiden Sapp rushed for 17 yards

by himself. Generally, an inability to runthe football will make even the most potent

of offenses anemic.

A simple look at the scoreboard will

convince most people that Edon's effortmust have been lacking. After all, it's hardto look at the scoreboard and honestly be-lieve that the Edgerton might have beenthat much better than the Bombers. It'smuch easier to look at the players from adistance and demand they play with “moreheart.”

But no, none of these things were thedetermining factor in Edon's 20-59 loss tohated rival Edgerton.

The turnovers, while debilitating to besure, weren't enough to keep Edon downby themselves. In fact, most of the turn-overs were committed a good distanceaway from the Bomber end zone, givingtheir defense every opportunity to respondto the sudden change of possession.

Rushing for 9 yards as a team did littleto stop the Edon passing attack. KaidenSapp still threw for 348 yards and a touch-down while completing 23 of 43 passes.

And anyone at the game could tell byhow loud the pads were cracking that

“heart” wasn't lacking on either side of theeld, and certainly not from the Bombers.

The culprit behind Edon being on thewrong side of a 39 point route was noneother than their own rushing defense. TheBomber defense gave up 318 yards and8 touchdowns on 32 attempts. In otherwords, one out of every four times a Bull-

dog rusher touched the ball, Edgertonscored a touchdown. It's not as though the Bulldogs method-

ically wore Edon down. Those 8 touch-down runs made up 207 of their rushing yards, with 6 of them being longer than 20 yards. 56 of Edgerton's leading rusher,Dallas King's 99 yards came on two plays, both of them touchdown runs. His quar-terback, Duane Miller, amassed 74 yardson his 2 touchdown runs, which is 30more yards than he gained from passingthe ball all day.

The point is, outside of those six plays, the Edon defense held Edgerton to a muchmore respectable 121 yards rushing and a

pair of short touchdown runs. With only

80 yards passing on the afternoon for theBulldogs, and 36 of those yards coming

from a meaningless touchdown reception

by receiver Alex Michael, that would havereduce Edgerton's total yardage to just

over 200 yards. But it doesn't work that way, and Mill-

er, King, and running back Logan Danielswere able to break long runs when they got

to the second and third levels of the Bomb-

er defense. Is this due to some schematicissue with Edon's back seven? Could it be

a fundamentals issue? Is a personnel shiftin order? It's tough to say for sure, but it's

clear that some adjustments are likely tobe made, and soon.

Hicksville is coming to visit, and if the

Bombers want to save their season, theycan't let six plays beat them again this

week.

I DON’T THINK SO ... Bomber wide receiver Braden Miller attempts to look the ball in,

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

September 5th-6th-MONTPELIER:

Nothing went right for Montpelier in theirattempt to host Wauseon.

Kicking off Friday night, the game waspostponed to Saturday after only a few

plays due to thunderstorms. Unfortu-

nately for the Locomotives, things only gotworse from there.

Two rst half touchdown passes byIndians quarterback Zac Robinson put

Montpelier in an early hole. Noah Castleand Derek Rupp made the receptions, for

20 and 12 yards respectively. The onlything to go right for the Locos in the peri-

od was when Wauseon kicker Josh Whit-

comb missed the extra point on his team’ssecond touchdown.

Another Robinson touchdown throw, preceded by a 2 yard touchdown run byNate Suntken, put Wauseon up by 26points. Whitcomb missed a second pointafter attempt after the rushing score. Lateinto the third quarter, Nate Suntken ranfor a much longer touchdown, sprinting49 yards for the score. With Whitcomb’skick parting the uprights, the Indianstook a 33 point lead.

The fourth quarter was more of thesame. Robinson threw for another touch-down, this one to Jacob Flory for 72 yards. T.J. Gype ran 69 yards into the end zonefor the last score of the game. Whitcombnailed both extra points, giving Wauseona 47-0 victory over home team Montpelier.

At the conclusion of the game, the boysfrom Wauseon had amassed an impres-sive 519 yards of total offense, while the

Locos only managed to generate 81. TheIndians also dominated the time of pos-session, holding the ball for thirteen min-utes longer than Montpelier.

Zac Robinson led the offensive assaultagainst Montpelier. With deadly accu-racy, the Wauseon quarterback complet-ed 18 of 22 passes for 287 yards and 4touchdowns. Rushing wise, the meaning-less touchdown run by Gype made himthe leading rusher for the Indians. NateSuntken’s 6 rushes for 67 yards and 2touchdowns had a greater impact on thegame, however. But it was Robinson him-self who took on the majority of the rush-ing burden, keeping the ball 16 times for55 yards.

For as rough of a game as this was forthe Locomotives, they played a fairly cleangame. Taking care of the ball for most of

the game, they only fumbled once, though

that did lead to the only turnover of thegame. Montpelier also committed only

a single penalty, which amounted to ve yards.

Despite the lack of mental mistakes,

the Locos just couldn’t nd a rhythm fortheir offense. Quarterback Dylan Snyder

went 4 for 9 passing for 33 yards, alsorunning the ball 7 times for 20 yards.

Bryce Cooley was the most productiverunner for Montpelier on the afternoon,

charging ahead twice for 21 yards.

Montpelier will need to regroup by nextweek, as they will be hosting Liberty Cen-

ter. Wauseon travels to Willard for theirnext contest.

no travel experience or high school playing

experience prior to this season. He is an

exceptional athlete and though I’ve never

seen him play his other sports, basketball

position but did a few things last night to

show me he is getting more comfortable.”

By: T.J. Hug

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

 Trevor Frank Strana-

han was a very well accom-plished gentleman.

He studied business atHarvard and The University

of Pennsylvania. He was

a world class weight-lifter.He completed 102 mara-

thons.Oh, and he played a lit-

tle golf, too. The Toledo native's golf

career spanned from 1936-

54, and comprised of over70 amateur tournament

victories, as well as a pro-fessional victory at the L.A.

Open in 1958 and severalhigh nishes in Major Tour-

naments. He also came in

second at the U.S. Amateurin 1954, losing to some guy

named Arnold Palmer. So it's no wonder the

Toledo Junior Golfer's As-sociation (TJGA) chose

Stranahan as the gure to

which they tied their boy'splayer of the year award.

Since 1973. the TJGA hashonored high school golfer

with the Frank StranahanPlayer of the Year Award,

using a points system

based on a series of tourna-ments played throughout

the Summer. The playerwith the most points at the

conclusion of these tourna-ments takes home the hon-

or of Stranahan's name.

And for the last two years, that player has been

 Trevor Dominique.“Our 2013 and 2014

winner was Trevor Domi-nique from Wauseon, who

dominated the points forthe second consecutive year.” This per the TJGA's

ofcial website.Indeed, in the 2014

tournaments, held from

June 9 to July 28, theWauseon High School Se-nior had 12 top ten nishesout of 14 matches, includ-ing 3 rst place and 4 sec-ond place nishes in a eldof 139 competitors. The In-dian representative scored3,365.85 points, giving hima 140.35 margin of victoryagainst second place nish-er Mitchell Kontak.

Aside from the TJGAPlayer of the Year honor,Dominique is also a two-time First Team All-OhioNorthwest District. He was

also named the Northwest

Ohio Junior Golf Associa-tion Player of the Year in

2012, and has achieved

medalist status at thePaulding Invitational, De-

ance Invitational, North-west Sectionals and Dis-

earned a top ve nish at

the Cleveland Junior Open. It's starting to seem as

though Dominique is quiteaccomplished in his own
